I have had my new VM9324 in my car for a few days now and have the following comments:

1) I have used most every feature on the unit except the iPod interface (I don't own an iPod) or the verbal control, and everything works "as advertised". The stereo is a great value for a HD radio fan -- there aren't any other double-DIN touchscreen units with built-in HD radio in this price range.

2) I don't have an issue with the boot up time. Maybe people have an older version? The sticker on mine says it was manufactured in May 2010. It boots up in 15 seconds, and it will start up in exactly the same place (on a radio station, or on a CD track, or a MP3, or in the middle of a movie) as when it turned off... furthermore, if you're only out of the car for 20 minutes or less -- the unit merely "sleeps" and comes on instantly when you start the car, no waiting for a reboot. If your unit doesn't do this -- maybe it's wired up wrong?

3) I haven't noticed the HD reception issues either. If you leave the receiver in "Auto" mode, the stereo will do its best to switch between the HD and FM signal when it has to.... I have only noticed a slight "echo" a couple times, otherwise it handles HD signal dropouts just fine. The HD radio works as well as the Kenwood in my wife's car, I have no complaints.

4) I have had no lockups or spontaneous reboots. I have a feeling that those who do, are probably suffering from over-heating.. this unit gets hot! Be sure to leave space behind the rear fan.

5) Unlike my cell phone, the VM9324 does not play MPeg4's, WMV/ASF's, or AAC/M4A's. It does like MPEG1, MPEG2, and AVI video files... as well as WAV and MP3 audio. I will have to re-encode some of my vids and music.

6) I do concur that the user interface is problematic. There is no practical way to switch between radio stations while you are driving... the only buttons big enough to touch accurately are the Next and Prev station, you can't jump to preset 15 from preset 1 without a lot of hassle.. you'll have to get used to hitting "Next" 14 times to get from preset 1 to preset 15; the MP3 playlist handling is truly "WTF"?; most of the fonts are too small for just a quick glance (like the clock -- why is the Time page so darn small?).

Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone looking for a double-DIN touchscreen with built-in HD radio.... I consider it a good value. However, if you don't care about HD radio, you'd probably be happier with a different brand..

Ok, so its probably not a bad bang for your buck but after having this radio in my car for a couple of months I would have preferred to get something else.
• As most folks already mentioned, it takes forever to boot up with time varying from 30-60 seconds.
• Screen washes out in any sort of sunlight rendering display unusable
• Its also inconsistent with what the initial screen will show. For example; if I was listening to my SD card when I turned the radio off sometimes I get SD as my source and sometime it reverts to main screen where a source need to be selected again.
• The touch screen buttons are too small to comfortably selecting things like songs or preset stations and no, I do not have big fingers.
• The radio has a tendency to freeze with Bluetooth use.
• At times when I get an incoming call there will be no sound coming in until I re-pair the unit with the phone.
• The volume level is not retained when the radio is switched on and off. It always reset to whatever default setting for the source is.
• Whenever the backup camera is used as a viewing source, the volume is muted. I can understand muting volume when the car is in reverse to allow total concentration but why mute it when you are driving forward and want to use it as a rear view mirror?
• iPod interface is lacking. Just like volume settings already mentioned, most features, like song shuffle or playlist placement in the queue reverts to default when the unit is power off and back on. Sound quality is junk unless you use their iPod cable, which I feel is a scam.
If you can live with these shortcomings, then the radio is ok. The bottom line is, I guest you get what you pay for.

January 7, 2011 Good Unit Overall

Just a few notes, I am not using the voice control, satellite radio, navigation, or backup cam functions so I can't comment on those.

Pros:
- HD Radio works as advertised
- Basic iPod functionality works without the additional Jensen cable, just plug your iPod into the front USB port using the Apple cable
- Touchscreen is decently responsive, the interface is generally well thought out (first radio I can change the time on without having to get out the instruction manual)
- Good selection of outputs and inputs
- Low price

Cons:
- Takes ~20 seconds to boot up every time you turn the car on, so don't expect to be listening to the radio as soon as you start the car
- Display is difficult to read in bright sunlight
- No album art on iPod
- Takes a few seconds to skip tracks when using the iPod

July 18, 2012 Worked great for a while

I've had this stereo for seven months and it worked great up until now. The sound goes in and out almost constantly. It will be playing fine, then start to skip, and then will stop completely, only playing bass. It does this no matter what I'm using, be it radio, iPod, iPhone, or SD card. I gave it three stars instead of one, because if you get this head unit, and it works fine then it's definitely worth the money.

Put it in and works fine. I did a code thing which I foun on the net which meant that you could turn off the DVD no play when handbrake is on thing which is great!! Also fitted the reverse camera and auto connected it to the reverse lights. It works too.
Never installed a radio before, so I am very happy with how easy this was to do and how it has turned out. iPod interplay is pretty dumb, so wouldn't buy it if iPhone capability is the top of your list.

February 26, 2012 Good for the price

Just installed this unit today. I like the modular approach to the rear wiring. Not using the internal amp? Don't connect the wiring harness. Not using the backup camera? Don't connect the wiring harness. Takes about 15 seconds to start up - no big deal to me. DVD playback is pretty good, and the screen has a nice refresh rate. Controls are easy enough.

USB playback is GREAT - MP3s, AVIs, MPG, MPEG, it does a lot of formats and I'm very pleased with that. Browsing is difficult between folders, and is rather annoying. HD Radio works ok, but reception is rather weak - I recommend an antenna amplifier - which I had. Haven't figured out presets yet... seems more difficult than it should be.

