Headphone Design

Headphone Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Over the Head
Earpiece Design

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

Specifically For

Acoustic Principle
The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types: Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source. Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room. Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

General Features

Noise-Canceling
Noise Reduction technology removes unwanted noise from a signal. Background or ambient noise can be removed to produce clearer speech and enhanced hearing. Typically these Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones are powered and use batteries to activate the noise canceling technology. Also referred to as Noise Reduction or Noise Cancellation.
No
Headphone Connection
This is how the headphones connect to the audio source.

Corded means that the headphones use a cord to transfer the audio signal.

Wireless means that the audio signal is transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

Corded
1/4" Stereo Jack Adapter
Some headphones will come with a 1/4" stereo jack adapter to connect the usual 3.5mm jack to a 1/4" stereo plug.

1/4" Stereo jack is a larger audio jack that select electronics have.

Yes
Volume Adjustment
Volume Adjustment means that the headphone (independent of the source) can adjust the playback volume. Many headphones and ear buds have in-line volume control, which allows adjusting the audible volume from a switch on the headphones cord. Other headphones have a volume knob on the headphone can.
No
Built-In Microphone
This means that the headphones or earbuds have a built-in microphone. This can be a microphone on the cord, built into the headphone, or even a boom microphone. These mics can be used for music devices like iPods, for Smartphones to make and receive calls, or for gaming purposes.
No
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
15 - 28000 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
99 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
45 mm
Driver Type
The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.

Great headphones at a great price

February 8, 2014

I bought these headphones for $100. At that price, they are a steal. Sound quality is excellent. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I would classify the sound as clear and crisp. Vocals are clear, bass levels are right where I like them (probably a little on the low side for bass enthusiasts). Another plus for these things is style. I wanted headphones that had great sound, yet I could use outside and look presentable. That ruled out some higher priced alternatives. Overall, these are great headphones. I probably would've paid another $50 or more for these and still have been satisfied.

satisfied

January 3, 2014

I've had these for over a month now and the thing I find is these headphones do well if the music you're listening to is properly balanced. It picks up highs and mids pretty well. It's not too bassy and not too high, it's just well balanced. I love them, I'm happy with this purchase.

Great Value for a very good HEADPHONES

January 2, 2014

I have owned various sets of headphones for years. But, I was not going to spend over $100 for headphones that really didn't sound that great In my opinion I believe that most electronics devices are way overpriced. I saw all of the positive reviews for this product so I gave them a try. They really have a nice clean sound from ample bass, smooth mids and crisp highs. This is a great buy for$99.You won't be disappointed. And since Sonic Electronix is an authorized dealer, you don't have to worry about purchasing FAKES.

ATH-M50RD Headphones

December 23, 2013

Always heard about the ATH-M50 headphones but never got around to buying a pair, until now. After briefly owning Beats Studio, which had extremely inaccurate bass, really flabby upper bass with NO depth, and ho-hum highs, I immediately sent them back for a deserved refund. It should be against the law to sell those at that price. The AT's became available at SE for a surprising and attractive price, I was disappointed with the Beats and I thought, "Why not, it's time I bought a pair and have a listen." Ha! Smooth, accurate balanced sound. If the recording has GOOD bass material, you'll HEAR it with these, and LOW bass, not that flabby crap. Listen to some Stanley Clark, or the Telarc recording of the 1812 Overture...with Howitzers. Yeah buddy!

Great headphones - great price

December 23, 2013

I bought these headphones for my son who actually wanted Dr Dre beats until we both did some research and found out that while Dr Dre rarely made any major lists of good quality headphones, the Audio Technica's were almost always there. We're both glad we chose this model. The sound quality that comes from the headphones is excellent and the "cool factor" of how he looks with them either on, or hanging around his neck is just what he was looking for. :-) The best part is they were less than half the price of Dr Dre. His friends have all asked "where'd you get those awesome headphones?", which just goes to show you don't have to buy the most expensive product out there to impress your friends. Not only do these headphones have great sound but they are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The only draw back I have seen is that the cord is a little long but that's minor. Overall this is a really nice product offered at a very competitive price and well worth the money spent on them.

Very good set of cans

November 24, 2013

I've let these babies burn for about a month now and they sound better every day. Spent a lot of time trying to find the right pair of headphones for my: Music Preference: EDM, trance, vocal trance, and the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell, Tiesto, Guetta, Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Krewella, Madeon, Etc. If you like that kind of music, these headphones are fantastic. I enjoy all genres of music on these actually. Style Preference: These headphones are very stylish (especially in red) and I find myself getting complimented daily on their appearance. Fit on my head: I have a huge head (size 8 in 59fifty hats) and was worried about these fitting. No problem at all. Some other pairs I considered: Beats (too pricey/ didn't like them in store) Sol Republics (on ear were uncomfortable) BOTTOM LINE: you can't find much better quality headphones for this price. Get these.
