I was looking for an inexpensive double din GPS unit for my truck. Most GPS units start in the $500 and above range. The cheaper ones are for mostly no-name brands that were a little sketchy. I saw this Eclipse unit and was a little skeptical also. Upon checking reviews, I found out it is made by Fujitsu (bought my first laptop from them).
Installation was pretty straight forward. If you have ever installed a stereo before, it is pretty simple. 8 wires for speakers (2 front, 2 back), ground wire, always on +12 and switched +12. That's about it - there are a few more if you want to hook up illumination control, steering wheel remote, etc, but I did not use those. The only other things you need to plug in are the antenna cable and the GPS antenna. So far this stereo/GPS works great. It even has bluetooth, so my phone is hooked up and I can make/receive calls hands free. GPS is based on the TomTom brand and the GPS unit can be detached from the stereo to use as a stand alone GPS or so it will not be stolen. The stereo will still work without the GPS in place - it even has a small readout that tells you the station you are on! The only extra thing you need to buy is the Eclipse Ipod cable - plugging the ipod into the USB adapter will not work. Plus it allows you to play videos from your ipod on the stereo screen. Great unit for the price - it has features that units that cost 4 times as much have.
