Sophisticated crossover functions

Each of the MS-A5001’s outputs can be low-pass, high-pass or band-pass (low and high) filtered. You can choose among 97 different crossover points between 20Hz and 20kHz, and select crossover slope rates of 6dB, 12dB and 24dB per octave. For further flexibility, crossover settings are completely independent for each output.

DSP technology

The MS-A5001 uses digital signal processing (DSP) for all input-mixer, crossover and output-level controls. Compared with analog crossover circuitry, DSP circuits produce extremely precise results with a minimum of audible artifacts.

Connects to any analog signal

The MS-A5001 features RCA-to-bare-wire adapters to connect to all line-level and speaker-level inputs, and includes a selector switch for matching the amp’s input to the type of signal that it receives.

JBL MS-A5001

Digital input mixer

The MS-A5001’s digital input mixer simplifies configuration by allowing any input signal to be routed to either speaker output.

Power Specifications - Subwoofer Channel

RMS Power @ 4 ohms
The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far. If the final impedance of your speaker(s) or subwoofer(s) equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound. The 5th channel on these particular amplifiers are usually dedicated for driving subwoofers.
500 watts x 1 channels
RMS Power @ 2 ohms
The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far. If the final impedance of your speaker(s) or subwoofer(s) equals 2 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound. The 5th channel on these particular amplifiers are usually dedicated for driving subwoofers.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
MSA (JBL)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
1 - Mono
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

500 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
Most 4 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
Not Bridgeable
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
1%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
1 pair
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
High-pass (HP)
High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

20 - 140 Hz
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

20 - 140 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
80 dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
40A x 2
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.
No
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Sonic Certified Amplifier
Sonic Certified amplifiers have been tested by the experts at Sonic Electronix to meet or exceed the wattage ratings provided by the manufacturer. If this is marked as Yes, then you can trust the wattage ratings. If marked as No, then we have tested the amplifier and it did not meet the advertised wattage ratings. If marked as Not Tested, then the Sonic Electronix experts have not yet been able to test the amp.

Serious power, I love the amp for the value

January 14, 2015

I paired this with two 10" GTO JBL 528 subs wired in parallel, 4 ohm, and it hits so freaking hard, my jeep bounces! Seriously, this is a great amp for the cost. I also own JL Audio and can't tell the difference.

This Amp is beautifully designed, easy to use and set up! I have it running one 10" JL W1 in a small sealed enclosure in my 2014 4runner. Power is clean and plenty of it. I highly recommend it for its design, flexibility, and clean power!

great little amp

February 17, 2015

The shipping was fast and packaged appropriately. The only minor inssue I ran into during installation was the remote input. The input had a 1.5 hex instead of 2.5, so the supplied Allen wrench wouldn't fit. I would suggest reading the book a couple of times b4 setup. I have it pushing a Fi Audio X10 in a 1.3 ported enclosure tuned at 33hz. It sounds better than when I had the kicker zx750.1 pushing it. I'll have to update this review once I have it for awhile to give opinion on durability.

truly amazing

June 11, 2015

I've owned many amps by orion hcca jl audio memphis audio kicker and even a JBL gt series back in the 90's. First I am impressed with how compact this amp is. The digital read out and being able to perfectly dial the hz in and signal is something I've never seen before and truly comes threw when dialing in your preferred sound. I have it hooked up at 4ohms to 2 12 gto single 4ohm subs in vented box. I can not believe the sound 250w per sub this amp produces. Just incredible. This is by far one of the amps I've ever owned. Top notch two thumbs up I can't imagine it getting any louder and only have it hooked up with a factory radio. But when I get a aftermarket head unit and run it at 2 ohm it will probably be the best overall system I ever owned JBl out did themselves here. For a amp this impressive under 200 you'll be a fool to even look at anything else. Hats off Harmon. Thanks sonic electronix for such a great deal.

Nice Amplifier!

September 11, 2014

I am using this for a pair of Pioneer TS-W260S4 subwoofers and a Kenwood Excelon 998 in a 2003 F-150.

This was a huge improvement over the OEM installation, and I am really enjoying the punch that these deliver!

The installation and setup of the amplifier went well enough without any major issues.

Simply Awesome

July 13, 2011

When I saw this amp and read up on it I had to have it. It's a lot of bang for the buck. Setup is scary simple. The digital circuitry and class D design is clean and second to none. I have this paired with a JBL P1224 in a ported box and it is much louder than I expected. Very nice.

I wanted some decent bass...

