The Gods have struck again from Mt. Olympus. The famous Brutus amplifier has gone through a redesign and now features a new look along with amazing sound. The design for the new Brutus BRX amplifiers has a blue illuminated underglow that gives the amplifier a floating appearance when properly mounted.

The molded and angled illuminated terminals add to the stylish design and also provide stress-free installation access. Accu-Cross crossovers allow for adjustments and sound shaping. All single-channel monoblock amplifiers from the Brutus BRX amplifiers feature NGSD Next Generation Super-D Class. This NGSD digital chip design in the amplifiers has been tweaked to provide an extremely efficient, low temperature, high amplification system.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
Brutus (Hifonics)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

Allows you to block (filter) ultra-low frequencies that your subs cannot reproduce.

Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.

Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.

Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.

All I can say is wow this amp has got some balls. (Hopefully that is acceptable) This is by far the best amp I have ever had. It does not get hot and the clarity is really sweet. Not to mention it is loud as he'll. The lights on this amp look killer to say the least. It has it all. No cons just pure joy. This amp isn't quite creating its rated power. (1473 RMS on a 1 ohm load with a 14.7V input), HOWEVER, 1500 watts for $189 is very tough to beat. The guts of this amp look rock solid. After 20 hours of hard use it has yet to overheat. One thing I did notice, the amp is VERY efficient. I don't run a dual alternator set up, just a single 300 amp alternator, and this amp isn't sucking juice like most amps its size. I think its efficiency is actually a little higher than the manufacturer states in the product literature. Only negatives I noticed were the dinky control knobs from 1983 that you need a small screwdriver to adjust. Real knobs would have been nice.

Well when i initially received the amp it did not work no matter what i tried. so i called sonic electronix and they promptly let me return the amp and they sent me a new one with little to no hassle. I now have the amp pushing a alpine type r 15 at 2 ohms and it is perfect. The amp looks awesome at night and doesn't struggle at all like my last amp.
Overall good purchase and good buying experience with sonic electronix

Amazing amplifier for the price!

I recently bought this amplifier and paired it with a Kenwood KFC-W3013PS. This 12" sub is being fed 600 watts rms @ 4 ohms and let me tell you, those 600 watts have been the loudest and cleanest I've heard in a while.
This amp features a sub-sonic crossover, as well as a low pass crossover; with the crossovers and gains set right, the bass is incredibly clean and loud, even when it's coming from a 12" sub!
As long as you set the crossovers and gains right, this amp will deliver a clean output all the time! Another cool feature is that the Hifonics badge on the amp illuminates blue and the top and bottom of the heat sink also illuminates blue; it looks great at night.
Keep in mind that this amp is power hungry so don't play your music too long with the engine off or else your battery will drain!

this is 2006 CEA compliant. It puts out what it says on the box. Might need to upgrade your battery to handle this amp. this is a beast and if you add a dry cell its amazing

Best Amp I Have Ever Owned Next 2 A Soundstream Rubicon. Even Tho The Soundstream had jus a slight sq over the Hifonics. It's still the best bang for your buck. As far as amplifiers go, I'm sticking with Hifonics. Played hard for 2 Hours straight and barely got warm, not to mention I have 2 Soundstream RW-12s rated at 600rms a piece wired to 1 ohm with the gain closely set to 2volts with the bass eq turned half way up.

Just got this amp and hooked it up to my 2 rockford fosgates p2d4-12's. They are 800rms and 1600 watt peak, and this amp pushes them great! Have the amp up about half way and it works just fine! Never gets that hot either which is another great thing. The build quality of this amp is very good. It's solid and has some weight and size to it! It lights up all blue too which is cool also for a look factor. Over all this amp is a great buy for the price. I would recommend this amp for sure to anyone with power ratting that my subs push.

Have this amp on 1 kicker 12" l7. Have had kicker, mem 1000.1. Other hifonics . This amp is worth all the money and more. Doesnt get hot and has great control over everything. Plus led light is a nice add on.

I've been running this at 1 ohm for a few months now, with no issues. It seemed a bit light when I originally un-packaged it, but my concerns have vanished after my success with it. Definitely a good buy for the price. The lighting is actually kind of cool around the edges and face.

BEAST AMP!!

I've had this amp for a few months now and let me tell you. Once I upgraded my electrical system the power started showing up. Sitting at 14.4v at .5 ohms, this thing pounds. Had it powering 2 12inch CVRS but decided to upgrade and run 6 12s off this beast at .63 ohms. Plan on getting another one soon!

Got this hooked up to a 1200 rms mofo and it has the speaker maxed with not even a hint of heat. One thing is that I have 4 gauge wire with a 3 frg cap and the 40 amp still not enough for the amp to push at its max. Go 1/0 with this bad boy if you want to tap into that 1600 rms

I have this running one type R 12 at 2ohms. It works great. But the only bad thing I noticed was that the bass knob was not allowing the amp to fully power my sub. It was shorting it. It was weird, never seen that before. So now I have no use for the knob. I can just adjust my settings through my alpine deck. I would buy this beastly amp again.
