Sound Staging and Imaging refers to the ability of a pair of headphones to create the placement of instruments and vocalists in a recording. A small sound stage is very difficult to determine where the instruments are in relation to the vocalists, everything sounds like it's coming from the same place. An extra large sound stage separates the instruments and vocalists so that you can clearly tell where each is on the sound stage.

Headphone Design

Headphone Type

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

In-Ear
Headband Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Traveler/Airplane
Acoustic Principle

The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types:

Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source.

Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room.

Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

Audio Features

Driver Type

The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Balanced Armature:
A balanced armature driver uses a coil wrapped around an armature which is held in between two magnets until it is stimulated by an electrical current. When stimulated, this armature is magnetized which causes it to rotate one way or the other around a pivot point which moves the diaphragm to create sound. Balanced armature driver headphones are generally earbuds and can have multiple drivers in each earbud.

Dynamic:
Dynamic drivers are the most common driver type. They feature a permanent magnet, usually neodymium, a voice coil and a conical diaphragm to drive your music. A dynamic headphone driver looks pretty much identical to any typical home theater speaker.

Electrostatic:
Electrostatic drivers are made up of an extremely thin membrane, usually a coated PET film, stretched between two metal plates. An electrical signal is applied to the metal plates to create an electrical field which, depending on its polarity, draws the speaker diaphragm toward one of the plates which forces air through the perforations in the diaphragm which generates the sound wave.

Planar Magnetic:
A planar magnetic driver is made up of a large membrane suspended between two sets of oppositely aligned magnets. An electric charge is applied to the membrane to induce movement and produce sound waves.

Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.
18 ohms
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
110 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
Power Output
Refers to the power output rating (in watts) of the headphones.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
10 - 19,000 Hz
Audiophile
Audiophile headphones represent some of the finest headphones available. Audiophile headphones produce genuinely outstanding sound quality as well as extraordinary build quality, components and comfort. They are truly the finest headphones available.
Built-in Amplifier
This refers to whether the headphones have an amplifier built-in.
Amplifier Recommended
This refers to whether a separate headphone amplifier is recommended for use with a specific pair of headphones. It is highly recommended that any headphone with an impedance greater than 100 ohms be amplified.
Pass Throughs
Refers to whether a pair of headphones has an output to connect to another pair of headphones.

Solid earbuds - not the best remote control

July 10, 2013

I like these earbuds well enough. They have good sound quality, a number of different sized, removable ear pieces (the clearish gray parts surrounding the speaker), which is nice. However, I have difficulty operating the remote control feature when I'm exercising, especially the double tap to play the next song.

June 30, 2013

The sound is excellent. These have the best bass performance of any earbuds I have owned. Once you select the best fit the noise canceling is very good. in the health club where there is a lot of noise... Instructors yelling, equipment noise etc.. The a volume adjustment buttons are very convenient.

Awesome earbuds

September 18, 2013

I ordered these earbuds after hearing positive reviews from my husband. I use them while walking a running. The sound quality is great and a big improvement over other less expensive ear buds. Can't beat the price- which was my Biggest influence in buying. Klipsch name speaks for itself also. Definitely would buy again. Only complaint is when I run then tend to 'slip out' of my ear- not Completely but enough that I keep Pushing in. I think this is just Me as this happens with every pair.

Horrible for iPhone 5 users!

September 17, 2013

Recently purchased these for everyday use. The third day of owning and using them the volume controller on the cable stopped working the headphones randomly activate Siri and turn the volume up and down on their own. I've tried then on multiple other phones, and only the iPhone 5 was it causing the Siri and volume issues.

This is my third pair of earphones. The others didn't like to stay in place while I was running. I have the Klipschs plugged into my iPOD nano. Impressed - better than Bose!

September 17, 2013

I purchased these earbuds as a replacement for my Bose in-ear headphones. I was greatly impressed with the quality of sound produced by these Klipsch earbuds and the integrated technology. After listening for over 2 weeks, I believe that these earbuds exceed the performance of my previous Bose in-ear headphones. They came with a stainless steel carrier case, and have proven to be very durable in a variety of conditions. I highly recommend this product to friends/family who want a top-quality product at a very reasonable cost.

Great sound but the remote control is not very durable

September 17, 2013

I really like the sound quality of these however the remote control is not very durable. I wear them when I go running and after about a month, the play/pause button stopped working. I returned them for a replacement pair but about another month later again the play/pause button stopped working. Also, when running the buds do not stay in your ears very well.

Decent

September 16, 2013

Great sound. I find the ear buds, similar to all my Klipsch in-ear products, function best when 'inverted.' Stay in ears with little to no adjustment on 5 mile runs and in the gym.

Cons are the mic. Frequent complaints from those on the other end that they have difficulty hearing or the sound quality is poor. Ideal would be ear buds from these and mic from the original device.

Serviceable if need something for only when active.

Great Earbuds!

September 3, 2013

These klipsch headphones are a top quality product. I use them every day at work, at home, and at the gym. They have held up to 4 months of solid use, and I would definitely buy them again. The microphone works excellently and people never complain about call quality. Sound quality is superb, and you should know I am very picky about the sound coming from my speakers. I paid about $45 for them, and use them for my android phone. I can't change the volume, but am able to answer and end phone calls with the middle button and can also access and control my default music app. Hope this helps.

