A small sound stage is very difficult to determine where the instruments are in relation to the vocalists, everything sounds like it's coming from the same place. An extra large sound stage separates the instruments and vocalists so that you can clearly tell where each is on the sound stage.

Headphone Design

Headphone Type

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

In-Ear
Headband Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Earbuds
Specifically For

Traveler/Airplane
Acoustic Principle

The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types:

Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source.

Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room.

Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

Audio Features

Driver Type

The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Balanced Armature:
A balanced armature driver uses a coil wrapped around an armature which is held in between two magnets until it is stimulated by an electrical current. When stimulated, this armature is magnetized which causes it to rotate one way or the other around a pivot point which moves the diaphragm to create sound. Balanced armature driver headphones are generally earbuds and can have multiple drivers in each earbud.

Dynamic:
Dynamic drivers are the most common driver type. They feature a permanent magnet, usually neodymium, a voice coil and a conical diaphragm to drive your music. A dynamic headphone driver looks pretty much identical to any typical home theater speaker.

Electrostatic:
Electrostatic drivers are made up of an extremely thin membrane, usually a coated PET film, stretched between two metal plates. An electrical signal is applied to the metal plates to create an electrical field which, depending on its polarity, draws the speaker diaphragm toward one of the plates which forces air through the perforations in the diaphragm which generates the sound wave.

Planar Magnetic:
A planar magnetic driver is made up of a large membrane suspended between two sets of oppositely aligned magnets. An electric charge is applied to the membrane to induce movement and produce sound waves.

Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.
18 ohms
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
110 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
Power Output
Refers to the power output rating (in watts) of the headphones.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
10 - 19,000 Hz
Audiophile
Audiophile headphones represent some of the finest headphones available. Audiophile headphones produce genuinely outstanding sound quality as well as extraordinary build quality, components and comfort. They are truly the finest headphones available.
Built-in Amplifier
This refers to whether the headphones have an amplifier built-in.
Amplifier Recommended
This refers to whether a separate headphone amplifier is recommended for use with a specific pair of headphones. It is highly recommended that any headphone with an impedance greater than 100 ohms be amplified.
Pass Throughs
Refers to whether a pair of headphones has an output to connect to another pair of headphones.

Amazing -

September 17, 2013

Some of the best earbuds I have ever owned. Really do sound like a high-quality pair of $300 headphones once you get them in your ear right with the right earbud. Klipsch is top of the line!

Equal to $5 Maxells

February 17, 2013

Side by Side tests by myself (52), my son (26) and his friend (26) found no real difference. Their unbiased opinion slightly favored the $5 spare in-ear-phone over the S4s.

Excellent product for price.

August 5, 2013

The S4 Klipsch headphones have a very similar sound quality to their higher price point versions. The only negative I would give this version is that the cord used is a pain. Stiff, not easily straightened. Not a huge detriment, but not quite as comfortable, as the cord can hang out in front or behind you and get snagged on things.

On my 3rd pair. This one is going strong for 10 months now.
Light music, heavy music, these buds can do it all.
I blast Metallica through and through and these fine headphones deliver it - practically with no signs of wear.
Excellent noise isolation.
They put speakers half as cheap to shame.

Good sound but.....

May 24, 2013

Sound is great once you get them fitted in your ear, but they do not like to stay put. Can't use working out because they will fall right out. Also the cord is a major pain. Constantly kinked. Case is a joke also. They do look nice and have great sound as long as you are not moving.

Excellent earbuds! except...

May 16, 2013

These ear buds are great! Excellent sound quality, good rich bass. My only complaint is that the wire is kind of unruly. It is stiff and doesn't roll up well. The durability seems to be very good though. I have had these for 7 months and I have no problems. I am very hard on earbuds and they usually break after a few months. Maybe it is that stiff wire that I am complaining about that is keeping it together. I don't know, but If the stiff wire is the price I have to pay for durability then it is well worth it.

More than your money's worth!

April 28, 2013

These are the best in-ear headphones I have ever listened to! From clear sharp highs to solid bass with great volume even from relatively low output devices, they are a pleasure to listen to. The angled oval inserts in small, medium and large allow for a good seal in the ear for good isolation from ambient noise. There may be better in-ear headphones, but I'll bet you pay two or three times as much for even a little improvement in sound quality.

Well worth the money!

February 12, 2013

These are pretty much a bargain. The sound quality is up there with much more expensive headphones. It might take a bit of fiddling to get the correct fit with the correct size ear piece but it's well worth it. The only quibble I have is that the cord stays quite stiff and can be a little awkward. But that's a minor issue - they are well worth the money!

Great product except for one little thing

July 31, 2013

I've bought multiple pairs of s4 phones and if you like in ear these are the ones to get. Very comfortable, holds in the sound/blocks out the rest and if you get them seated right the bass can BOOM.

The only neg is that this last pair has a problem with the cord twisting up. It's relaxing a little after some months but not enough. If you can find them without that, they're perfect. Very good product for the price.

These are very accurate and great sounding ear buds. However, if they don't fit in the ear just right, they will sound tinny. I have to hold them in a certain position to get the base to sound normal. I shouldn't have to do that.

I use them for working out, lounging, car rides. No problems at all.