Settings for the unit are pretty basic for the functionality it has... disappointingly general in nature. Overall though, for the price, and name brand I'm pretty satisfied with this unit.

I knew buying cheap would result in a cheap unit and that's exactly what i got. The remote has never worked. The unit will not turn on every time i turn the key on. The touch screen is not very sensitive and it is impossible to see when there is in daylight. And the radio jumps in and out of HD (that may be the signal where i live). I got what I paid for.

I have always purchased Jensen products and I have always been very satisfied. The VM9324 works great! It has a few glitches every once and a while, but overall everything has been working fine. The only thing that was a little annoying was trying to get the Jensen cord to play video.

May 12, 2011 Not *BAD*, but not without problems.

Usability
Well, I spent a little over a month with the unit, and mostly enjoyed it, but I did have a number of qualms.
The startup time is atrocious. It's between 30 to 60 seconds before the unit boots and starts playing anything, be it radio, CD, MP3, etc. While this is forgivable to an extent, it really does detract from the unit overall.
...it started locking up often enough that I started carrying a bent paperclip with me just to reset the unit. There was one day where I had to do this six or seven times (which was the day before I submitted the RMA).
If you have a convertible or wear polarized sunglasses, do not purchase this unit. You will *NEVER* be able to read the screen with the top down or glasses on. This isn't so much an issue with the unit itself, so much as the type of LCD used. I don't detract much from it for that, honestly -- I wasn't expecting perfect readability in near-direct sunlight.

The good? It's an attractive design that really does feel like a quality item. It switches between inputs fairly quickly, and has decent sound quality for what it is. ...though, I was passing it through a rather anemic factory amp, so I'm sure it actually sounds much better than it did for me. I could never get it to properly play a video file without skipping or going utterly batpoo insane. One half hour episode of an original Doctor Who in XVID caused the thing to freak out and have to be reset three times before it would play through the file; each time was a different spot, so it was not an encoding issue. Ah well. Maybe it has something against British Sci-Fi?

Bottom line: Would I recommend this to someone? Honestly, no. For a hundred or so more, you can get a much more capable head without all of the nicks for being a pain. Like I said, it's not *BAD*, but it is slightly less than average. If I was given one for free, it'd go straight back in the car -- but as I did pay some decent cash for it, I returned it.

Usability
I've had this for a couple days and it's got a couple bugs. If they can be worked out I think it'll be a good radio.
Pros: The display is very nice and works well day or night. It has an entire settings menu (brightness, contrast, hue etc.) that I haven't even had to play with. It also has size zoom And aspect ratio settings for movie watching. Audio quality is pretty good. All functions that I tried seemed to work good, while they were working. Setup was easy once I got the navigation figured out.

Cons: 2 things, really. I plugged in a thumb drive and could read the jpg's OK. The mp3's were all pulled out of their folders which isn't so bad, but I could get it to lock up for a while where it wouldn't let me change songs. Pulling the drive out or turning the unit off and on would unlock it.
This next thing is a bigger problem. When the unit is off for a while (like a couple hours or less) and then turned on, I can't get any sound from the radio section. Everything else plays fine. I have to turn the unit off & on several times (or use the reset button) for the sound to return. I'm hoping there's a firmware update for this. I'm 99.9% sure this is a software issue because everything else works all the time and this works fine once it's working. Since Jensen doesn't list their firmware updates it'll take a while to get this sorted out.

Ive been with my Jensen for only 1 week, but it works great, I just hope is as good as Pioneer, because its got far better looks, I do think Jensen, really put into it everything it had on this unit, and I do think is built to last. Its Heavy has a fan on back to cool off crystal clear reception. excellent so far.

Overall it's not a bad product, it actually made my speakers sound better, and the equalizer is pretty decent to, but like others have stated it takes quite a bit of time to boot, and if you are listening to the HD radio, and your HD isn't coming in clear it makes this rather annoying stuttering and echoing sound. The unit comes with a rotary volume control which is pretty much a must, because having an all touch no knob is a pain in the butt. The design is very nice, and the screen is crisp, bright, and responsive. I would recommend this product, because you can't get any better price for a DDIN head unit with already integrated HD radio.

I installed this myself, 2008 Nissan Frontier, in about 3 hours with the GPS system. Overall it was very easy to install and I had no major issues. The deck will use the factory brackets that are attached to the factory radio, which was nice. You will not need to use the adapter kit, just the wiring harness and antenna adapters. The GPS system has been used several times now and have had no problems, it finds it way everytime. The HD radio is awesome and comes in crystal clear. I have used every option this thing comes with but the bluetooth and have had no issues ever. The only nit pick I would have would be that the screen is a little hard to see with direct sunlight, but I believe you would have this with any screen. Overall I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it to anyone.

I love this radio, it has amazing features however voice recognition is not accurate. It works when it wants to and I guess the only complaint I have is that the start up is kind of slow. Other than that it has amazing sound and features plus the screen is amazing I could actually see the screen during day time unlike older Jensen units.

This radio is worthless. I installed it and the cd player worked for a day then broke. Anything i hooked up through the usb port in the front sounded like dog poop! The touch screen was garbage didn't work, oh yeah and the remote didn't work... could have been the battery but i didn't own it long enough to bother gettig a new battery. On the bright side Sonic Electronix did deliver it quick and didn't give me a hard time returning it. I will do bussiness with them again. Just going to buy a better name than Jensen.
