GS Series 4-Channel Full Range Amplifier

The new Sony GS series of amplifiers are the perfect way to get a great system in your vehicle. Whether you are expanding into a full-blown aftermarket setup, or are just looking to integrate better overall performance into your OEM setup, the GS Series has you covered. These amplifiers have been purposed-engineered with High Level Inputs - with Auto Turn-On - to integrate into most vehicles with an OEM headunit and also come equipped with Gold Plated RCA inputs for installs with a proper Aftermarket Headunit; both delivering the best possible audio transfer. These GS series amplifiers are also designed with a stylish heatsink and removable cover - which inconspicuously houses a full crossover board.

The XM-GS400, specifically, is a 4-channel amplifier that is capable of outputting a CEA Certified 70 watts RMS to four channels at 4 ohms. For setups that require a bit more power, the amplifier is stable down to 2 ohms, providing 80 watts RMS to four channels. In addition, this 4-channel amplifier can be configured to run as a 3-Channel or 2-Channel amplifier by utilizing its ability to bridge its channels. This well-balanced power output and flexibility is a perfect match for most component & coaxial speakers on the car audio market, along with some subwoofers as well.

Compact 10-3/4" x 8" Chassis

The Sony GS Series line of amplifiers are purpose-built to be as flexible and user/installer friendly as physically possible - that begins with the amplifiers' small footprint. At 10-3/4 in width, 8" in depth and only 2-1/8" in height, the Sony GS Series is capable of fitting underneath most seats, behind most seats or along the side panel of most trunk cargo areas. This allows you or your installer to build the system in a way that best fits the space provided by the vehicle.

Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

RMS Power @ 4 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
GS (Sony)
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. tested at 85x4 @ 4 ohms and 240 x2 bridged by PAS.

Nicely under rated. Reliable and clear A/B power and nice cosmetics (esp for recent sony amp)

Bought this amp just to try it. I'm impressed. So much so that it's now my "go-to amp" for those customers wanting more power then a head unit can offer. It is physically smaller then I expected which is great for tight spaces. With it's forced air (fan) cooling, I shouldn't have to worry about heat. The noise level is MUCH lower then I was expecting. Even with the gains relatively high (about 3/4) it's dead silent from the drivers seat (car parked in the garage). The sound quality is great. It's a very musical amplifier. Great bass, great mids, great highs. Excellent imaging and sound stage. I like this amp over my Eclipse and even over my JL 300/4 which I've now sold. As for the power. It does every bit of what it's rated to do. I thought, for the price, if I needed more power I'd just get a second one and run them bridged. Not the case. This amp has plenty of power. I run the Alpine SPR 6x9s in the rears and a custom 8" component set with hand made crossovers in the front.

The main reason I got this amp was because it has "Auto Turn On" , which I figured would save me time from poking around my 2014 Dodge Avenger. Not only was that TRUE, but I didn't realize until the install that everything else about the amp was going to save me time. The size of the amp made it easy to mount where I was hoping, the TOP mounted knobs made it easy to reach, re-reach and tune. AND BEST OF ALL, the cover makes sure my kid doesn't go in and mess things up! ha. GREAT AMPLIFIER!!! Oh yea, and AWESOME sound quality. It makes my 6x9 sound like I have a subwoofer..which saves me money from actually ahving to buy one!
