Car Stereo Amplifier Information:

A car audio amplifier acts as the power source to your sound system. Technically, the amplifier modulates power generated from the car battery. An amp specified to your speaker's inputs will fully orchestrate your sound system with low bass beats and high frequency sounds.

Amplifiers can be used with any car stereo, from factory stereos to after-market head units. For after-market stereos you connect the amp through the preamp inputs in the head unit. Factory stereos work well with amps that have speaker level inputs because it allows you to work with your vehicle’s current speaker wiring scheme without requiring any additional connection pieces. In terms of configuration, an amplifier usually requires wiring kits, which are designed to connect the stereo to the amp so as to enable the amplifier to receive a signal. In addition, an amp installation requires speaker wire so that you can connect it to the subwoofers and speakers.

An amplifier acts as the centerpiece to any state of the art sound system. Any audio system that features subwoofers must also have at least one amp to provide enough power for the subwoofers to operate as designed. A head unit can only provide limited power, whereas the superior power of an amp enables your subwoofers and speakers to reach their full potential.

The key determinant for selecting the proper amplifier for a subwoofer(s) is the RMS power ratings of both the amp and sub. The optimal setup matches the amplifier power output to the speakers’ power handling capability.

Generally speaking, an amp is classified as mono, class D mono, or as a multi-channel amplifier, which includes 2-channel, 4-channel, 5-channel, and 6-channel. Mono amplifiers are single-channel amps designed for low-frequency reproduction. Class D mono amps are the most efficient design of amplifiers since they use less current and as a result generate less heat relative to the classic design. 2-channel amps can power two subwoofers or you can combine the channels, or “bridge” the amp, to create a single channel for powering one subwoofer. Similarly, a 4-channel amplifier can power four speakers or you can bridge the channels to 2-channel output for powering two subs.

2-channel and 4-channel amps are also used to power component speaker systems, while 4- 5- and 6-channel amplifiers are used for systems with a combination of full-range speakers and subwoofers. For example, you could use a 4-channel amplifier to power a pair of speakers through two channels and bridge the remaining two for powering a single subwoofer.
