Power Specifications - Subwoofer Channel

RMS Power @ 4 ohms
The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far. If the final impedance of your speaker(s) or subwoofer(s) equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound. The 5th channel on these particular amplifiers are usually dedicated for driving subwoofers.

Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

Peak Power @ 4 ohms
This form of power rating refers to the maximum amount of power an electronic device can handle or output in an instant without damage occurring. Often times this maximum is achieved during a brief musical burst, such as a drum accent, or low bass hit.

Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal to consumers. The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison. However, some manufacture's do not provide an RMS figure and therefore one cannot be advertised.

Peak Power @ 2 ohms

Bridged Peak/Max Power

Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the Peak/Max power created once an amplifier is bridged.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
Brutus (Hifonics)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
1 - Mono
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

1100 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
4 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
1 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
Not Bridgeable
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
<0.1%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
No
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
1 pair
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

35 - 250 Hz
Subsonic Filter
Allows you to block (filter) ultra-low frequencies that your subs cannot reproduce.
15 - 35 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
>95 dB
Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.
0 - 10 dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
Yes
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
60A x 1
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.
No
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

bought this amp two weeks ago. Have it running a power acoustic mofo 15 in a 3.77 cu ft box!! Hits really hard and the amp allows for bass control so hitting the lows was easy. Windshield flex is legit for it just being the 1100. Love the new hifonics amps

April 2, 2014

this thang bangs it is over 1100 watts if u send it in to clip mode with bass boost up it throws out probably 1200 to 1400 cause cea compliant means its 1100 before it starts clipping which means it could be 1189 watts but it would funny if it said brx1189 buy u won't be mad

Good amp for the price

February 28, 2014

Bought this amp for a kicker l7 15 after my zx750 burnt out. wired it to 1ohm and it slams. It is a little more power hungry than the kicker amp but it is putting out another 400 watts. Leds look awesome at night as well. Have had it for a little over a month and would definitely recommend at this point.

Very good bang for your buck

January 23, 2014

This is a bit of a long review but I know what i wanna read about products so that is what I am going to say in this review. I have this amp in my car pushing two Kenwood KFC-W3013PS subwoofers wired at 2ohms in a dual vented enclosure and this amp is incredible. The subs are 400 watts rms each and 1,200 watts max each so the rms output at 2ohms with this amp was an exact match up. Let me say, this amp will push more than what it says.... i had them playing hard for only about 20 minutes and went to my trunk to see how hot the amp had gotten and it was ice cold. My subs however, were very warm and I could smell hot voice coil. DO NOT underestimate this amp. It is power hungry. I bought a 1.5 farad capacitor and it still dims my lights. I would recommend a 2 farad capacitor and a strong battery (mine is 900 cold cranking amps). The screws that come with the remote to mount it are weak. I twisted the head off of one of them. Everything about the amp is great though. The remote is nice to have as far as leveling sounds so nothing is over or under powering. The amp is built solid and looks very sharp. I highly recommend Hifonics mono-block amps. Very precise, stays cool, smooth frequency transition, very accurate with double bass drums, and hits harder than the Kenwood or Pioneer amps I had on these same subs with similar power ratings.

Great Amplifier for a Great Price

January 13, 2014

After hearing nothing but great things about the BRX line from Hifonics I knew I had to get one. To start, the amplifier has a very solid build and excellent styling, the blue LED's look really cool no matter where you mount your amplifier. Plus, it has all the features you could possibly need. Did i mention this amplifier has some serious power? IT DOES. I wouldn't be surprised if it's way underrated by power standards and it might even be relatively stable down into the 0.5-0.75 ohm range. The price is insanely low for how solid, powerful, and good looking this amp is and most cars could power this amp without any expensive electrical upgrades. So take my word and order one ...or four.

November 10, 2014

Wow this amp is definitely a powerhouse ran at 1 ohm I bought it to run an old set of pioneer 500 rms 12's that needed dusted off and now I think I'm going to have to upgrade subs because they handle it but not very well they probably won't last long on it. If you are having trouble deciding just buy it you won't regret it read the other reviews you'll see.

Amazing Power AND Sound Quality

January 7, 2014

This amp blew me away. My previous amp was rated at 1200 watts and this amp at 1100 performed better in every way possible. I prefer sound quality over sheer loudness but boy this amp gave me both! My 2 12s are now playing much cleaner and louder. Oh yea and you can't beat the look of this amp either. All the blue lighting makes it look so awesome.

Great Amp, Great Price

September 17, 2013

Bought this amp to push a Rockford T1D215. Can't even put the sub level on the stereo past -1... This amp drives that sub hard. Even with the big 3 upgrade it dims the lights, and we're running 0 gauge. I couldn't imagine trying anything bigger, the car is dynamatted and still shakes like crazy. I recommend this amp to anyone looking for high power at a decent price.

