Brutus BRX Amps: Brutal to Competition

Hifonics Brutus Crossovers

Accu-Cross Crossovers for Sound Shaping

The Gods have struck again from Mt. Olympus. The famous Brutus amplifier has gone through a redesign and now features a new look along with amazing sound. The design for the new Brutus BRX amplifiers has a blue illuminated underglow that gives the amplifier a floating appearance when properly mounted.

The molded and angled illuminated terminals add to the stylish design and also provide stress-free installation access. Accu-Cross crossovers allow for adjustments and sound shaping. The Ultra-Fi MOSFET power supplies ensure the amplifier can maximize its sound capabilities. The new Brutus BRX amplifiers take it to the next level, and are certainly a brutal amplifier.

Hifonics Brutus Terminals

Molded and Angled Illuminated Terminals

The full-range multi-channel Brutus BRX amplifiers all feature Super A/B Class technology. This complex circuitry was initially developed purely for the flagship Mt. Olympus amplifiers – however this superior technology was passed on to the Brutus line as well. This efficient circuitry allows for maximum sound quality while also ensuring maximum efficiency.

Initially Brutus amplifiers were only monoblock amplifiers by Hifonics, however for 2013 they deicded this amplifier series was too good to pass up, and added two-channel and four-channel alternatives to their purely subwoofer filled lineup. These new stylish multi-channel amplifiers were welcomed with open arms by the car audio industry, and have performed extremely well on the market since being released.

Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

RMS Power @ 4 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

150 watts x 4 channels
RMS Power @ 2 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 2 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

300 watts x 4 channels
Bridged RMS Power

Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the RMS power created once an amplifier is bridged.

600 watts x 2 channels

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
Brutus (Hifonics)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

AB
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
4
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

1200 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
2 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
4 ohms
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
0.05%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
1 pair
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
High-pass (HP)
High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

10 - 15000 Hz
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

30 - 250 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
90 dB
Channel Separation
Also referred to as crosstalk. The amount of interference on one stereo channel caused by the leaking of the other stereo channel. The higher the rating in decibels (dB), the better the Channel Separation.
80 dB
Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.
0 - 10 dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
40A x 3
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.

A real performer

March 17, 2014

To me, the multi channel amp is what makes the system. If your system sucks without a sub, it will suck with a sub. Finding both great value, and great performance out of a multi channel amp seems to be very hard these days. I took a chance on this amp and installed it to two sets of MB Quart premiums,(pvm216). It rocks!!!! It's delivering every ounce of its rated power, and its doing so without going into its protect circuit after long periods of use,(hours). More than enough power to push any component set that I can think of. I'd put this amp up against anything on the market even at 3 times its price point. No, its not a Zapco c2k4, but its not $1500 either. The only negative is the control knobs from 1983. You need a screwdriver to adjust them. If building an amp rack with multiple amps, plan accordingly.

Do not listen to the other review. This amplifiers perfect!

June 29, 2013

This amplifier is the best you can get for this price. The terminals may be at a 45 degree angle or so but it actually is not a problem at all. I Have played this amplifier for 4 hours straight and the amplifier is not near getting hot. I highly recommend this amplifier to who wants quality sound at an affordable price. No problems at all. This was the best 4 channel amplifier i have ever had. Hifonics is really doing better with the BRX Series.

Awesome amp!

August 14, 2014

I am currently powering an alpine spr component set and 2 JL zr800 8" subs with this amp and so far its been terrific. 2 different eqs for each pair of channels so if youre running different component pairs as I am you can set your gains and filters for the specific set you want. Before I purchased this amp my only concern was complaints on them running hot. Mine is mounted behind my back seats with about 2" of space from the sub box and I have had no heat issues, even in 95 degree florida summer. Only thing is it is quite large so if youre tight on space be sure to check the specs. I am also running a zeus 1800 mono which is nearly half the size of this big guy! Awesome amp, for the money you really cannot go wrong.

Great amp for the price

June 6, 2014

The only big downfall to this amp is that it gets very hot. I guess another downfall is that it is rather large. However, I am running it full force pushing 4 tweeters and 4 6x9s. It does the job and is very nice looking with the new lighting features. I'd recommend it to any one who needs some extra power but doesn't have a lot of money. I've used Hifonics for years and have always been happy with them.

