In-Dash Receiver Specifications

Receiver Size

Single DIN: 1 DIN dimensions will work with all single DIN installation kits we have to offer. Single DIN radios are the most common size for after-market stereos.

Single DIN slot with flip-out screen: The DIN stereo includes a retractable, flip-out screen. Before purchasing, make measurements to be sure there is no interference with dash accessories such as A/C vents or shift levers.

Single DIN slot with a larger face: Standard single DIN size, but the display is larger then the standard single DIN size. Due to the nature of the larger face, problems may arise when installing in particular vehicles. These stereos are great for single DIN slots where you want a larger screen.

1.5 DIN: This size is very uncommon in vehicles, however this size opening is most commonly found in Chrysler and Chevrolet vehicles.

Double DIN: Approximately 4-inches in height, this size is becoming more common every year. Prior to 2000, this size was typically only found in Japanese vehicles such as those made by Honda or Toyota. Now, it is becoming more popular for many vehicles to be fit with a Double DIN opening.

Double DIN
Faceplate Security

Detachable / Removable faceplate security: The most common anti-theft feature. It allows you to take the faceplate with you, thus disallowing operation, which deters theft.

Security Codes: Mainly a feature in high end video units which do not have a detachable face / screen. Once the unit is uninstalled (or stolen), a security code (or PIN) is required upon reinstallation. Though you no longer have your unit after the theft, the thief also does not have your security code, which makes the unit useless. The hope is the thief knows which units have security codes and he/she chooses not to steal your unit because of the security code.

Ghost technology: This is not commonly used, but can be found primarily in a select number of 2004-2005 head units. It creates an illusion that no unit is installed by appearing completely black when turned off. Potential thieves may steer clear because it appears as though no head unit is installed.

Anti-theft covers: Similar to ghost and hiding faces because they only create an illusion that the face/unit is not in place.

ESN: Stands for Electronic Serial Number. Allows the disabling of the radio and allows tracking if it is stolen.

Security Code
Motorized Faceplate
Some in-dash car stereos feature a motorized faceplate that moves to expose a CD or DVD slot. This is a convenient feature that allows the front display to be larger and easier to read. The positioning of the monitor gives you control over the angle you would like to view information on the stereo.
Remote Control
Allows control of specific features and functions from a remote control. Typically they are used to prevent button wear on your radio, or to allow easier navigation of menus.
Peak Power Output
This form of power rating refers to the maximum amount of power an electronic device can handle or output in an instant without damage occurring. Often times this maximum is achieved during a brief musical burst, such as a drum accent, or low bass hit.

Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal to consumers. The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

50 watts x 4 channels
RMS Power Output
The amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS rating, the louder and cleaner your music sounds. The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.
18 watts x 4 channels
Preamp RCA Outputs
RCA outputs, commonly known as preamp outputs, allow you to connect one or sometimes multiple external amplifiers. An in-dash receiver will commonly have one, two or three sets of RCA outputs that can be used to connect external amplifiers and other components. One pair of RCA outputs will typically provide a full range signal that can be used for most subwoofer or speaker amplifiers. Two pairs of RCA outputs can typically be configured as four full range signals, or also as two full range and two subwoofer signals. Three sets of RCA outputs will almost always produce four speaker signals and two subwoofer signals for use with multiple amplifiers.
3 Pairs (Front, Rear, and Subwoofer)
Dedicated Subwoofer Preamp RCA Output
A dedicated output that has a built-in low-pass crossover for specific connection to a subwoofer amplifier that powers a low frequency driver, typically a subwoofer.
Preamp Voltage
The preamp output rating is measured in volts (V). The higher the rating, the stronger the signal. This results in less unwanted noise being picked up.
4 volts
Built-In Equalizer
The number of graphic or parametric equalizer bands the stereo receiver is equipped with. The more EQ options, the more you will be able to adjust your music to your liking.
Beat EQ 3-band parametric equalizer
Display Type
The type of display on your receiver refers to the monitor that is used to display the source information such as song names, radio stations, or track times.

Dot-Matrix Text Display: A simple display which uses dots in specific illuminated color(s) to light up and form letters or numbers that are displayed on the receiver.

