Power Acoustik MOFO-124X 12" Subwoofer

When technology advances, products do as well. Does Lamborghini need to refine their cars every 2 years? NO, they do because they can. After 6 years, it is time for a change. Say “See Ya!” to the old MOFO, and welcome the new MOFO-X subwoofers! The new motor is refined and increases efficiency dramatically! MOFO-X subs use a non-pressed pulp cone for durability and smooth low bass. Like the original MOFOs, the new models use an aluminum dustcap that couples to the voice coil former and extends over the cone. Why? The fins brace the cone and eliminate cone flex during high excursion. Since the cap is aluminum and coupled to the coil former, it acts as a heat sink or heat extractor. Using the latest materials, the new MOFO-X subs yield superior performance!

Enclosure Recommendations

All enclosures should be made of .75” (3/4”) material only. When possible, make the baffle 1.5” (1 1/2”) thick and add .75” (3/4”) to the depth of the enclosure to compensate. All volumes INCLUDE vent/port and subwoofer displacements. DO NOT change the volume unless you plan on adding a substantial amount of bracing. For added performance, applying a coat of fiberglass resin to the interior walls will greatly improve sealing the enclosure. Adding a thin layer of poly-fill will improve response by smoothing out enclosure reflections.

Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
MOFO (Power Acoustik)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
12"
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
2700 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
1500 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Voice Coil Diameter
Diameter of voice coil, usually measured in inches.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
Not specified by manufacturer
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
Not specified by manufacturer
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
15 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Black
Blue
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Non-Pressed Paper
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Polyether Foam
Magnet Structure
Defines the overall structure of the subwoofers magnet.
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
No
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
No

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Minimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.00 cubic feet
Optimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
Maximum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
3.00 cubic feet
Minimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
2.00 cubic feet
Optimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
Maximum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
3.00 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
6-15/16"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
11-1/4"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

No

Electromechanical Parameters

Free-Air Resonance (Fs)
The free-air resonance frequency of the subwoofer, measured in Hz. At this frequency the weight of the moving parts is perfectly balanced with the subwoofers suspension system.
Equivalent Compliance (Vas)
This is the amount of air that has the same stiffness as the subwoofers suspension. The greater the rating, the lower the stiffness and larger recommended enclosure. It is measured in Liters.
Total Speaker Q Value (Qts)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including all dimensionless losses. Essentially, a high Qts value (closer to 1.0) means the subwoofer is great for sealed enclosures and a low Qts value (closer to 0) means the woofer is great in vented enclosures. A Qts of around 0.45 means the woofer will work decently in either enclosure type.
Electrical Q Value (Qes)
The subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including electrical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. The unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.
Electrical Resistance of Voice Coil (Re)
Amount of DC resistance of the subwoofer when measured with an ohm meter. Typically, this will read less than the impedance rating of the subwoofer.
Mechanical Q Value (Qms)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including mechanical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. This unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.
Efficiency Bandwidth Product (EBP)
This number represents the trade off between having an efficient woofer and one with a wide bandwidth. To calculate this number, take the Fs and divide it by the Qes. If the number is below 50, the woofer is designed for a sealed enclosure only. If it's between 50-100 it can be used in either. Lastly, if it's greater than 100 it's designed for vented enclosures.

Good Deal

February 20, 2012

This is a good sub for the price. I dont think there is a better deal out there. I have 2 hooked up to a 1500 amp (hifonics) running at 1 ohm. Before they were broken in I could smell them burning up a little bit so id turn em down but now they run pretty good. I think the RMS on them is not something to go by, I had a 122x mofo on this amp turned about 3/4 the way up and it blew in a few weeks. I am comfortable running the pair at 1500 watts RMS. I think 1500 watts is plenty, and at that level these subs KNOCK. I turn plenty of heads. I have played them loud and for long periods of time. If your on the fence about these subs I would buy them, get a hifonics 1500 and a you will need a charging cap or extra battery. You could easily spend twice the price and not get as much of a bang.

Best Subwoofer So Far!!

September 2, 2012

These are by far the best subs I've ever heard in my own car before or in anyone elses actually!! I Am running two of these babys on a "Power Acoustik Demon 6000 watt " I think this is the best amp for these subs and best subns for this amp. If you are contumplation on weather you should buy the 2 ohm or 4 ohm, I would buy the the 4ohm becuase if you are running only one of them, you can wire down to 2 ohm, and if you are running two of them, you can wire both of them down to 1 ohm, which is awesome for me because my amp is 1 ohm stable and puts out 3500 watt rms at 1ohm!! Thank you so much Sonic!! I would totally recommend these subs to everyone!!!!

Suprisingly good subwoofer

January 3, 2012

Suprisingly good subwoofer. I am usually a Rockford or Kicker person but wanted to go from dual to a single 12" subwoofer for space reasons. This was at least 5x cheaper for the same or more power handling than the brands I usually look at and I have to say I am glad I bought it. Very loud for a single 12" with the proper enclosure and very powerful and hard hitting.

cool woofer

May 27, 2014

This sub hits hard, I have it on a Brutus 2000 at 2 ohms, supposedly pushin 1400 watts and it thumps hard. The back of the sub is cool looking.
The tabs that cover the screw holes on the front would be cool if they fit
perfectly, mine don't. Wish I would of got the 122x so I could get down to
one ohm and give it even more power. Anyway it's a good buy my mofo is just now getting broke in, it seems to be a thumpin beast, just remember
what brand it is and how much it costs its not a JL, Sundown, or a DD.

I had two different setups before I bought 2 mofo 124x with a 4000 watt bamf amp, and these are by far the best I've ever owned. These things turn heads no doubt. I was shocked the day they came in, when I picked up the box with the two mofos it felt like I was carrying a load of bricks. I would highly recommend these subs to anyone looking for a lot of bang without having to spend too much money. I have the pair running at 1500 RMS and don't think i'll even waste the time turning them up because they are already tearing my car apart.

