Important Note: Polk Audio specifies the nominal impedance of these speakers to be 2.7 ohms. The product manual is correct in stating the nominal impedance of the MM series of speakers to be 2.7 ohms.

Speaker Specifications

Series
This is the manufacturer product line of speakers.
MM / Mobile Monitor (Polk)
Priced Per
Car Speakers are typically sold in pairs so you will receive 2 speakers for each speaker purchase on speakers marked "Priced Per Pair". If a speaker is marked "Priced Per Each" then the speaker is sold individually and each purchase you make will result in 1 speaker. High-powered tweeters, midrange and full-range pro audio for car speakers are typically sold per each speaker.
Pair
Speaker Size
Refers to the size of the speaker measured in inches. Every vehicle has standard application sizes. Please use our vehicle fitment guide for your vehicle's specific speaker sizes if you do not know them.
5-1/4"
Design
The number of individual drivers in a car speaker. Speakers with 2 drivers are known as a 2-way, and 3 drivers are known as a 3-way. Component systems are often referred to as "separates" because the tweeter is not attached to the midwoofer (main speaker driver) and mounts separately in a location such as a door post. Component systems typically come with an external crossover so you can easily adjust the high and low frequencies sent to both the midwoofer and the tweeter. Center channel speakers are great for those looking to have surround sound in their vehicle.
2-way
Tweeter Design
Designs such as cone, dome, semi-dome, balanced dome, and whizzer are most popular. Cone tweeters are simple, efficient and typically are the most reasonably priced. Dome tweeters are used in most home speakers, and provide a smoother and more accurate sound. Semi-dome design is one with a dome placed inside a cone. A Balanced dome driver is a semi-dome with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the driver. A whizzer tweeter is a separate tweeter cone driven by the voice coil of the woofer.
Dome
Tweeter Composition
Materials such as polypropylene, silk, cloth, and paper are the most common, where as many more recent tweeters are now manufactured with composites such as Aluminum, Titanium, Mylar, and other materials.

PEI is an acronym for "Polyetherimide" which is an amorphous, amber transparent, high-performance thermoplastic.

Silk-Polymer Composite
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Woven Glass Fiber
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Butyl Rubber
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
200 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
90 watts
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
92 dB
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
50 - 25000 Hz
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
2.7
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
2-1/2"
Cutout Dimensions
Refers to the dimensions of the hole, measured in inches or millimeters, required to contain the speaker.
4-11/16 x 4-11/16
Hi-Res Audio Compatible
This feature refers to if the product is capable of Hi-Res Audio (HRA) playback.
Speaker Grilles
A grating or screen of metal or plastic bars or wires, mounted in front of a speaker as protection. If yes, the speakers will include matching speaker grilles. If no, there are no grilles included.
Yes
Number of Speakers
This is the number of speaker that is included in the package. Each purchase will result in receiving the number of speakers indicated here. Please note that some items will have multiple woofers in the same enclosure. For sets of component speakers, this number will refer to the number of sets of speakers (For example, 2 would indicate the purchase includes 2 woofers and 2 tweeters).

Please refer to the product image and description for further details about the speaker.

Great sounding speaker

April 21, 2009

Overall this speaker has a nice warm sound that gets better and better. I have only had these for a week and they get better bass extension, although it isnt completely needed because I have a sub. I purchased these the 6.5 components, and the 6x9 polks as well they sound great together. I have a 12 inch kicker L7 solobaric and these speakers keep up the bass doesnt over power them.

Pros Great customer service and quick shipping clean sound, with crisp not overall bright highs perfect sounding.

Cons: none really they sound great

November 17, 2010

I put these in my 2006 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic running the stock radio w/o an amp. They are a huge improvement over stock, and have amazing clarity and bass. They do get louder with use. I had to ziptie the crossovers to the fairing supports, which was no problem. I had to remove the little speaker covers, but the speakers look cool. I've washed the bike and they've been wet several times with no issues. I may try a small amp with them for more sound and clarity at speed! Highly recommend!

August 9, 2010

I have these speakers in the fairing on my motorcycle. I have not heard better sounding 5-1/4" or smaller speakers. They play loud and clear, with great highs, and surprisingly good bass. They far surpass the stock speakers. Plus, they are waterproof.

Great sound and lightweight!

January 21, 2012

I purchased two pairs of these speakers and the sound is phenomenal. I bought them for a 2 seat roadster with a very loud cabin and they have done very well on only head unit power. As a plus, they're very lightweight but sturdy. I'd highly recommend them.

