Because your Alpine unit won't charge your iPod unless you have it. Apple was nice enough to change from a 12v charging system down to a lower voltage, thus making previous adapters and plugs useless across the boards with head unit vendors. If you have a newer iPod, 2008+ you will probably require this adapter. Good news is, it's easy to use, and just plugs inline with your old wire to your iPod.