Great service

July 18, 2013

Great product and great service. Easy and speedy shipping. The S4i sound is great, but the durability seems a little lacking. The cord is similar to the flimsy type you get with your basic white ipod earbuds, not a sturdy braided cord like i've seen in other higher end headphones. Overall a great product, and ideal if you are not intending to use during extreme activity when durability is essential.

Great lil buds

July 6, 2013

I own several products from Klipsch and they never disappoint. Every product is always great. The ear buds came with several tips so you can find the one most comfortable for you and nice case to keep them safe. Sound quality is great with clear highs and tight bass. I also feel the sound quality with any ear buds just like speakers depends on what they are plugged into like iphone or computer. They sound pretty good on the iphone though! Overall great ear buds and a great price even if they are an older model.

Great headphones!

June 25, 2013

These are great sounding headphones and instantly makes one happy over the decision to upgrade from the stock phones. Probably, headphones beyond may bring in diminishing returns (vs cost) but this is a great headphone that makes me smile everytime I listen to music.

June 18, 2013

I ordered the Klipsch Image S4i Black Earbuds for my daughter and she loves them. The sound quality is amazing and Sonic electronics had the best price for them on the internet. The shipping was very fast and we were very happy with the product. I would definitely use Sonic Electronix again!

Good bang for your buck

June 16, 2013

In my opinion these ear buds are a great buy for the money. The sound quality you get from them is just as good as the sound from the more expensive ear buds. The cord will not tangle easily and makes them easy to just throw in your pocket.

I have spent up to $300 on various headphones and these are my go-to pair in most situations. I especially like having them in while I'm on a plane.

Listen to the music

May 27, 2013

Six months ago I purchased a set of Klipsch IMAGE S4i ear buds on a whim. To this day, I love these ear buds. The sound quality is terrific. They are exceptionally comfortable and stay in place during all kinds of use. I even wear them at night. They have great sound reduction which helps when I am trying to go to sleep or listen to music on the plane.

Its a STEAL!!

April 1, 2013

WOW! I love these!!! and to get them under $50 is insane, but in a good way! The angle on them fits GREAT! Doesnt move or wiggle out even when I am on the treadmill. iPhone control actually works! Am I the only person that has had MULTIPLE headphones with the control buttons that say they work with iPhone's, and really dont??? I would recommend these to anyone who likes premium quality earbuds and cannot stand the apple earbuds, or anyone who wants a new pair! they sound incredible and came with a 2-year warranty!

Great Sound ... but for 4 runners/joggers?)

February 9, 2013

I finally found Earphones that don't hurt my ears and have fantastic sound. I bought them on sale, so the price was excellent. I don't know about durability as I have only had them a few days.
I did notice that if you happen to hit/move the top 4 inches of the cord, the vibration goes into the earphone, (you hear the russling in the earphones) So if that is typical of these, I don't recommend these for runners or joggers. I would highly recommend these othrwise.

Solid and Functional

November 28, 2012

I bought these headphones to replace my Bose ear buds. My primary use was with an ipod touch listening to music while working out. This set fits snugly in my ears and give me good sound quality. In addition, this set has a controls to change the volume or the track I'm listening to on the cable right around shirt collar level. I never have to pull out my ipod to change tracks or adjust volume. I now use them when playing guitar or listening to a track I laid down. And they've been more sturdy than the last couple of pairs of ear buds, too. When it's time to replace these, I'll still look around, but these are now my standard.

Great sound, wonderful frequency response, but fragile cable.

October 17, 2012

I love these headphones, work perfectly with my iPhone 4 but I'm about to return them for the second time due to the sound being lost in one ear due to a fault near the plug. I listen to music every day and carry my iPhone in my front pants pocket. It appears that 6 to 8 weeks of this is enough to cause the cable to become defective. IF you only occasionally listen to music and keep your phone on a desk or table all the time maybe you'll get luckier than me. Great product, fragile cable. What else can I say.

Very Good For The Price

June 6, 2012

So the sound in these is substantially better than similarly priced skull candy sets. I would actually put these in the same category as Beats (not quite as good, but almost half the price tag and they're really comparable in quality), only you don't have the name recognition so people walking by won't know how cool you are.

I've had these for about 6 months with no problems, but I put them in the case every time I'm not using them. These are a good deal for the price and the sound is good.

Good sound for the price

September 25, 2013

These headphones are awesome for their price. They have a flat response, not emphasizing nor minimizing any frequency range. I've read the plug is not very durable, but I'm the type of guy that takes care of my possessions and that hasn't happened to me, at least not yet. Very comfortable. Very glad I bought them.

Great Sound, not Durable.

July 21, 2013

For the money, this is the best sounding bud for the money. My first pair broke in about 12 months of regular use: the wire just frayed and pulled out. Flimsy wire, sigh. Despite that, the sound was so good I bought a second set. Still good value. Fit great, good bass.

Nice earbuds for your real buds

June 5, 2013

I got 6 pairs of these for my coworkers when they were on sale, and they work awesome! Klipsch is best known for high quality speakers, but the earbuds word just as well. Great product, especially if you can get them at a fair price.