Graphic or Motion Display: Typically found in mid to high-end receivers and give your text information and receiver more life by adding motion, backgrounds, or multiple colors to your display. There are types of graphic displays such as 3D Graphic, Motion, and OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) displays. They can range from one color to full color displays and typically allow you to select from one of many built-in animations, background images, screensavers or other graphics to enhance your experience and add an extra bit of personality to your system. Some units also come with software that allow you to load your own customizable pictures or animations.

LCD Monitor Display: Can be as small as 2" or as large as 10". Some LCD displays are motorized for angle adjustment. LCD monitors display full motion video playback as well as your standard text such as track status, radio station information and more depending on the receiver's features.

TFT-LCD Monitor
Display Color
The display color refers to the color of the text and or graphics on the receiver.

Multi-Color: When more than one color is on the display, for example one part of the text is white, while the other part is blue.

Variable-Color: The display colors can be changed by the user. If the default color of text/display is blue for example, the user can change the settings to where the color turns to red. Variable color displays are typically described in detail in the item's description.

TFT-LCD Display: In-dash receivers with a video screen that display multiple colors and often times video such as DVD, navigation or other video sources.

Full Color
Button Color
Refers to the color of the physical buttons on the unit.
CD Signal-to-Noise
CD Signal-to-Noise Ratio is a key specification that is often overlooked by newbies. The CD S/N Ratio measures how well the CD player silences background noise. Higher ratings in decibels (dB) indicates less noise, and generally a cleaner signal.
95 dB
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Playback Features

AM/FM Tuner
Most in-dash CD players have AM/FM playback allowing you listen to your favorite local radio stations.
FM Presets
The number of FM radio stations that can be stored as presets.
AM Presets
The number of AM radio stations that can be stored as presets.
CD-R/RW Playback
This feature refers to whether or not the CD player will play finalized CD-R discs and/or CD-RW discs.
MP3 Playback
This feature refers to whether or not the CD player will play discs encoded with MP3 files. To burn a MP3 encoded disc, use the "data" mode on your CD Recorder and finalize the session and/or CD.
WMA Playback
This feature refers to whether or not the CD player will play discs encoded with WMA files. To burn a WMA encoded disc, use the "data" mode on your CD Recorder and finalize the session and/or CD.
DVD / Video Playback
This feature refers to whether or not the receiver will play DVD (or other listed) video disc formats. Unless otherwise noted, the unit is not guaranteed to play recorded DVDs.
DVD Region Number
This is the region number that the DVD receiver is compatible with. Almost any device that has the ability to play a DVD disk has a region number. DVD region codes restrict playback of movies that come from geographical locations outside of your residing place.
Dual Zone
Dual zone means the stereo is capable of playing multiple audio or video sources between two separate locations.

Please refer to the item description for more details on how dual zone works specifically to the unit you are viewing.

Audio / Video Inputs

USB Input
This feature refers to whether or not the receiver features an input to connect a USB device via standard USB or mini-USB. The USB input may be a connection on the front or rear of the unit with an extension cable for connecting devices to the receiver. Some units have an optional input that allows for a USB adapter to be purchased separately and used with the unit.
Number of Rear USB Inputs
Additional Audio/Video Inputs
These inputs enable the unit to receive an audio or video signal from a separate source. There are many different types of connections and ways to accomplish this. Most common are RCA Composite cables and 3.5mm mini-jack plugs.

RCA Composite Inputs
These are your typical red, white, and yellow RCA composite cables that are common among devices with audio and video inputs. The red and white cables are dedicated for audio. The red cable is for the right channel and the white is for the left channel. The yellow cable is specifically for the video signal. Because this type of auxiliary cable contains 2 channels of audio, it will support stereo sound.

This is commonly referred to as a mini-jack or a headphone jack. It is a 3.5mm plug that transfers audio only. There is a right and left audio channel on the plug which allows for stereo sound playback.

3.5mm AV Input
These plugs look similar to the common 3.5mm mini-jack, however they carry a third channel dedicated for video.

This means that an auxiliary input is possible, but only with the use of an optional accessory. These optional adapters will sometimes use the CD Changer port or other port on the back of a unit that might restrict the use of other expandability features. These accessories are typically sold separately.

Monitor Screen Features

If a unit is touchscreen capable, you can control a majority of it's functions by touching the screen.
Monitor Screen Size
This is the size of the monitor on the unit. It is measured diagonally and in inches. The bigger the number the larger the screen.
Monitor Angle Adjustment

This means that the unit is able to tilt backwards so that the proper viewing angle can be achieved. On single DIN flip out monitors, this type of pivot means that the bottom of the screen stays stationary while the top of the screen retracts. On Double DIN units this means that the bottom of the screen slides forward while the top of the screen moves down, resulting in a backwards angle tilt.

