Headphone Design

Headphone Type

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

In-Ear
Headband Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Earbuds
Specifically For
Some headphones can use an IR Transmitter in your vehicle, while some can be plugged into your media device and be used on the go or at home.
Home/Portable

This is the application that the headphones are designed for. Each application has unique features that make it perfect for particular uses.

Home/Office: These headphones are designed to produce rich, brilliant sounds that the artists would appreciate.

Sports: Designed for active use. These headphones are made to stay in (or on) the ear during workouts.

Kids: Feature noise limiting technology so that your little ones don't damage their ears listening to music too loud.

On-the-Go: On-the-go headphones are lightweight and often fold up for easy storage and portability.

Student: Compact and rugged enough to survive life in a backpack; inexpensive enough to not hurt the wallet of a student.

Studio: Reproduce music perfectly without any coloration. Look here for reference quality studio monitoring headphones.

Traveler/Airplane: These headphones are compact, lightweight, and have a portable design.

Acoustic Principle

The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types:

Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source.

Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room.

Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

Audio Features

Driver Type

The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Balanced Armature:
A balanced armature driver uses a coil wrapped around an armature which is held in between two magnets until it is stimulated by an electrical current. When stimulated, this armature is magnetized which causes it to rotate one way or the other around a pivot point which moves the diaphragm to create sound. Balanced armature driver headphones are generally earbuds and can have multiple drivers in each earbud.

Dynamic:
Dynamic drivers are the most common driver type. They feature a permanent magnet, usually neodymium, a voice coil and a conical diaphragm to drive your music. A dynamic headphone driver looks pretty much identical to any typical home theater speaker.

Electrostatic:
Electrostatic drivers are made up of an extremely thin membrane, usually a coated PET film, stretched between two metal plates. An electrical signal is applied to the metal plates to create an electrical field which, depending on its polarity, draws the speaker diaphragm toward one of the plates which forces air through the perforations in the diaphragm which generates the sound wave.

Planar Magnetic:
A planar magnetic driver is made up of a large membrane suspended between two sets of oppositely aligned magnets. An electric charge is applied to the membrane to induce movement and produce sound waves.

Dynamic
Audiophile

No
Built-in Amplifier

Can't beat it for the price

November 11, 2015

I picked this up for an inexpensive set of Bluetooth headphones and it works way better than I dared to hope (figured it would probably fall into that 'you get what you pay for' category, but for the price it seemed worth it). What sold me on trying it out was that I could use it with all of my corded headphones, not just the earbuds that it comes with. The earbuds are also way better than I was expecting. I figured they would be the equivalent of the near worthless headphones you get when you pick up a new phone, but theyre well worth the price on their own.

The Bluetooth works as well as any other Bluetooth headphones I've tried. I havent stretched the range on it too much yet (the farthest I've wandered from my phone is probably ~20 feet with a wall in between), but I haven't had any trouble with the signal cutting out or anything. Battery life on it is pretty solid, I haven't run it down completely with the earbuds yet, but it lasts about 4 hours with my audio technica's. I've only had it for a few days so I cant really speak to the durability, but it seems sturdy enough as long as you take reasonably good care of it.

One word " surprised "

December 1, 2016

When I ordered the first one all I thought that for this little amount of money the worst that can happen is the trash can! While at the same time my late father words where running in the back of my mind bothering me, telling me " you try to save you'll end up paying extra. ".
Imagine my Surprise that after getting this little Bluetooth gadget I ordered a few more because they are just great and actually worked and worked better then much more expensive products that do the same job which I got at one of the biggest online shop for much more money!
My plan was to make a quick buck selling them but I had a problem, everyone I knew wanted one after I gave one to my niece at her birthday, so now this gadget became gifts for people who think that I'm giving them something that I had to pay at list 10 times more then I actually did and as long as they think so why ruin their illusions.

Convenient but Humdrum sound

October 17, 2016

For convenience, you can't beat it. The buds that come with it were OK, so I plugged a pair of Polk ultra fits into it and gave that a try. It worked fine but the sound quality was considerably less dynamic than plugging directly into the iPhone itself (bluetooth compression notwithstanding). There was very little punch to the sound and the Polks generally deliver quite a thump for inner ears. But I will use when I'm running... much less hassle than dealing with a flopping wire mile after mile. And for the price, it's really a "why not". Well, when they are on sale anyway. Just don't expect to get high end sound out of it.

Life N Soul Bluetooth earbuds

July 27, 2016

This is a great product that exceeded my expectations. They are easy to connect to your device and the battery lasts for multiple hours of play fully charged. The Bluetooth device itself is a bit awkward because sometimes you may not be wearing anything to clip it to but overall a good value. I use it in my car so my phone can stay in my holster or just be unattached when listening to music. No more tethered phone or tablet in the car!

Power output of this is pretty good. It has enough to power my beats earbuds. I like leaving my phone in my pocket and not having the wire dangling in front of me. This solved that problem.

I was looking for a of Bluetooth headset to work out with. I couldn't find a set that would fit comfortably ( I have a big head). When I saw this set at such s low price I was sceptical of sound quality and functionality. When received them they were easy to pare great sound quality and they are easy to use when making phone calls . I definitely recommend them. At the price u can loose. I plan on ordering a couple more, just to have extras on hand I also think they would make great gifts.

Not to shabby!

November 27, 2015

I was looking for a way to make my wired earbuds wireless while in the workshop. I saw a review saying it could accommodate earbuds besides what it come with and it does it surprisingly well. It gets loud enough and sound is clear, It doesn't have mic but that's OK for such an inexpensive item.
