Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The total peak power output is measured as the wattage per channel multiplied by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.

I bought this and have it hooked up to 2 rockford stage 2 punches, it pushes them very well and i am very happy i took the gamble of buying this amp. I have bought other unbrand name amplifiers and was let down, this amp does very well tho, i recommend it to anyone whether your on a budget or not.

I had this same amp on 2 15' American Bass DX's and it worked amazing outstanding sound and power best price anywhere is rt here, only bad is that there is no reset it went into protect mode and wouldn't come out sent it in got a new one and worked flawlessly.

I have 2 of this SPL GRLA 2200 and so far so so good. I have a Honda Accord 94 and I have 3amps- the front speakers are power by the SPL GRLA 2200 and the back speakers are power by another SPL GRLA 22000. No over heat last all day no problem.

This amp bounces!

I have the loudest setup at my high school, no comparison. I am an audiophile and me and my friends have messed around with tons of different amp and sub setups, and this amp is by far my favorite. I can't even believe the price on it. The sub volume control remote knob is awesome under my dash. This amp provides so much power! I have never heard my 2 12" kenwood subs even slightly distort, even when my head units volume is at its max. I have another 4 channel SPL Gorilla 1200 amp powering my polk 6.5" components and it provides a perfectly balanced, clear sound. my music has never sounded better and I give most of the credit to my SPL amps. I even have friends asking to go for rides in my car and when they leave they complain that music can't sound better anywhere else.

I use this amp to run a Boss P126DVC in a DVC setup. It does it's job very neatly and I can absolutely recommend this product. It's not competition power, but it handles my needs very well.

Great amp, over heating issues.

This amp pushes my two Kicker 12 inch 4 ohm CVR's really hard, so hard that i have been asked if i have two L7's no joke. This amp will over heat in my case because my kickers draw the full power of the amp when at full volume. The amp will over heat after about 45 min of full on volume if not ventilated properly. Other wise its a great amp and i would suggest it for any two subs under 800 watts rms (combined). I would also advise two things as well, don't go cheap on the amp kit because this amp melted two of my fuse holders because what i thought was 4 gauge really was 8. The second thing would be get a capacitor if you plan on pushing this amp, my lights dim so bad at night it forces me to turn the bass down. My 2 farad cap has corrected that though. Other wise this is a great amp for some subs. I would recommend it.

Order was made 03-25 and shipped the same day!! I just received it on the 04-05, pretty fast for a international delivery near Montréal, Québec ! The amp. was in a other box with stuffing and no label on it. It was left by UPS at my front door (it is a pretty safe place).
They amp look good, all was in it with at SPL gorilla sticker in bonus.
Did plug it yet but that is for my second review, They only thing, there's a small difference in the picture, on SonicElectronix.com it has 3X30A fuses, but for real it's 3X25A. It's the GRLA1600/4 that have 3X30A but not available. There is still the GRA3000/1D that have 2X40A fuses.
Can't wait to install it!!

I have this running one 12" grla12 at 4 ohm bridge, it provides well over 900 watts easy and works flawlessly. Great amp with plenty of power for the sub. Had this hooked up to my spl components and really had to turn the gains down almost all the way, just too much for the comps. I went with a smaller spl amp for my comps and am very happy with their products.

Great So Far...

Very Clean sounding amp. With the Cooling fins they pack a lot into a small frame. The length is around 13" not 17". I run a 12" DVC free air subwoofer with a 80oz magnet and this amp is about 8" away from the magnet. Originally it was putting out about 50w, but started producing full power about an hour later. Not sure if it was the magnetic field of the subwoofer bothering the amp, low battery, or a factory break in period but it's working awesome now. I'm also running a 4 channel 840 SPL amp powering 6 Lanzar mids and tweets which is very clean also.

I bought this amp on the reviews of others on this site and others, and after seeing mostly positive reviews, I made the purchase for myself. It fits the description perfectly and works like a champ. Its pushing 2 MTX jackhammers and do they ever pound. With this amp sending 370W to these 400W RMS subs, they bump and loud. This amp has been running for hours and works perfecty even after 6 months of heavy use !

To say this as kindly as possible this product is junk. It overheated constantly and if I turned it up too much it would turn off. I took a sledge hammar to it. It did look cool though.

So far this amp is great. I would have given it a straight five stars across the board, but didn't feel I was honestly able to. I gave one less on the durability because I haven't had it very long. And because of some rough casting marks on the heat sinks, I couldn't give it a full five there either. However, for what it is. It does what I want.

I have a yukon with 2 Sony Xplod's 12's in an obcon freak box with this amp and it booms. I use to have a 1200 xplod amp before and the difference is huge, this amp hits with much cleaner bass. Very pleased with this amp and the price is great. It has a nice look and is not big, fits right under my back seat nicely. Gonna try a few more products from SPL now.