July 20, 2015

I got some pretty awesome bass and a ton more power than I was expecting. Have had 0 issues, and have maxxed this thing out for 2-3 hour drives. It never stutters, it always hits hard, and remains clear. Definitely glad I went with this. If you're considering a 500 watt amp, this is it for the money.

Works great with my two JBL 1214's

May 30, 2015

I put this amplifier in my Camaro Powering two twelve inch subs. It has more than enough power to fill the car, but don't expect to be able to hear your music two blocks away. It is easy to set up and has a very useful suite of features. Overall excellent quality and good price. It doesn't look flashy, but I don't need it to. Would definitely recommend for use with JBL's 1400 watt subs

Versatile!

April 5, 2015

Separate input/ouput level adjustments, digital crossover (no guessing!), subsonic filter with variable frequency & slope, defeatable crossover (on hpf & lpf), variable slope on lpf (same as hpf), automatic turn-on, underrated power, wireless bass remote... What's not to like?? Perhaps the only things I could find is not being 1 ohm stable for those that need it & some had issues with the wireless bass remote staying connected, but other than that this is probably the most versatile mono amp on the market and especially at this discounted price level. These will be missed when they're completely gone from the market.

Powerful Amp for its size. It is really simple to use and has great features! Where was this 10 years ago? The reproduction is great, sound quality and did I mention the features! You can't go wrong with this amp for its price, power and features. It's not a SPL monster but a middle of the road every day type amp. As with any JBL product...its loud and clear!

I LOVE IT!!

March 29, 2015

I purchased this amplifier to power two RF P3 10inch, dual 2 ohm subs. It does an excellent job at this but I love it soooo much, I'm getting one more and upgrading to two 12inch T1 dual 4 ohm subs. This amp is extremely easy to set up considering the amount technology packed into it. There are almost all usable crossover frequencies available, lo pass and hi pass. Good job Harmon Kardon on an excellent product!!! I've used it for two weeks now so my 5 star durability is a bit subjective...

What a deal!!

July 21, 2015

I was considering purchasing this amp for the full $399.99 retail price several months ago. I waited and SonicElectronix had it for (cheaper) so I jumped on it immediately and I'm glad I did. This is a compact amp that will fit just about anywhere you would want to install it. It features some great tuning features and a lot of power. If anything the power is underrated on this unit rather than overstated like so many amps on the market today. The high-level input adapters are appreciated since I installed it off the rear speakers. The remote turn-on feature is nice because I don't have a dedicated remote turn-on line from my factory radio.

I did have an issue with a loose connection internally in the amp. I sent it back to SonicElectronix and am awaiting the replacement.

UNIQUE FLASHY AND NICE BUT..........

July 20, 2015

its nice to have endless options, real world power over manufacturer, nice looks, small, stays cold, but ive had a few and emailed harmon they are know for memory issues digital setting don't always stay. also the soft start on it doesn't work well. still has a pop other amps don't in my car. also in high level it takes an eternity to turn on after radios on. sound is decent thanks to options. basically i think there are better amps if you can deal without the nice flashy looks. my kicker cx600.1 sounds 1000 time better turns on instantly has no pops and put out same power.

Awesome amp, HUGE BANG for the buck !!

July 17, 2015

This was the first JBL amp I have ever bought. After a few months of "thinking" about it and reading several reviews, I decided to take the plunge. I am NOT in ANY way disappointed. Both the power of the amp, and sound quality (if you tune it the way they recommend) are both impressive. Installation was easy, tuning was easy to do, although I felt the step by step instructions were mildly vague in a couple of areas, taken a moment to look things over they were easy enough to figure out. I do intend to buy at least one more of these and a 5 channel JBL amp for my Suburban. (once I convince my wife that is...lol) I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this amp...no doubts at all. Also, Sonic, as always, shipped fast and free....Thanks guys!

December 27, 2014

Purchased this amp for the features. Upon arrival, it did not work. I hooked up my Kicker and completely forgot about it. Sonic has a great warranty, so I sent it back- even after the warranty had expired. They gave me another even, so I hooked it up and mounted it on the box, as my box has an amp rack. I blew the screen. It still works great but I can't change anything on the amp as I cant see what I am doing without the digital display. Shame on me for that one!

Was the right size, right specs for my needs. What really made me buy this amp was that it was sonic electronix certified to output- and it shined!

Best Answer: Hello,

Your answer is in the specs. =]

Two Rockford Fosgate P3D2/D4-12 will be asking for 1200w RMS. The MS-A5001 is only able to produce ~500~750w RMS @ 2ohms. So, although the MS-A5001 is a Fantastic amplifier, it is only able to put out enough power to drive One sub at its full potential. The best match for two drivers will be the Rockford Fosgate R1200 or NVX JAD120.1; of which, will need the Dual-4ohm version wired down to a 1ohm load. If you wish to go with the JBL amp, you will need Two amps and the Dual-4ohm drivers wired to 2ohms respectively.