This means that the unit is able to tilt forward so that the proper viewing angle can be achieved. On single DIN flip out monitors, a forward pivot keeps the bottom of the screen stationary while the top of the screen moves forward. On select Double DIN units, a forward tilt is sometimes referred to as a reverse tilt. The bottom of the screen remains in the same position while the top of the screen moves forward.

Left/Right Angle (Horizontal):
Some monitors allow the display to be rotated to the left or right in order to have the best viewing angle possible.

Slide In/Out:
A feature mainly found in select Kenwood units. It allows the entire screen to slide in and out. This is different from a forward/backward tilt in that the entire screen moves forward or backwards as opposed to just the top or bottom.

Display Adjustment
This refers to the many ways that a units display can be adjusted.

Possibly the best for the money

April 26, 2012

I just finished the installation of this Clarion NX602, and I'm still learning some of the features. So far, this unit is quite possibly one of the best in its class, especially in value! The installation was in a 2011 Grand Cherokee, which was no easy task, but with a PAC wiring adapter (and great customer tech support) it was as feasible as could be expected for a novice. Once the unit was installed, the initial set up of the unit was very self-explanatory through the on-screen menus. The touch screen is very responsive, with swiping enabled to change home-screens. I wired up a back up camera as well, which comes on very quickly when the vehicle is placed in Reverse. The Bluetooth works very well, and loads my missed, received, dialed, and contacts lists into the head unit. The unit promptly mutes music for a call automatically, then resumes when completed. The ONLY downfall I've found so far is that Pandora will not play from an Android based phone... Apparently that feature is reserved for iphones. Big mistake there Clarion... Very disappointing. Even with that major drawback, it's still an amazing unit for the money, and as far as speed, I would say it compares with the newest Kenwood models for hundreds of dollars less.

Good for the price

March 25, 2014

My Tahoe has been broken into twice in the past year so I was looking for a cheap head unit that still had the features that I was wanting. The unit was a breeze to install, the navigation works great (doesn't look the best though), I love the usb cable running from the back, and the apps such as Pandora work great.

great buy

March 21, 2014

Installation is relatively easy, just a plug and play system. Sound quality it puts out is absolutely astonishing, even on factory speakers. There is a definite learning curve to using the deck. Equalizer is a little small, and Bluetooth pairing is difficult, and freezes up if the device moves at all.

Very robust product after 2 years

March 12, 2014

I bought it here about 2 years ago for good price. No problem with shipping. Made installed by local pro Ė I believe this was an excellent idea. I think ppl who had some problems, they didnít install it correctly. I also added 4 new clarion speakers. Unit is working very well; Iím using it minimum 3 hours per day. It is paired with my Samsung S3. For music, if you have few giga, it is better to copy it to USB key or SD card - it is working very well like that. If you want to play from your cell, it takes forever to load. Very good quality of calls, synchronizing with cell contacts sometimes can be tricky. Quality of sound is excellent for the price you pay. Iím listening often classical music which is very demanding on quality and Iím quite satisfied. One remark - the choice of equaliser is too small. Other weak point is, if the temperature is below -20C all preseted radio stations are gone. Iíd love Clarion could add to GPS live traffic info, even this from google would be welcome.

Cool features and design but freezes very often

February 24, 2014

I was very exited by getting this GPS unit because I saw a review saying that it's outstanding and is one of the most complete head units and it really contain cool features, however it freezes often the controls stop responding always and I need to turn it off to stop the music or going to a feature that I need and that's really frustrating. The GPS unit it's very out of date or I don't know what's wrong but it use to take me 1 or 2 block away from the address that I'm looking for and it happens at least 40% of the times. I use to buy pioneer units and I never had a bad experience they always full my expectations but this time I decided to try whit clarion and I'm really disappointed the screen is really bad compared to pioneer's units it's too glare, the processor sims to be to slow for all the features. As pros for this unit I could say that when it works properly it's great it has a lot of cool features and options to customize the interface looks good and has cool colors. Anyway I'm gonna try to update the firmware to see if it gets better and stops freezing so much. I really hope it gets better that would be so cool.