Pros: 1. Amazing Look 2. Lights Up Cons: 1. Angled Down Inputs 2. Overheats 3. Mehh Power Output 4. Damages Easily My Experience with this AMP... Wow. Terrible. My Setup consists of: 0 Gauge from battery to 150 AMP Fuse (11-12" from battery) 0 Gauge from Fuse to 2.5 Farad Capacitor (Cap has 0 Gauge Ground) 4 Gauge from Cap to AMP (AMP has 4 Gauge Ground) This was powering my SubWoofers (Yes, I know it's a 4Channel AMP, I'll explain why) The FIRST AMP I got I stupidly wired it down to .5 Ohms, Slapped a little bit, then it threw itself into Protect, then totally killed itself and the lights/power LED flickered until I cut all power and took it out of my car and requested the RA. The SECOND Replacement AMP I got, was not Brand New. It was a refurbished AMP, that was also not the one I sent back. (Second AMP had two Warranty Stickers on it, one broken.) I kept it at 2Ohms and it worked for a couple weeks. Then it as well died. This time, it just didn't turn on. It had Power according to my Multimeter, and the Remote was giving it Power. As a test, I did run a bypass from the 12v to the Remote, but it stayed off. ANOTHER THING I NOTICED: While my Subs aren't all that great (12" MTX Terminators) My Dual Electronics 800Watt AMP and this 1200Watt Hifonics AMP, Hit about the same... The 800Watt having about ~100RMS While the 1200 SHOULD have had ~600. SonicElectronix the RAs flawlessly, I now know to stay away from atleast THIS Hifonics AMP. As to why I have a 4 Channel AMP on my Subwoofers, I am currently in the middle of buying a nicer car (Honda to a BMW) I don't have it fully in my possession, but I planned on buying some "upgrades" for my Honda, that I could take out and reuse in the BMW. The Plan was: 2 HiFionics BRX1200.4 for Mids/Highs (Total of 10 Speakers) 2 Brutus 2000Watt Mono Amps 2 15" Kicker L7s All Audio Dampened, Etc. 2 YellowCap batteries (One Main, one Backup) 2 Alternators, Was looking into Mechman, but I'd have to get a custom mount, plus don't know if I can actually fit them in the BMW.

This amp does have a lot of power. But it does tend to heat up and shut off, even with the 4 fans I put on the back of it. Four 2 inch fans. Still gets hot and shuts off, running it at 4 ohms. Even though it has this issue I plan to get another one.

Nice amp.. but HUGE

June 3, 2013

Powerful, clean sound from this amp at an unbeatable price and definitely pushing the rated power. My own gripe is that this thing is HUGE. As in.. WOW huge. It dwarfs my 1800w Brutus amp from last year and barely fits in the mounting location. Make sure to check the specs while you're planning your system out or you may be in trouble. It's practically twice as long as my GLX100.4 amps and only putting out 50% more power.I do have to reitterate that this amp is LOUD! I had to turn the gains way down to match my 4 other GLX100.4 amps. I also REALLY wish that Maxxsonics would upgrade their controls and wire terminals. The dials are the same as they have been for the last few years which is a weird little rounded flathead dial.. that a flathead screwdriver doesn't really fit in.. and if you push on them, you can feel them bend inwards into the amp which tells me that they're physically weak. These 45 degree power/speaker connections are a huge pain in the rear as well. Come on guys. How about some actual mini knobs that are mounted with stregth to the faceplate instead of the PCB inside. Overall.. HiFonics still wins hands down for $$ to power to quality ratio with the new BRX series. You just can't get better power for the money.. period. Just.. for next year.. how about a little more than just some blue LEDs for an upgrade.. FURTHER EDIT: After a good amount of listening at high volumes, I'm experiencing thermal shutdown when all my other amps are just fine.. and this one is turned down to match and not even stressing out! PAIN. Ugh. WHY did they have to discontinue the GLX Gladiator series? Those amps were bulletproof and completely awesome.
