The W7AE embodies JL Audio's commitment to pushing the envelope of speaker technology. This Tenth Anniversary edition of JL Audio’s ultimate performance subwoofer features multiple patented technologies inherited from the previous W7 driver, but are distinguished by a few cosmetic differences to set it apart - most notably the Satin-Black Powdercoated Basket and Bright Anodized Surround Clamp Ring. Moreover, an OverRoll™ Surround, W-Cone technology and a Floating-Cone attach method are just a few of the JL Audio exclusive assets that set the W7AE above any other "high end" subwoofer driver currently on the market. These drivers have set the bar for drivers wanting to provide the deep transparent lows of a Sound Quality woofer and the hard hitting power of an SPL sub. The W7AE is able to provide its sublime sound quality and extreme output by efficiently dissipating thermal buildup and optimizing its staggering linear excursion.
Although the 10W7AE-3 Subwoofer can be driven with as little as 300 Watts, for best audio performance it is recommended to run an amplifier capable of between 500 - 750 Watts of continuous power per driver, like the JL Audio HD750/1 or JL Audio XD600/1v2. In addition, these subwoofers are optimized to operate in either a ported or sealed enclosures, needing 1.25 cubic feet of air space in a sealed box and 1.5 cubic feet in a ported/vented enclosure. (Specific dimensions and figures can be found in the user manual, linked further below.)
Every W7AE subwoofer is built to exacting quality standards in JL Audio's Miramar, Florida factory. Each of the four models is a completely original design from surround to back-plate (even the bolts and screws used in assembly have been purpose-designed and manufactured to our specifications). Its this attention to detail that delivers the JL Audio quality and performance we have all become accustomed to.
By utilizing space wasted in conventional speakers, JL Audio's ground-breaking OverRoll™ Surround controls the W7's massive excursion without sacrificing precious cone area. In addition, the W-Cone™ assembly delivers astonishing cone stiffness with minimal mass. The shape also provides incredible torsional rigidity, which is critical to maintaining voice coil alignment at the suspension limits. Combined, these two technologies allow for the driver to achieve extraordinary linear excursion (Xmax), therefore providing that rich JL Audio bass.
DMA is JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system and is aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W7AE motors remain linear in motor force over an extreme range of excursion and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass. Its main catalyst is the driver's Ultra-long Voice Coil, that allows extreme linear excursion, phenomenal power handling and control, control, control

I owned a Alpine SWX 1243D powered by a Rockford Fosgate T1000-1BDCP. I wanted to use less space in my 2011 Pilot so I purchased the JL Audio 10w7ae-3. I optioned for a sealed box that was designed for the JL Audio 10w7ae-3 so my box was slightly smaller than the ported box I was using. I purchased a JL Audio HD750/1 to push it. My new ten inch sub was as heavy as my 12 inch sub but overall I occupy less space and the power amp is much lighter. Suffice to say I saved a little space but this JL Audio setup is phenomenal. My older setup shook my truck more but the bass produced by my JL is lower, smoother and deeper than my Alpine. I am very happy with my JL sub/amp combination. It costs a bit but it is worth it. Besides I am giving my older setup to my son. Who knows one day when my money is right I might get him a 12w7ae-3. I know he would love it. I am very happy and excited.

Great subwoofer, this thing rocks my car. Keep in mind tho that you need a custom box to fit this sub as my universal 10" box did not fit it.

I have two of these in a dual ported enclosure made to JL specs. Powered each of them with an XD600/1. I can not tell you how many times I have turned heads. Could only place the gain at slightly less than half way.
There is also nothing like a JL amp. If you are planning on getting these and running something cheap, you will not get the same SQ.
By FAR the best, loudest and clearest subs I have ever owned.
CONS: Running two of these in an enclosure is pushing 100lbs but well worth it, nevertheless.

The price point is still a bit absurd, I understand how they get there, but it's still absurd.
Now that the obvious statement is out of the way, we can move to audio bliss. If the price is the only thing holding you back, buy a blown one and rebuild it. The sub is infinitely rebuildable, essentially.
I am a lifelong audiophile that boycotted (buying new) JL for decades based only on price. We used to pride ourselves on cleaning the floor at stereo comps with people who would pay $3k for JL subs and amp, then get DESTROYED by us with some skill and $500 bucks!!! However, I have always respected and appreciated their sound and sound quality. I won't say it's unmatched, that's not true, but it is to be respected.
The older I got the less time I have to play and am looking for efficient sound quality, and the W7 fulfills this in the most amazing way possible. We have a single 10" W7 in our family vehicle (21' CX-5) powered by an 800.1 Audiocontrol amp with Accu-bass and it just works well! HD Pre-fab box tuned to roughly 38hz for now, gains set with my O-scope as always and I am about %50 through full sound deadening of the vehicle. I run JL's in a few of our vehicles (W3, W6, W7).
PERSPECTIVE:
The ONE 10"W7 properly setup, will "outdo" my 3 12" W3s from in a sealed enclosure. I say "properly set up" because you can pull much more out of the sub than I am, but I would rather have longevity at zero clipping than I would 5 more DB. I have been through every side of the audio world and at almost every level, and there is no replacement for quality equipment. BUT it's also important to remember that usually it's not about "bad equipment", usually it's about "bad application".
-Remember to never run those RCA's cables down the same path as your power wire folks!
BUMP ON!
-Dave
