Headphone Design

Headphone Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Over the Head
Earpiece Design

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

Enclosed-Ear
Specifically For
Some headphones can use an IR Transmitter in your vehicle, while some can be plugged into your media device and be used on the go or at home.

Acoustic Principle
The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types: Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source. Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room. Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

General Features

Noise-Canceling
Noise Reduction technology removes unwanted noise from a signal. Background or ambient noise can be removed to produce clearer speech and enhanced hearing. Typically these Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones are powered and use batteries to activate the noise canceling technology. Also referred to as Noise Reduction or Noise Cancellation.
No
Headphone Connection
This is how the headphones connect to the audio source.

Corded means that the headphones use a cord to transfer the audio signal.

Wireless means that the audio signal is transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

Corded
1/4" Stereo Jack Adapter
Some headphones will come with a 1/4" stereo jack adapter to connect the usual 3.5mm jack to a 1/4" stereo plug.

1/4" Stereo jack is a larger audio jack that select electronics have.

Yes
Volume Adjustment
Volume Adjustment means that the headphone (independent of the source) can adjust the playback volume. Many headphones and ear buds have in-line volume control, which allows adjusting the audible volume from a switch on the headphones cord. Other headphones have a volume knob on the headphone can.
Yes
Built-In Microphone
This means that the headphones or earbuds have a built-in microphone. This can be a microphone on the cord, built into the headphone, or even a boom microphone. These mics can be used for music devices like iPods, for Smartphones to make and receive calls, or for gaming purposes.
Yes
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
16 - 23000 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
110 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
Driver Type
The physical design of the driver in the headphones.
Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.

Strong sound for a reasonable price

September 18, 2013

For this value it is an excellent headphone. It is lightweight. The sound is rather bass dominated. Ideal for traveling.

Excellent headphones. They were a little tight for my head, so I gave them to my son. He likes them a great deal.

Great Headphones!

September 16, 2013

I was amazed at the clarity of these headphones. The bass was awesome as well. They do tend to become a little uncomfortable after wearing them for a while, but the sound is really, really great. I have been a fan of Klipsch speakers for years. I'm glad I got the headphones!

Excellent sound!

March 10, 2013

Pros: The best sound ever from a mid size. Good quality rig, though already broken from the kids playing with them. From the deepest to the highest notes excellent sound. With the closed construction there is very little disturbance from the surrounding. Better solution than with active sound cancellation. Cons: Not so comfortable after extended wear. The cord can't be exchanged if broken.

Love them!!

November 13, 2012

Fantastic sound. Clear and crisp. I chose these over the image one because I like to listen to music as it is recorded. Not extra bass or treble depending on the headphones EQ. If the song has bass they play it. If not, they don't make it up.

Great sound if they work on your player

November 2, 2012

While the sound quality is excellent for the price i found them to not work with all of my electronics. The built in volume and controls don't work on my 3rd gen ipod. While getting them to work on non-apple products was hit or miss. The ear cups seem to be too large to sit on my ears but too small to fit over my ears.

Amazing quality headphones!

July 18, 2012

I listened to the Image One headphones on display and I was surprised how well defined they were, even though they were only powered by my old iPod. So I contacted Klipsch asking what the difference was between the Image and Reference series, and the rep said that they are the same except minor styling and the Reference comes with a thicker, braided cable compared to the standard headphone cable on the Image. So I bought the Reference because it looked better, was cheaper on Sonic Electronix, and the cable is more durable. On to the sound... The highs are soft and not overpowering, but even the very soft cymbals are audible. The mids are very relevant, and the vocals are not muddled, with a distinct difference between guitar sounds, other midrange instruments/sounds, and vocals. The bass is very much present! I was surprised how relevant the bass was on my iPod which usually gives barely any bass on any headphone. Overall, the headphones seem very well balanced over all of the frequency range with nothing too overpowered or underpowered. I can't comment on their durability since they are only about a month old now, but they seem well made with no cheap plastic. They hug your ears so they do filter out a lot of ambient sound, but they do make your ears a little sore after extended wear, which is expected from noise isolating on-ear headphones. You could stretch them out a little if you want by putting them over something big for an extended period of time, but that would reduce their noise isolation ability. I also can't comment on the iPod controls since my iPod is too old and isn't compatible with these and many other iPod integration setups. They are definitely a great buy from Sonic since they are $50 cheaper here then on Klipsch's website, and I would definitely recommend them!

No Regrets

June 11, 2012

I decided on the Klipsch Reference One's after my old Sennheisers fell apart. I did a ton of research and read tons of reviews before actually buying them, and so far (six months in) I'm loving them. The sound quality beats my old Sennheiser HD somethings. It has good bass while maintaining a crisp sound, which is a balance that can be hard to find. They also look really cool. Only issue I've had is that, because of where they hang, the iphone controls (notably the pause button) are easily pressed by accident, which can be confusing when your music stops all of a sudden.