Well after much thought I choose this amp. I previously had a hifonics hifi 1000.1. Which was not cea compliant. The amp was good but did overheat often. So since hifonics has good value and I know their higher lines of amps are great I went with the brx line. I have no complaints about this amp. It pairs perfectly with my 2 kicker cvr 10's at 2ohms for 800
Watts rms. the sound is clean and I have had no problems with distortion
I cannot say enough good things about this amp

April 10, 2014

This was the amp I chose to power my RE audio se 15". Makes the woofer sound much better than the Rockford p600.1bd I had. Of coarse the Rockford was seven years old, so it was time to upgrade anyway. I got this one on sale for $151 and change from this site. Definitely recommend for 4 or 2 ohm applications. Don't know about using it for 1 ohm apps. because max power wire input is only 4 guage. 1100 watts is a lot for 4 guage if you run a somewhat lengthy wire. Short runs would probably work just fine if using FULL SPEC OFC!!! Very happy with product.

Couldn't be happier :)

February 15, 2014

I bought this amp and a new wiring kit to start over on my previously horribly installed system by some shop I will not go to again. I decided to do it myself this time and do a neat and good installment. I have the Hifonics amp hooked up to one jl 12'' at 500 rms and it is more than enough for me. This amp has the ability for tuning to your liking. I hate the thumps that crappy amps give you. If you want smooth flowing bass that isn't harsh to your ears, pick this amp paired with a good sub. You won't be disappointed. The glow is a nice touch as well. First Hifonics amp I've owned too.

Great Amp

November 17, 2013

I have had this amp for around 4 months now powering a 12in type r at 800rms 2ohm and it bumps pretty hard. I love how the amp lights up but since mine is in the trunk I don't see the illumination at all. It was quite easy to set up and install. I would strongly recommend this amp.

November 13, 2013

Got this baby running at 4 ohms on a DD 512 and its flexing my wagon. I heard some people crap on Hifonics but most of them had never even owned one. I've been into the car audio for over 15 years now and this is a great amp. It doesnt even get warm at 4 ohms and the angled terminals were not a problem. Cant wait until i get me 2 dvc 12s so i can really release some power out of this amp because it has plenty. I just recommend a deep cycle battery and a big 3 maybe 2 batteries because this amp is going to do rated maybe a little more if properly feed. Big ups to Hifonics BRX line and Sonic $170 shipped to my door in 3 days. And West, thanks dude!!! Great customer service!!!

Amp!

September 19, 2013

I have this amp matched with 2 12" Rockford Fosgate dvc punch in a sealed box. The bass is clean, tight, and POWERFULL!!!
I find myself backing the adjustable gain down to about 75% of max after tuning the amp. Along with the rest of my setup, Pioneer head, Pioneer rear deck 6X9's, Morel Maximo components front stage, and 2 aftermarket cheap tweets on the A pillars, I can go from Florence and the machine to Megadeath to Beastie Boys with zero adjustments.
Amp is well worth the investment.

this amplifier is a beast I would recommend it because it doesn't heat up like most amplifiers and the led light glows nice in the dark. it will power your subwoofers to the max but not too much otherwise it can blow your subwoofers.

Initially I purchased this amp to pair with my 2 JL w3's rated @ 500 rms each. I had for about 6 months now been underpowering the JL's giving them only 200 1st in a compact custom sealed box underneath my bench seat & then vented box on top both sounded good enough. I now since have this Brutus wired @ a 2 ohm load in my vented box & my JL's sound incredible twice as loud & low. I also recent got of hold of a pair of Kicker cwr 10's rated @ 600 a piece witch Sonic's AmpFinder guide is the # 3 match for them I discovered afterwards. I had them hooked up to the Brutus @ a 1ohm load maxing out this amp I will take my poor guess that it is putting more than the stated 1100 @1 So I had the quick luxury of running this amp in 2 of 3 loads output. The underglow effect of the illumination is a very solid bonus when amp is place just right . So thumbs up from me.

December 19, 2013

I've got it on one type r 12 wired down to 2 ohms 800rms or so, it pushes what they say it does. Beats hard for one 12, and its in a cheap pre fab from best buy. Amp looks really clean at night, it is power hungry so prepare some light dimming. All in all for the price you can't lose don't let those big name amps fool you this one is just as good if not better. Oh yeah over an hour of play with gain maxed out and about half way on boost it barely gets warm. BUY IT... sonic is one of the best car audio sites out there, you pay they ship easy pain free process.

pretty good amp

December 1, 2013

good amp, got what I expected probably should have gotten one a little more powerful, have the re 15 inch 2 ohm 1100 watt rms sub. seems like it drives it pretty well but probably should've gone one model up on the amp. not sure if the factory rated 1100w rms is really that accurate, could be because I'm going one ohm stable though, not sure. all in all good good bang for your buck though. have had 3 amps from hifonics and all have held up well and produced sufficient power.

Nice little amp for the money. I have it running two alpine type s at one ohm and it sounds good being set with a multimeter. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for decent bass on a budget. My only complaints would be the down turned speaker terminals and the plastic mounting brackets but that's most amps anyway so great amp all in all.

Good amp so far

January 23, 2014

I purchased this amp about 1 month ago. It arrived with in a week and the got it hooked up to my sa 15. So far seems like a nice amp, especially for the price, I have it wired to 2 ohm so pushing 800 rms. if I could so things over is probly get a little more powerful because the sa15 can take more I think, but it still hits pretty hard, and sundown is known for being underated with what it can take. If anything changes in the next get months of use I'll update. Sonic has been great to work with and definetly recommend buying from here.