Holy s*** what the heck!

March 7, 2011

If you are on a budget and you want subs that are ridiculously loud, these are the subs for you. I have two in a slot ported box powered by a Hifonics 2000d and these things slam extremely hard. I have to rev up my car when I turn them up because my car bogs down and my lights go dim. They arent even broken in yet and my amp is only turned up halfway and these things quake. I do wish they would make the wiring a little easier like the alpine type rs, but for $150 you cant get anything as good looking and as loud as these things are. I hope they hold up.

I love these mofo's. I was skeptical about deciding these over the turantula t7's and the Vsw124. These were the best guy on the market for a $125 discounted subwoofer. I have no complaints, they flex, move air and sound great. I would recommend proper breaking in, and the proper box, that is CRITICAL. These are the best bang for your buck literally, plus there is an optional recone kit so you don't have to waste money buying an entirely new subwoofer.

August 20, 2013

I have two of these mofos wired to 1 ohm running 2200 watts. They slam so hard in a ported box my windshield wipers bounce off my window like no tomorrow. But I would definitely recommend breaking them in before really cranking them. And I'm not too sure about 1500 watt rms per sub I'm running 1100 watt per sub and they get a little warm. Just be careful but these are great subs!!

Bought 2 of these subs last week and got them in yesterday. Hooked them up this morning with a power acoustik bamf class D 4000/1. I've already played them for several hours today and I gotta say I'm beyond impressed. I have the amp 1/3 of the way up and they are slamming. I'm going to give it about another week and I'll turn them up another notch and see how it handles. For the price of these subs I don't think there's a better deal out there. If you're looking for top notch head turning bass for the right price this is exactly what you need.

The Best Subs!!!!

September 2, 2012

These are hands down the best subs I've ever heard personally!! I have two of these powered by a Power Acoustik Demon 6000D. They sound unbelievable. I have them wired down to 1ohm so the amp is pushing out 3500 watt RMS, which is sick... If you are debating on weather to by the 2 or 4ohm ones, i'd go with the 4 ohm....they are a bit cheaper and you can wire it down one of them to 2 ohm, or if you have two, you can wire them down to 1 ohm, but make sure your amp is 1 ohm stable. Thanks Sonic!! I would recommend this sub to everyone. I already set 3 car alarms off :)

Bought a pair of these subs and haven't had much playin time with them but I tried them a sealed box at 1.6cuft per chamber, with a line of polyfil with 2000watts at 1ohm and they don't sound too bad but I took the polyfil out and noticed they sound better and responded better and I did notice a. Burning smell in the box when I removed the polyfil so the next box I put them in will be 1.25cuft per chamber and I'm expecting better results, and for the price they're worth it.

is there any amplifier recommended for this product ?
Peter on Sep 4, 2014
Best Answer: You want to match your RMS wattage ratings of the speaker with the RMS wattage rating of the amplifier. It is recommended that you get a class D monoblock amplifier. Decide what ohms you plan to run the sub at then match the rms wattage of the speaker at those ohms with an amplifier. That is how you choose the proper amp for the subwoofer. I use a boss amp. And I run at 1600 watts rms at 4 ohms.

I have a Hifonics BRX 1200.1D 1200 watts@ 1olm 800 watts@ 2 olm . I'm trying to decide whether to get a dual 2 olm or dual 4 olm MoFo. If I get the dual 2 olm I can throw 1200 watts@ 1 olm but I'm not sure if 1 sub will satisfy and if I bought another later I would be stuck with a 2 olm load where if I got the dual 4 olm I could have 2 wired to 1olm .But for now I can only afford 1 and I would only get 2 olm load to the dual 4 olm. I've read tons of reviews and a few people are running just one and say it bangs but they said that about the Hifonics OLM800D2 and I bought it and it just doesn't do what I want. My car is a 98 Cavalier. I've had 2 dual 4 olm Kicker CVR's as well and they didn't cut it either. I like my sub or sub's to hit really hard. Enough to knock the mirror off the windshield and flex the body with a good bit of spl. I guess what I'm really wanting to know is do these sub's really hit hard enough that 1 would flex my car or should I prepare for 2 of them with a bigger amp. If I'll probably need 2 then I'll go with the dual 4 olm and save up for another 1 and a bigger amp. Does anyone have any input on what these are really capable of? Thanks in advance.

Best Answer: I must say your money will be well spent. I started off with one 4 ohm wired to 2 ohms getting 1600 watts of power, and this beast slams! In a ported enclosure there is an insane amount of flex. So much that I literally jumped when I saw it. A good 3-4 inches, no joke.

I then upgraded by buying a second mofo with its own amp to power it, enclosed in a dual sealed box. I highly recommend ported over sealed. They sounded better in a sealed enclosure but u lose the insane flexing capability that you get from the air traveling thru a port.

I have to say tho that you will definitely need a more powerful amp, under powering a sub can greatly damage it: and these subs suck up the power. They need at least the 1500 watts minimum.

My suggestion is to get an amp with it that will meet the required wattage, 1500-2000 watts should be safe. Then down the road when you buy the other one to match, get another of the same amp to power it, this will keep them in tune. Many amps have master/slave options which are perfect for this.

With two of these bad boys powered at 1600 watts each, the sound pressure literally takes your breath away.

Keep all this in mind when you buy it. Trust me, if you buy these subwoofers you will be very pleased. Mine are going on 2 years still slammin.

Best Answer: Hello Daniel,

Not knowing what amplifier you are using, we can only Guess what configuration your setup is calling for. However, BOTH sets of terminals MUST be used. If you wish to wire in parallel, then here are a few links showing the exact same process.