Natural clarity

November 19, 2014

I bought a pair of MM521's to go with a pair of MM921's & MM461's. Two months after installation & breaking them in. I have to say the sound is impeccable! All of the speakers work seamlessly in my '92 DeVille. The imaging is great, & music is natural. If there isn't much bass in the material, you won't hear it. If there is, these will bring it. As an ensemble, I can't see how these can be beat! I can only imagine the sound when I install the sub-woofer & amp.

April 1, 2016

Top notch sound and even some decent bass from these speakers. Best 5.25" speakers I've ever heard. I have them with Alpine SPR-69's and a Boss PV 3700 amp (which is an amazing amp for the money by the way) and the sound is so loud and crisp and clear. The sound of this system is way louder than I can take and remains perfectly clear. I've had a lot of car stereo's and I learn a little more from each one. This combo of speakers and amp are by far the best I've ever had, and didn't cost a fortune either. Loving my driving! Thanks SonicElectronix, I couldn't have afforded a system like this without you.

are these compatible with 4ohm speakers (rf 282 8in.)or any other 4ohm speakers?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2014
Best Answer: Hello,

Unfortunately , you may be asking the wrong question. The impedance of Speaker (x) will have absolutely no bearing on its compatibility with Speaker (y) . Instead, your concern must be whether the Amplifier that you wish to hook up Speakers (x) & (y) to will accept this kind of setup. Often being the case, it will NOT. If THIS is your concern, contact the manufacture of your amp for details.

A shopper on Nov 7, 2014
Best Answer: good quality 16 or 14 ga. cable is good. at short distances, should be ok. haven't tried 12 ga. but watch your gain settings and volume if over 100 rms per channel.

I'm running a Pioneer de-80 PRS and want to run in network mode. I'm currently running 4 Polk MM521's in my jeep + a sub and I'm wondering if I can ditch the polk passive crossovers and run two separate NVX MVPA4 4ch amps amping the mid woofer and the tweeters on these 2-ways separately? I really don't have room to easily install the component MM5251. This would allow me to control all crossover points for Mid, Hi, and Sub directly through my head unit. Little help would be appreciated.

Best Answer: Yes it can be done active this way. You'll have to run 3 amps if your going this route. One for highs, another for mids and one for the sub stage. A couple RCA splitters and you're in business. You have many options with this deck, its up to your imagination and problem solving abilities. This HU can actively run 4 networks if you power the front tweeters off the deck. You don't really need the rear tweets. Just move the front ones from the mid and put them up on the dash. It will clean up the sound and you wont have to drive them as hard. Hope this is helpful.

WHatis the difference in 2.7 an 4.0 ohm ???I
A shopper on Oct 31, 2014
Best Answer: Hello,

There are a few ways to answer this, so please do a bit of homework if this doesn't answer your interpretation. The difference in impedance simply suggests the impedance of the given speakers, which will then relate to how much power it is able to take from your amp. In theory, the higher impedance is 'better', but the margin of difference is SO SLIM that getting into that is a waste of time. Generally speaking, neither is "better" than the other; Like subwoofers, it comes down to which configuration works best for Your project.

Best Answer: The MM stands for Mobile Monitor, Polk's upper line of car speakers. As for the "extra boxes," they are outboard crossovers, their function is to send the midrange to the mid and the high frequencies to the tweeter. Hope this helps, they sound great in the fairing of my Victory Cross Country.

what is the best mini amp to use with the polk audio mm521 speakers?

Best Answer: I would imagine there are too many variables involved to answer that question. I mounted my MM 521 in a motorcycle fairing and used one of Rockford Fosgates Amps designed for motorcycles and have been very pleased with it. I think it'll depend on your application.

I was looking at your Q&A on youtube and was wondering if you could do one with a baseline on how to set the eq on a stereo? I know all stereos, cars, woofers, etc are different but thought it would be very helpful to a lot of people to have an idea of what to do. I purchased this Sony MEX-GS600BT, a set of polk UM 5.25, a 10" kicker 2 ohm woofer and a soundstream Picasso p4.500 amp recently and have been trying to get it to sound the best I can. I have the 5.25 running at 2 ohms on 2 channels and the sub at 4 ohms on the other 2 channels. Thanks, Bradley

Best Answer: Hello Bradley,

When it comes down to it, equalizers are far too relative to make a proprietary video on. We plan on making an attempt, but even then it may not do you any good because your ears and our are Not alike, and therefore the outcome will very well be moot. Which brings me to the main point, there is no "right way" to set an EQ. If YOU feel there is Low End missing, then you bring up the Low End Frequencies. If you Feel there is TOO much Mid Range, then you bring that down. We can tell you how WE would tune the EQ to OUR preference, but in the end it may very well sound like "trash" to Your ears. So, play with the settings until it fits Your preference. There is no such thing as getting a system to "sound the best" it can, because it is all relative.