Awesome amp!

November 21, 2013

I'm coming from a Kenwood KAC-9105D amp... and I must say this one has many improvements. My Kenwood ran super hot and was very inefficient, dimmed my lights and stressed my electrical very bad. This Hifonics puts out more power and also runs MUCH more efficiently and doesn't dim my lights until I crank it up to crazy levels. Barely warm to the touch even after hours of hard play. I hear that the BRX models are Hifonics finest, and I believe it. Once I upgrade my vehicles electrical I might upgrade to the BRX2400.1D, or if funds allow it... go to something even better!

Will this amp work for two Kicker 12 cvrs? If so can i also run this amp with my door speakers and 6x9's?
A shopper on Mar 1, 2015
Best Answer: This amp will work for your kicker's. I'm not sure about the second part of the question tho. Are you talking about hooking BOTH your subs AND your door speakers? If so then you will NOT be able to do that because the kickers equal the exact RMS of the amp. Plus its never a good idea to have both door speakers and sub woofers on the same amp

can i use this on two subwoofers?
James H on Feb 11, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

Yes. In theory, you can use this on 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc....subwoofers. The number of subwoofers isn't the important determining factor, its the configuration & final impedance of the subwoofers and how that compares to the amplifier's ratings. We suggest providing us a Proper Model number of the "two subwoofers" you are considering, so we can establish a better answer for you.

What guage wirewould be best for this?
A shopper on Jan 14, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

As you will see, the consensus will for 4-Gauge with a few using 0-Gauge. We HIGHLY recommend OFC 4-Guage wiring, to get the draw the amp requires. However, many of our customers instead go with 0-Guage with the Stinger SPT521 (two for Power/Ground) to get the Best performance.

Has anyone ran this amp at 1 ohm and if so any overheating? Did it handle being ran at 1 ohm?
jeff S on Sep 30, 2014
Best Answer: Hey jeff
the amp doesn't overheat or get hot ever. I've ran it at 4 ohm 2 ohm and 1 ohm impedance. I have nvx true 4 gauge power and ground optima deep cycle yellow top and it runs great at 2 and 4 but 1 it draws a lot of power. I recommend 2 ohm operation. Im just running 2 kicker 12s@ 4 ohms and I have flex on my whole car. Amp never gets hot its a kick ass amp for the price

is the bass remote that comes with this amp, a BASS BOOST remote? or a remote GAIN knob, and how does it work. Basically do I set the gains on the amp first, then plug the remote in and set it to max?
ant222 on Aug 21, 2014
Best Answer: Hey man just to help you the bass knob is basically for cops if your disturbing the peace. This amp is great for 2 ohm operation I'm pushing 2 kicker cvrs. You set the gain on the amp. The knob is simply a way to turn your amp on and off. All the way down, 3/4 up, all the way up how you set it. Get it? If not reply or if it helps let me know.

I heard the class D have more distortion than A/B, Is that make sense?
Steve on Feb 25, 2015
Best Answer: I don't have experience with class A/B, but I have not had any distortion with this amo at all. Class A/B amps usually do have a cleaner sound, but don't give you as much power or bass as class Ds.

is this amp good enough for my rockford fosgate p3 shallow mounts? i have 2 12s 4 ohm each
alejandro t on Feb 11, 2015
Best Answer: I got 2 15" rockford's with 600 rms, and this amp kicks tail! One hell of a buy! Clear sound, great power and punch! Works hard and rarely shuts off...if ever. A definite say buy! But this amp shoots out 1100 watts so that has to balance closely to your rms power, because if the amp is to small you could blow the speakers/subs. There is always the option of turning the gain down but try to match the power output from the amp to the rms of the speaker.

Ex. 2 twelve inch subs with 500 rms each equals 1000 rms so to speak, so thats a fairly good match!

Would this amp be way under powering them? The r's say they can handle 300-1000 rms and they would be at about 550 rms give or take at 1 ohm.I just don't want to mess up two new subs.

Hifonics BRX1100.1D
Alpine SWR-12D4-OB
Alpine SWR-12D4-OB
Best Answer: Hell Steven,

You answered your own question within your question.

The SWR-12D4 is asking for power within 300-1000w RMS. The BRX1100.1D will provide ~550w RMS to each driver, which is well within the 300-1000w RMS. This means it will work, and will not harm your subwoofers.

On the contrary, the plan of putting the BRX2000 may very well harm your drivers. Just because Alpine says the subwoofer can handle up to 1k , doesn't mean you should. That is the equivalent of Red Lining your vehicle at all times Just because it can....disastrous right?

Like previous models, the magic number is 750w RMS , that the SWR are happy at. This means you may want to consider the Hifonics X1500.1D instead.

This is not to say that we completely discourage you going with the 2k; However, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you are providing the amp the cleanest signal possible, and - obviously - be responsible. We also would hate for you to 'mess up two new subs', especially sense blown subs are not covered under warranty. Plan accordingly.
