Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
Type-R (Alpine)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
12"
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
3000 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
1000 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
2 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
24 - 200 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
85 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
20 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Dark Gray
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Kevlar Fiber
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Santoprene Rubber
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
No

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Minimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
0.65 cubic feet
Maximum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.25 cubic feet
Minimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.0 cubic feet
Maximum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
2.0 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
6-3/8"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
10-13/16"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

Great woofer!

March 19, 2013

The new Alpine Type R is phenomenal and so is the service SonicElectronix provides. Heres my story: I purchased the SWR-12D4 and shipping was very fast. With it, I also bought the HiFonics GLX 1400.1D. I wired the speaker at 2ohms giving it a total of 1000 Watts and WOW. This thing at 1000 Watts rattled my brains all freaking day. I do not recommend giving this speaker 1000 Watts unless you get it installed professionally. My type R blew after 20 hours of almost non-stop pounding (totally my fault). After I called SonicElectronix, they explained to me that you shouldn't wire it at 1000 unless conditions are absolutely perfect. I assumed the worst but here is the best part THEY REPLACED IT FREE OF CHARGE!!! They even gave me the 2ohm model instead so I could wire it at 4ohms @ 500 watts instead. I could not believe it. It says everywhere in the warranty and return policy that they do not replace blown woofers, but they did it anyway. SONICELECTRONIX UNTIL THE DAY I DIE!!

Owned for a little over one month...

July 9, 2014

I purchased this sub to pair with Pioneer GM-D8601 @1ohm and 800w RMS. I ran into issues with the subwoofer's durability and ease of use. After only two weeks of low to moderate volume levels (with matched gains for Pioneer headunit) one of the manufacturer banana plug jumpers popped off. Shortly after fixing this issue with jumpers of my own, the sub would sometimes work and othertimes not. The amplifier was tested and worked fine with the same cabling, so the problem was the subwoofer. Other gripes include the spring-loaded terminals on the subwoofer providing lower tension than I would imagine for a sub rated up to 1kw RMS. I would have preferred screw-on terminals due to the lackluster spring tension and location on the underside of the subwoofer. If you mount this subwoofer horizontally (typical install) with the "R" right-side up, the wiring hangs beneath the subwoofer, possibly shaking loose. Overall, the Alpine Type-R is still a good value for the cost and performance, but the factory jumpers and internal components may be defective or come loose after light use. Lesson learned; I will use my own jumpers from now on. Good thing I purchased the additional warranty as the loose jumpers was not the only issue I encountered. Hopefully the replacement is better.

Amazing subs for great price

June 14, 2014

I have 4 of these subs running off 2000 rms @ 1 ohm and they handle it with ease and rattle everything in my car. Probably one of the if not the best subs you can buy within this price range. I've owned a lot of subs and I love Alpine products. I have also owned both models of these subs before this one and they were good too. With these you get the value of what you normally have to pay twice as much for. Great build, great sound quality and output, overall great value, and price. Would highly recommend to anyone as long as you have the amp to power them. Type R series from Alpine are the way to go.

Pounders

June 9, 2014

Awesome speakers! These things pound and are often compared to rockford P3's but these are better in my opinion. Started off with three and added another one so now I have 4 of these. My power drill went through the cone of one of my subs and sonic electronix said there was no warranty against that but other than that these things slam.

Would not buy for several reasons

April 24, 2014

If you have an amp that pushes a true RMS of over 800 i would strongly recommend buying a different sub. 800 RMS or less for the money this is a great sub though..... I had this Sub for 1 day on a PPI 1000.1 amp.. it sounded great until i turned it up to negative 12 on my pioneer deck... Toast!! ... Waiting to hear from the warranty department in store credit I'll keep you posted!......

Best Subs You Can Buy

March 9, 2014

When I say "best subs you can buy" I mean, they are the best ones you can buy at a store (with the exception of Alpine Type-X's), because I'm not sure how true it is because I've never heard any, but I always heard the best subs you can get are the competition subs you have to order. I've had these installed for a bout a month now, and use them just about every day. They hit hard as hell and I have them under powered. They're rated for 300-1000 RMS watts, and I only have them hooked up through one Alpine amp that is 11000 watts, so they're only pushing out 550 RMS watts each (I have two 12's). From other reviews I read, many people have said only 1 of these 12" subs sound better than most 2 12" sub set ups, and I believe it. For anyone that is going to buy these (especially if it's more than 1) I recommend buying a secondary battery (Kinetik, Reissen, Stinger, etc.), and a battery isolator (do not get a capacitor, everyone has told me they're junk). I also recommend buying them from Sonic Electronix since they're $149.

Alpine SWR-12D2

January 9, 2014

I have this sub wired down to 1 ohms on a NVX JAD1200.1. I have it in a custom slot ported box tuned to 33 hz with 2.25 cubic feet of airspace. This sub hits crazy hard and low with excellent sound quality. This sub also has 20 millimeters of excursion, which means more air being moved, which is up there with a lot of the top of the line subwoofers. I am very impressed and pleased with the Type R. There is no doubt in my mind that you can feed this sub 1000 watts RMS. I've had it about a year now and it's still hitting hard. It looks mean and sounds even better. The only flaw with this sub is that it took forever to break in, but I also got it in the middle of winter. I highly recommend the Type R. Excellent product!

Just great

November 4, 2013

I bought from sonic and the service was great.Got it in time as ordered. I had the earlier model which was captured by my son. Had it for over four years and it still thumps so I decided to get one for myself but was introduced to this one by sonic service. Best sub I have ever owned. Sounds deep and lows clear. Bought it in Dec. 2012 and no problems whatsoever. Powered by hifonics 1400 @2 ohms and just sounds beautiful.I would definitely recommend it.Saw it in VIsions for double the price. My good. Thanks Sonic.

Installed this sub in my 2013 Accord sport sedan with an Alpine 500W RMS Digital amp and this sub can hit lower than anything I've ever heard For the money I wouldn't consider buying anything else. A few rattles I have to take care of with Dynamat but blows everyones ears off that I give a ride to. Takes a while to tune right with no rattles but You wont be disappointing!!

What amplifier is good for 2 12in. dual alpine type r subs?
John G on Jul 31, 2014
Best Answer: I have 1 of your subs hooked up to a hifonics Zeus 1200.1 and gains are up about 80% and I haven't had any problems for over a year. Because you bought the 12d2 version your setup will be a lot more expensive granted that if you wire them to one amp you can only wire them as .5 or 4 ohms. You won't find an amp that runs 2000 rms at 4 ohms unless you spend some serious money. Also running an amp with that much power at .5 ohms will kill your electrical system. So I would pick up 2 hifonics Zeus 1200.1 amps and be prepared to have your ear drums hurtibg

Best Answer: Yes. If you are running one subwoofer to a single channel then it is easy to run 1 ohm you just wire the dual voice coils in parallel.