Does this include remote control for bass and volume?
Mnnmat on Feb 11, 2015
Best Answer: Hi,

The MS-A5001 does NOT ship with a Remote. However, the JBL MS-WBC is the compatible remote for it. Unfortunately, we no longer carry, it is discontinued, and we aren't sure where you will be able to find one. However, we suggest taking the model number and doing a quick search. In the even you do not find one, we suggest going with a Universal Remote Level Control, which may very well be the best/practical option anyway. We us the NVX XBRC in our Install Bay when faced with such a scenario.

This amp does not turn off after the vehicle is off. All settings lost when the ignition is turned on. Please help.?
A shopper on May 4, 2015
Best Answer: Check your wiring. Use a multimeter to verify your positive reads 12v always, and that your remote only reads 12v when the car is on, or the key is turned to acc. If everything reads correct, then I would suspect that you may have a bad amp. However, it sounds like a wiring problem.

Would the amp pre out put a full range signal to daisy chain a two channel amp for component speakers?
A shopper on Jul 4, 2015
Best Answer: No cause the rca cables coming from the deck only hold a subwoofer signal. You'll have to run separate rca for hpf (high pitch frequency). Same with any and all amps.

Does this amp have enough power to push two 10'' gto1014d subs?

Best Answer: This amp will not work for those subs. Since they are dual voice coil, you need to find a sub that is 1ohm stable, and preferably bridge capable. Wiring the voice coils in parallel with each other in each sub brings each sub to 2ohms, then wiring the two subs in parallel it's the amp makes a stable 1ohm system. This is the best possible way to get these subs to hit hard and tight like a kick drum or an 808 bass drop. Don't put too much power into them though. I put 750watts through mine and they blew. Obviously. Keep it at 450-500watts at 1ohm. Hope this helped.

What's the best way to wire these subs? 4 ohm to 2 ohm or keep it at 4 ohm?
Logan H on Jun 25, 2015
Best Answer: It depends on the sub and the Amp you are using....If the Amp is stable at 2 ohms then you could wire it and see if it thumps...Otherwise, keep it at 4 ohms...
Read the manual on your Amp.....Always wire per manufacturer's recommendation!

I'm looking to power the polk db1222 dual 12" 2ohm enclosure. Would this be a good amp?
Ruben G on May 20, 2015
Best Answer: I think you would be pleased with the amp performance, I'm pushing 2 10" JL's in a Stealth Box in my Camaro at 4 ohms, and don't have it tuned to its full power. The digital interface is really nice, and makes adjustment a snap. Hope this helps.

Does this mean that it has a built-in line out converter?
Ryan D on Dec 22, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, There is a pair of RCA output from this amp and you could connect another mono amp from that output. So, for example, all you'll need is a pair of RCA from your head unit sub woofer output into one amp, then another RCA from that amp output RCA into the other amp input RCA. Hope that help and make sense.

Best Answer: Just depends on how you wire your subs. Dual voice coil subs particularly these can be dropped to 2 ohms. Pay attention to impedance matching.

Yes, but it will have the ability to overpower the X1200T , so its important that the amplifier be tuned in properly, preferably by a professional .

is the jbl 5001 mono block power hungry or very efficient i want to put it in my 2011 dodge charger i currently have a ssl 1500 mono block it hits ok but not the way i want i no the power rating is low on this amp?
A shopper on May 8, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

Compare to any SSL amplifier, literally Any, the JBL MS series is Very efficient. Coincidentally, it likely makes better power , being CEA Compliant, than that amplifier as well. Even if the latter isn't true, you will be able to keep your power for a longer period of time, which, in of itself, makes the MS a better option.

Audiopipe APMI-1500
Audiopipe APMI-1500
Best Answer: Hello,

The amplifiers are fairly power hungry, but not comically inefficient by any means. It really depends at what impedance you wish to run the setup at, but if we assume the lowest possible load, providing ~1400w, then you may require some upgrade in components. A proper battery will absolutely help, but you won't know until the amplifier is in the vehicle. A capacitor is not intended to help your vehicle, so if that is your main concern, don't bother with the cap.

Also, 4 Gauge is not intended for a "3,000 watt amp". Even very high strand OFC wiring in a VERY short length is only able to properly handle Half that. So please plan accordingly. Coincidentally, assuming OFC, 4 gauge is perfect for the APMI-1500.
