Bridged RMS Power

Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the RMS power created once an amplifier is bridged.

This form of power rating refers to the maximum amount of power an electronic device can handle or output in an instant without damage occurring. Often times this maximum is achieved during a brief musical burst, such as a drum accent, or low bass hit.

Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal to consumers. The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
GM Digital (Pioneer)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.

Total Peak Power Output
The total peak power output is measured as the wattage per channel multiplied by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

It is measured during a brief musical burst, such as a sudden drum accent. Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal.

The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

This amp is seriously packing for what you pay for it. It is my first digital amp and I am beyond satisfied with it. It has all the bases covered. I have it running my door speakers and it does not disappoint. I would buy this all over again if I had to buy an amp. Sounds great with my Pioneer speakers and head.

I got this amp in my challenger with 6/9 three way INFINITY KAPPAS and 6/5 two way INFINITY KAPPAS. All i can say is wow. THANK you sonic electronix for the low prices and free and fast shipping. I also got the pioneer GMD 9601 pushing 2 12inch keenwoods in a sealed box in the trunk. What a nice set up.

I have always ran higher end Premier and Pioneer headunit's with complete confidence. This is the first time I've ever taken a leap with a Pioneer amplifier. My experience has only been with class A/B amplifiers. This amplifier retires an older PPI 4ch and powers a Diamond Audio Hex component set in the front and dual 10's in the rear. There is no shortage of power with this unit. It seems to produce its sustained rated power with ease. Many times it's pushed through long road trips and has not even gotten hot. I will not concur with the others in that it has the fantastic sound quality. It has good sound quality. I believe that this is the trade between digital and analog amplifiers. I've spent much time with both live and recorded music that I notice a slight coloring of the music as compared to decent A/B class amplification. While crisp, the brighter notes sound over processed a bit. The warmer tones and bass notes do sound quite good. While I do wish that the unit provided for a remote bass knob, its very easy to set up and its small footprint and cool operation makes for a very flexible installation. This is more machine than one would expect at this price point and will work very well for most.

Works great. I have it powering my 4 door speakers in my 2001 GMC Yukon. I have Focal 6.5" components and they sound pretty good. Pioneer head unit and sub amp as well. I'm pleased. The 8604 runs cold. I've never even felt it get even a little warm.

Owned this 4 chanels amp for one months sor far. Amp is very cool; used with my pioneer FH-X700BT head unit to power my doors speakers: DB6501 - RMS of 100 Watts in the front DB651 S - RMS of 55 Watts Midrange. I love the sound that this amp brought in my car. I bought this map for three reasons ( class FD, very small , and price vs wattage). So far, I am very happy with my purchase. I can't say anything about the durability yet. So my review about the durability does is not final.

this thing is little i have it under my passenger seat, with 4ga amp kit. thing has never been hot runs super cool. puts out all the power i need, just need the head to match it now. it does cut out every now and then manual says its cause the radio cant give it a good signal and possible bad rca

I search for that particular amplifier long time ago and find it at Sonic electronix web store almost for half of original price. I install it myself and instead of running four speakers of it i did 8 of them (four at front 4Ohm each and four at rear 4 Ohm too and every pair of speakers i connect in parallel what give me 2 Ohm load and 150 watt RMS for each channel,600 watt total).Sounds incredible because amplifier supply more then enough power to my two front pioneer punch series 6.1/2inch. speakers(each 100 watt RMS) with pair of Infinity Kappa twitters(50 watt RMS each) and two rear Infinity Kappa 6x9inch 3 way speakers(each 110 watt RMS) with two Polk Audio dome twitters{each 60watt RMS).I recommend this amplifier for any car audio enthusiast out there.And Sonic Electronix ROCKS !

This thing really knows how to put out some power. I have this in my 99 grand prix along with pioneer d series speakers. The highs really sound crisp. It is set up to work as a highs amp so there is no bass but I am going to get some subs hopefully soon.

I have had Pioneer Amps before and had good luck.
For this amp, Good S/N ratio, power, size, low THD, Variable crossovers, etc. etc. and price was within a reasonable range for my budget. If not for this amp, I would have had to spend $50 to $100 more for an acceptable amp.

I got another question. Can you have multiple ohms at the same time? For instance, channel 1 and 2 at 4 ohms and the other two at 2 ohms. Or three at 4 ohms and one at 2 ohms.

Best Answer: You can definitely run two ohm loads on this amp at the same time. The only restriction is that each pair of channels has to match. So you can run 1&2 at one ohm rating and 3&4 at another. Say you want two speakers per channel in front, you would run the front channel pair at 2 ohms but each speaker would still see a 4 ohm load (given they are 4ohm speakers). I might add for the size of this amp it packs some serious punch.

how at 2 ohms its 150rms but at 1 ohms its 125rms?

Best Answer: Normally you're right...power output does increase as impedance (ohms) drops. Yours are the same specs that Pioneer gives on their site. The best explanation I can find is in the last sentence of the following paragraph. Hope this helps. ((( High Current Amps:
Many people think that a car audio amplifier has to be bridged into a low impedance load (2 ohm mono) in order to produce a lot of power. Well, this isn't necessarily true. Some large high current amplifiers are designed with a relatively low rail voltage. These amplifiers would need a low impedance load (2 ohm mono or 1 ohm stereo) to produce their maximum power output. Other amplifiers have a relatively high rail voltage and will produce full power in a higher impedance such as 2 ohm stereo or 4 ohm mono. There is no impedance which can be considered best for all amplifiers. You must know what the amplifier was designed for, to know what load will produce the most power output. ))) Looks like this amp was designed to make max. power @ a 2 Ohm load. I can tell you that I connected this amp to (4) Pioneer TS-D6802R speakers, 1 on each channel, 2 in front doors and 2 in rear xtra cab side panels and it sounds incredible!!! The amp runs cool... One of the best setups I've ever seen at this price level! Don't skimp on wire, get heavy enough wire for all connections!!! Very important!!
