Headphone Design

Headphone Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Over the Head
Earpiece Design

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

Acoustic Principle
The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types: Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source. Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room. Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

General Features

Noise-Canceling
Noise Reduction technology removes unwanted noise from a signal. Background or ambient noise can be removed to produce clearer speech and enhanced hearing. Typically these Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones are powered and use batteries to activate the noise canceling technology. Also referred to as Noise Reduction or Noise Cancellation.
No
Headphone Connection
This is how the headphones connect to the audio source.

Corded means that the headphones use a cord to transfer the audio signal.

Wireless means that the audio signal is transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

Corded
1/4" Stereo Jack Adapter
Some headphones will come with a 1/4" stereo jack adapter to connect the usual 3.5mm jack to a 1/4" stereo plug.

1/4" Stereo jack is a larger audio jack that select electronics have.

No
Volume Adjustment
Volume Adjustment means that the headphone (independent of the source) can adjust the playback volume. Many headphones and ear buds have in-line volume control, which allows adjusting the audible volume from a switch on the headphones cord. Other headphones have a volume knob on the headphone can.
No
Built-In Microphone
This means that the headphones or earbuds have a built-in microphone. This can be a microphone on the cord, built into the headphone, or even a boom microphone. These mics can be used for music devices like iPods, for Smartphones to make and receive calls, or for gaming purposes.
No
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
5 - 22000 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
100 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
30 mm
Driver Type
The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Best all around option I can find-have bought 3

January 6, 2014

I bought this model last year for my 8yr old son, good enough specs and reasonable price. I bought my oldest son a pr of Beats and they are just way overpriced for their specification and performance but he just had to have them. I perform a lot of video editing work at home and work and had been searching for a new pair for myself. I considered price ranges up to $200+ but they were just hard to justify on a combination of my budget and performance levels that would really make a difference. I bought myself a pair finally and am very happy. Bought my 3rd son a pair as well. Dynamic range is good, good bass but not overdone/muddy like some other more expensive ones.... needed realistic sound. Foam comfort is good but foam padding weakens easy although still comfortable. I wish they folded smaller but not a big deal. The best thing?... the flat cord! Ever turn your earbuds into a bird's nest?.. not with the MDR-XB400. Also like the 90 degree plug. This review is based on professional audio work for an adult down to an 8yo shooting basketball with them on.... after buying 3 I would definitely advise someone to seriously consider this model. If you have a deeper budget you can consider some higher models but you may not be gaining much vs other items you might want to buy.

Decent pair of headphones

December 5, 2013

The soundscape of the headphones is quite wide and detailed. The thumpy bass and undistorted highs made listening to dubstep and hip hop an extraordinary experience. I found the sound of the headphones a bit tinny though and wondered if this was because they needed abit of wearing in. The headphones are of decent quality for their price and i am satisfied with what I got for my money.

head stripe

November 10, 2013

The one and only problem I've noticed: it is not comfortable to wear it all day cause there's not a soft part to cover the head stripe. It hurts after 3hours of use. Thanks!

Sony MDR-XB400/BLK

October 3, 2013

I purchased these headphones some months ago and I am certainly happy how they held up. Great on the price as well. The sound clarity is clear, they handle the highs and mids nicely, not top of the line but it still sounds really good. The thing that sold me on this was that these headphones were made for bass and these headphones meet my expectations, especially for the price. They are not overly powerful as I was hoping. Though they do hit pretty hard with the right songs (such as bass boosted songs). Not meant to be noise cancelling but they do block out the exterior nose fairly well. Also ergonomically, they fit/sit on the ear very comfortably. The ear foams are softly padded and feel nice on ear. They are adjustable and I can wear them for long hours without any 'ear'itation :) If you buy these headphones I doubt you will be disappointed or regret buying them.
