Headphone Design

Headphone Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Earbuds
Earpiece Design

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

In-Ear
Specifically For
Some headphones can use an IR Transmitter in your vehicle, while some can be plugged into your media device and be used on the go or at home.
Home/Portable
Acoustic Principle
The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types: Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source. Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room. Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

General Features

Noise-Canceling
Noise Reduction technology removes unwanted noise from a signal. Background or ambient noise can be removed to produce clearer speech and enhanced hearing. Typically these Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones are powered and use batteries to activate the noise canceling technology. Also referred to as Noise Reduction or Noise Cancellation.
No
Headphone Connection
This is how the headphones connect to the audio source.

Corded means that the headphones use a cord to transfer the audio signal.

Wireless means that the audio signal is transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

Corded
1/4" Stereo Jack Adapter
Some headphones will come with a 1/4" stereo jack adapter to connect the usual 3.5mm jack to a 1/4" stereo plug.

1/4" Stereo jack is a larger audio jack that select electronics have.

No
Volume Adjustment
Volume Adjustment means that the headphone (independent of the source) can adjust the playback volume. Many headphones and ear buds have in-line volume control, which allows adjusting the audible volume from a switch on the headphones cord. Other headphones have a volume knob on the headphone can.
No
Built-In Microphone
This means that the headphones or earbuds have a built-in microphone. This can be a microphone on the cord, built into the headphone, or even a boom microphone. These mics can be used for music devices like iPods, for Smartphones to make and receive calls, or for gaming purposes.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
10 - 18,000 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
105 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
Driver Type
The physical design of the driver in the headphones.
Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.

Great sound but horrible build

June 28, 2011

The sound you get from these earbuds is great, but the build of them is absolutely horrible. The cover to the wire that leads in to the earbud comes loose after a couple of days which leaves the wires exposed. You can glue the cover back on but you have to be careful not to get glue on the wires. It seems all of them have the same problem because I have had two, both of which lost the cap on the earbud. Rockford has to fix that problem it's really annoying. Rockford makes such great earbuds but they always fall apart.

Awesome

February 18, 2011

These headphones are awesome. I've been using cheap apple earbuds for over a year now and they kept breaking. I figured I would put out the extra cash and go for a pair of "real" earbuds. The Punch Plugs are by far the cleanest sounding earbuds I've ever heard. I hear things in songs that I've never heard before on a pair of $100 headphones I use for my computer. The bass in these are amazing. I personally am a huge basshead, so I have my bass turned almost full on these. If you have an iPod touch 3rd generation or newer, I recommend getting the app "EQu". It only costs a couple bucks and it is a life saver. It's a replacement for your normal music app, and includes a graphic equalizer and a realtime display for a music spectrum. When you get these, listen to them for a few minutes to get used to the sound of them. Then, play either a playlist of different types of music, or some pink noise overnight. Once broken in, the bass gets much deeper, and the highs become much more clean.

The best head phones I own!!!!

December 15, 2010

I have some Bose over the ear head phones and some Kicker over the head phones and not to mention all the other cheap ones. BUY these!!! Let me explain why. These ear buds have so much bass its not even funny, it freaks all my friends out. But they are still crystal clear. I have Everything on my ZUNE and it all sounds amazing with these. The 100 or more dollar Bose over the ear with a way bigger driver dont sound nothing like these, And the the kickers are better than the Bose but still not close to these. Bose is more mellow i guess and kickers a little harsher and these are just right. (((NOTE))) These ear buds need a long break in period dont just put them in and say these suck cause thats what i did, wait a week or a few days and let them break in and then they will sound AMAZING!!!!! also if you use the wrong ear piece and they dont seal in your ear there will be no sound pressure and they will have NO base and will sound like crap, make sure there in your ear tight so it can seal and create the sound pressure. Thats whats makes the bass in these ear buds. They also cancel out noise very well because of the seal they make in your ear canal, I carry these with me every were i go and Im having to buy another pair because my sister pretty much stole mine when she heard them. Buy these you'll be glade you did.

These R Awesome!

September 29, 2010

These ear buds are awesome! They sound and look a thousand times better than my older ear buds. I used to have some $40 Sony ear buds and they were better than the standard iPod ones of course. I like these first because they are stylish and the black casing matches my iPod. The blaring white headphones that iPods come with are way too visible for my taste. Ok well anyway, lets get to sound quality. These things have punch and bass! They stay true to the Fosgate name and I love listening to them with all kinds of music. The mids and highs arnt bad either, better than my Sony headphones by far. I did not use all the eartips I was content with the stock eartips so I have nothing to say on those really. The cable is unique, it is flat which I like way better than rounded cables. The flat cable is great because I run it under my shirt at the gym and it is more comfortable than the circular cables. They cancel out the noise well because of the angel I can really get them snug in my ear. This is great at the gym when I want to concentrate on my workout and not the clanging of weights from all the other people. LA Fitness is often crowded :P Overall I am very happy with the price and the purchase from Sonic Electronix! These ear buds are awesome and so far my friends are impressed as well!

Boomin Rockford Fostgate PUNCH PLUGS

September 16, 2010

I would recommend these earbuds to anyone who listens to rap, hip/hop, dance or jazz music. The bass is unexplainable. There is 1 catch.....These earbuds need a 12hr burn in period. Yes 12 hrs! Take them and plug them into your MP3 player and put on 3/4 volume and set it on some hip hop continuous play (unless you have 12hrs of different rap tunes!) and walk away and let the magic happen! Come back or wake up, whichever you choose and pick them up and start to enjoy sounds like never before!

Rockford Fosgate Punch plugs

September 5, 2010

the concept was nice but they fit horribly and kept falling out. I tried all the tips provided but they still fell out of my ears even when barley moving around. I go to the gym a lot and couldn't even where them because they kept falling out. the sound quality was okay. The bass was descent not really that hard of bass. These headphones are just loud not "Bassy" like they mention.
