Taking the Polk Audio PA Series Into the Digital Era

The PA D2000.2 is Polk Audio's new high-efficient digital 2-channel amplifier. This amplifier is perfect for when looking to amplify a set of high quality car speakers or even entry level subwoofers within the respective ohm power rating. For example running a Polk Audio DB1040DVC in parallel to a final impedance of 2 ohms is entirely possible with this amplifier and since you have two channels you can actually run 2 of those subs, each to its own channel. This 2-channel amplifier gives you a variety options to better suit your own personal needs.

How does Polk Audio improve on their already popular and very well known PA series amplifiers? With technology advances Polk Audio has taken their PA series into the digital amplification. This means a smaller foot print, a super-efficient design which allows for lower power consumption and does away with a larger power supply. This allows the new digital PA series amplifiers to run far more efficiently with lower distortion and cutting or clipping. The new PA Digital series amplifiers are available in a monoblock, 2-channel, 4-channel, and 5-channel configuration making them accessible for any application. With a height of under 2 inches for all four configurations these amplifiers also offer a mounting convenience making them practically perfect for any vehicle. Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the RMS power created once an amplifier is bridged.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

I ordered this amp on a decision that it is cheap and has the 500rms I wanted. Plus I feel Polk Audio brand should be good enough to do the job. Man...I was wrong. IT DID ONE HELL OF A JOB! Obviously 500rms means power, but it isn't just SPL that this incredibly small Polk Audio amp provides; it provides superb subbass definition I have since long forgotten! I admit I wasn't expecting such a high sound quality out of this amp, but hearing is believing and this amp delivers! My subwoofer is AVI Sound SLS300, a high end subwoofer that once upon a time was paired with DLS Ultimate amp. This baby Polk did just as good if not better thanks to the higher power rating. It is just incredible. Build quality is awesome too. It feels well made and solid with a nice weight to it. The piano black finish is gorgeous, and connection is very very good. The size? My goodness it is a blessing. The price? Ummm, if I said it I fear Sonic will jack up the price! I suggests one thing for all of you guys wanting a high quality amp be it for front speakers or subwoofer; buy this amp! I cannot say about reliability, but thus far I never blown an amp so maybe it is down to installation. Hell, why not, I just gonna give it 5/5 because this product truly impressed me. Thank you to Sonic Electronix for the awesome delivery too!

Class D full range?

After reading online about the issues faced by high frequency reproduction and class d technology I was skeptical whether these amps would perform well at high volume/high frequency. While my setup may not be quite audiophile grade, the addition of this amp has definitely brought it up a peg. Seeing the Polk class D would run cooler and take up less space for the power, I bit the bullet and ordered. I am a believer now! This amp sounds great! While my Infinity Kappa 6x8's have always been a little on the bright side, they play much smoother than the other amps I've tried. Also, after playing the system at near full volume for 2hrs, the amp barely gets warm. Awesome! May or may not be audiophile grade, but for anyone with a half way decent setup (aftermarket amps and speakers) will most likely be satisfied! I wouldn't let the amp class decide for you, get to your local audio shop and test one out today!! By the way, did I mention the band-pass filter with the x10 multiplier? I think Polk just got a new #1 fan!! P.S. I have only heard about Polk durability... gave it 5 stars Settings have no graduated marks ... 4 stars

I bought this with the PAD1000.1 for a new install. Driving a set of SR6500's. I have never had these speakers sound so good. Auditioned with some Duffy, Adele and then to see how they handle a pounding, some Five Finger. Nice, tight midrange and the vocals are breath taking with this new D series amp. Like the other PAD, this amp runs COOL over a long long period. The clarity of this amp is just nothing short of amazing. The SR6500's really shine with this amp. Did I mention how tiny this thing is? You can install it anywhere. Same heavy duty 1/0 accepting power connection and a beautiful finish. State of the art in all aspects. This amp cannot dissappoint.
