Sennheiser Audio Store

Audiophile, Premium, Best In-Class, Sennheiser

Sennheiser is a name that is synonymous with audiophile products. They have been viewed as a premium, top-tier (dare we say "The" top-tier?) brand since the beginning of time. Laboratorium Wennebostel's time that is. In 1945, Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser founded Laboratorium Wennebostel's, or "Lab W" in a pleasant half-timbered house. Fritz Sennheiser was born with a gift. When he was 11 years old, he saw an early radio that inspired him to build a crystal radio. Again, he was 11 years old. There was no turning back from that day. The following year after founding "Lab W", Sennheiser produced his microphone. From that point on, it was one success story after the other. Sennheiser's technology continued to improve, and "The Bar" continued to rise. In the mid 60's, Sennheiser released the HD 414, the world's first "Open Headphones". That very day changed the future of headphones forever. That very same headphone, the HD 414, not only helped establish Sennheiser as a leading headphone manufacturer, but it sold over 10 million units. It is the best selling headphone of all time, and Sennheiser had just gotten started.

With the HD 650 by Sennheiser, users do not merely passively hear music; they actively experience it. The HD 650 will captivate your senses and offers total immersion into a sea of music; letting you completely disregard your surroundings and be taken away into your imagination. Life truly is too short not to treat yourself to the phenomenal listening experience of the HD 650.

Headphone Design

Headphone Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Over the Head
Earpiece Design

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

Great Headphones

May 18, 2014

I'm not an audiophile and I haven't owned many headphones, so I can't really be technical about this. All I know is the HD 650 sounds very good with the built-in amp in my sound card. It is comfortable to wear in long periods and the build quality is pretty good.

Great audiophile headphone at a reasonable price

May 18, 2014

I bought the HD 650 while on promotion at Sonic Electronix. Though I expected this to be a quality product, it was still very impressive when I first opened the box. The headphone is well designed and looks high-end. Compared to my Grado SR 60i and Audio-Technica ATH-M50, the HD 650 has much richer and more precise sound. It is more comfortable to wear than the 60i and comparable to the M50. At 103 dB, it is a highly efficient headphone. I can hear a lot of details in the music than with the other two headphones. With 300 ohms, it means low distortion but also means it is better to be driven by a dedicated headphone amplifier. I am now using a CEntrance DACport to drive it. The sound is acceptable, though I suspect it would sound more louder and better if I had a more powerful amplifier. But for now, I am satisfied with the performance. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. For new users who don't have a dedicated amplifier, make sure you maximize the volume bar on the music player on your computer; otherwise you might think the HD 650 is too hard to drive. I did not realize this problem when I used the HD 650 for the first night, my heart sunk when the sound from the headphone was so low. Previously, it was not much an issue with my M50 as that one is much easier to drive and it is loud enough even the player on my computer is set at the medium volumes. Not the case for the HD 650. I am also pleased with the purchase experience with Sonic Electronix.

Pretty Amazing

May 22, 2013

Things I like: Snug fit but comfortable Sexy looking headphones (like me, lol) well balanced, crisp clear sound and open sound makes echos from instruments sound amazing. good for jazz, oldies, and vocals (sounds amazing on Hide & Seek by Imogen Heap) They don't sound bad but not my favorite when I was listening to hip hop, dubstep or other music with heavy bass. They don't have that impact you would expect when listening to those types of music. I prefer my Beyerdynamic DT990s for that. With that being said I would choose the HD650 for every other type of music. I really went back and forth between the two but really couldn't choose one over the other so I just went ahead and got these as well. That may seem like a lot of money but when you listen to music all day it's definitely worth the investment. It's nice to treat yourself well every now and then.

HD 650

May 22, 2013

I was very pleased with the Sennheiser hd650 headphones. They are very spacious and present. These cans have some serious output impedance and need to be used with an amplifier to get their full potential. Over all I would say these are an incredible value.
