General Features

Color Type
This will denote whether the displayed image is color or black & white.
Night Vision
Some cameras are equipped with additional lighting for improved performance in low light conditions. LED lights will drastically improve range visibility and maintain a color image. Infrared LED lights have an even further visible range but lack a color image; this is a true night vision feature.
Sensor Type
Currently, cameras will typically use a CMOS, CCD or CMD sensor type. A CMOS camera is your most common type due to its low cost and quality performance. CMOS cameras also use much less power than a CCD but are more susceptible to noise interference. A CCD camera is much more sensitive than a CMOS camera so the pictures are cleaner and less grainy and perform much better in low light situations. A CMD camera is right in between the two as it has a better image quality over CMOS cameras and a comparable picture quality to the CCD cameras without being quite as expensive.
Resolution (pixels)
A display's pixel resolution defines its ability to resolve fine details. Digital TVs and projectors measure screen resolution in pixels. The higher the resolution, the more detailed the picture will be.
512 x 582
Video Output
This is how the video signal is outputted to the receiver. Most items use RCA composite cables, while other units use wireless transmitters or other video cables.
RCA Composite Cable
Mounting Type
This is the manner in which the unit is attached to the vehicle.
Top of License Plate Frame
Adjustable Tilt
This means that the item can be tilted and adjusted to achieve the perfect view for the user.
Weatherproof items are protected from the elements. They usually are treated or coated with special materials that help protect them. Normally, weatherproof units are sealed to keep any water from getting inside.
Reverse Image
Mirror Image is feature which horizontally flips the camera's image before it is output to a display. This is necessary when the camera is being used as a backup camera so that the orientation of viewed image is the same as if the driver is looking in a rear view mirror. Cameras without this feature are to be used to view images in front of the driver.
Parking Guidelines
Parking guidelines is a feature which displays guidelines over the image from the camera to assist the driver with parking. The guidelines help to determine distance between the camera and an obstruction.
Built-in Microphone
Some cameras have built-in microphones in order to provide an audio feedback of the environment outside, or to record audio when using the camera for security purposes.
Primary Color
This is the main color of the item.
Frame Material
This is the material that the license plate frame is made of.
Camera Housing Material
This is the material that the housing of the camera is made out of.
Minimum Illuminance
Essentially the amount, or intensity of, the visible light required for a clear picture. A lower Lux rating designates a camera that will function better with less light.
0.5 lx
Lens Distortion Correction
Lens distortion correction is a feature which allows for the viewing of faraway objects and an uninterrupted horizontal (left to right) path without the need for a fish-eye view.
Screen Size
This is the size of the monitor on the unit. It is measured diagonally and in inches. The bigger the number the larger the screen.

Better than I thought for Price

May 1, 2015

I was looking for a good quality budget CCD camera. I have to say I'm impressed, it's a lot better quality than I thought it was going to be. Picks up light great in the dark and is always clear. I've had it installed for about a month now and it's been pretty reliable, has made backing my truck into tight places a bit easier.

The only bad things I can say about it is
1) no markers in camera display for lining up like other cameras have (its really not that big of a deal though).
2) This is my biggest problem with it, and was a pain in the butt. This camera uses a proprietary connection to mate each end of their cable together. Which is all fine and dandy if you happen to know the exact location in your car a +12v wire is that is activated by your car being in reverse. Most cameras you literally splice into one of you reverse lights at the rear of the vehicle to power the camera. Not this camera. I mean you could, but you would have to run not only the camera proprietary cable to the front of the car, but another wire to provide power from reverse lights. I had to find a wire inside of the cab of my truck from the fuse panel that was also +12v while in reverse. This made the install A LOT longer than needed to be. So if you are purchasing this camera thinking you're going to just splice into your reverse lights, think again.

I love this product!

November 4, 2008

I just purchased and hooked up the Boyo Vision VTL400 on a toyota SUV yesterday. First of all, this is my first backup camera, so I may be a bit impartial here, but I have to say, I love this thing! I hook up to 3 trailers on a regular basis and was tired of jumping out of the truck constantly to see if I am at the ball. I hooked up a Kenwood DDX712 that I am using for the monitor and mounted the camera above the license plate. Last night I hooked up to my boat (in total darkness) and drove the ball to the hitch in 2 seconds. I could see exactly where the ball was and was perfectly lined up with the boat. The only complaint I have about all of these cameras is the angle is fixed, once you tighten down the screws. They should make these camera's with an in-car angle adjuster, so when your done hooking up the ball, you can move it up, to see higher up. Although we went out to dinner, paralled parked on a busy street. After dinner, someone parked within 12 inches of my back bumper. I turned on the camera and backed (with my ball on) an inch from the guys bumber to pull out, without a sweat! Worked great even in the dark! I have not hooked up the switch on the kenwood so it automatically comes on in reverse yet, but plan to do so. I just wonder, with tons of car washes over the years, will it still work? $99.00 will find out!

I have this camera installed on another of my vehicles; it has given good service
James W on Apr 13, 2015
I have a Boyo Rear View camera system, # VTC461R, on my car, and it appears that the camera is bad. Will this camera replace it? It looks exactly like it. I understand that the system I have includs the VTL 400 RF as part of the kit. Some say they are kits and not individually compatible and not interchangable with each other.