OK...But Not Great

December 11, 2013

I decided on this unit after searching the web for a decent head unit for a decent price (Sonic's price is awesome, BTW!). I didn't think a Clarion unit would be an issue, but.... It will lock up while using my 4th gen iPod. The unit needs to be turned off and on again to reset it. I have read that the iOS on the iPod needs to be downgraded to work properly. Sorry Clarion...upgrade your firmware to work with the latest accessories!! It will randomly change to different screens (iPod screen to Input Selection screen to Navigation screen) The navigation and bluetooth work pretty well, but the software bugs are enough to make me want to tear it out and get something else and Clarion's website seems to offer little to no support. I thought Clarion, being first and foremost car audio, would never release a unit with these kinds of bugs. I guess the are right up there with the rest of the corporate world who sacrifices quality for profit.

Clarion nx602

December 1, 2013

Do not recommend this unit because I've only has it for a month, and do what I'm seeing I don't know how long it will actually last. No extra warranty options so I most likely will lose out in my money. No feature or benefit means anything if the unit itself doesn't last.

Very nice Deck, no issues

October 5, 2013

GPS is very good, comparable with Tom toms, but more features! Maps are a bit out of date, nothing serious and I am sure an update is available. The speeding reminders, fuel mileage and turn by turn directions are very nice. don't use CDs, but DVD works great, had to install a ground switch to bypass parking safety. USB works great listings are very nice and took my 32gb flash with no issue. Would not power a 2tb portable drive. Best have lots of room for install (I did) as there are a ton of connections and wires. Blue tooth works great, paired with no problems to my Note 2 GUI and general navigation through device is very nice and easy to find what you need, I do find if you try and do things when you first start the car (and deck) its a bit slow to respond, but if you give it a minute to finish loading the GPS signal its responds just fine (GPS is always on, cannot turn off). Be very careful and weary of OS updates, lots have had issues doing this and some versions are just crap, luckily Sonic sent it with a good version and I have had no issues Overall Great deck and Great price, anywhere local wants from $799-$999 for the same one. The only lacking piece is security, no removable parts.

Great Head unit

May 7, 2013

Iíve been using this product now for almost a year. I had a couple of issues with the head unit But mainly just wiring issues. The navigation works great, never had a problem getting to anywhere I Wanted. As for the radio , dvd, IPod and the S d card that works really good. I would recommend this product greatly, works really fine. As for the staff that work at power acoustics, I have but good things to say about them.

Clarion NX602

March 5, 2013

This was the worst buy ever. I bought strictly on price. My first worry was after I had it installed the installer came out and told me that I would not be happy with the product he said that it was too hard to operate. I just figured he was trying to make a sale. Here are the main issues with the unit: Bluetooth - everyone that I talk to says that they can not hear me. Make sure your phone is on the compatible list. If you have a newer phone you will be out of luck unless you have an iPhone. GPS - works well but when typing in the address it automatically tries to guess the address. It will grey the letters out that it thinks you do not need and it is sometimes wrong. Start up - when starting up after it has been off for a while the unit malfunctions and you have to manually shut it off and turn it back on. After the second time it has always worked fine but you have to do this at almost every startup. Updates - very frustrating with very little instructions on how to update. Once you figure it out it works smooth but don't expect it to be easy. The installer told me I should have went with a Kenwood or a pioneer. Trust me spend the extra money and do just that.

Great Unit

August 28, 2012

Installed this unit yesterday, still learning about all the features. What I can see so far this is a great unit. Navigation system is great. The ipod feature shows the album artwork if you have it on your ipod which is great. I have it in a 2007 Chevy Avalanche and it's a good fit, looks good in the dash. Great buy!!

Needs update!!

July 30, 2012

First off, bluetooth streaming will not work with my Galaxys S3. Very frustrating. Also, I have i06 on my iPhone and that won't work through bluetooth streaming or through ipod cable. It acts like it's not even there. ios6 is sue out officially soon, so they need to update quickly! Biggest thing is, it will not play all my music on random off sd card!!! You have to pick an album to listen to, it will not play all! That is really upsetting. I like to have all 32gb of music on random so I can just set it and forget it. Also, the unit freezes on occasion and you have to turn the car off or keep a paperclip handy to reset it. They really need to get an update so I can actually listen to music the way I want to listen. I have done all the updates available, but so far I have 2 phones that don't work and an sd card that I can only play one album at a time.
