JL Audio W6v3 Series Subwoofer Driver

JL Audio W6v3 Series Subwoofer Driver

JL Audio gave birth to the W6 series in 1993, since becoming the best selling Subwoofer Driver in their entire artillery. The latest generation, the v3, stays true to what embodies the W6 pedigree. Built along side JL Audio's flagship W7AE, the W6v3 Series shares many patented groundbreaking technologies found in its ultra-performance bigger brother. In addition to these technologies, the W6v3's also incorporate a patented cooling structure that efficiently channels air around the voice cold to further improve handling and its JL Audio fidelity. The suspension design features a rubber surround for enhanced durability and a large-diameter, progressive roll spider to provide linear compliance over the woofer’s excursion range. The cones are injection-molded, mineral-filled polypropylene and incorporate a silver accent ring that creates a classy new look in combination with the satin black cast alloy basket.

Although the W6v3 Subwoofer can be driven with as little as 200 Watts, for best audio performance it is recommended to run an amplifier capable of between 400 - 600 Watts of continuous power per driver, like the JL Audio XD600/1v2 or JL Audio 600/1v3. In addition, these subwoofers are optimized to operate in either a ported or sealed enclosure, needing only 1 cubic feet of air space in a sealed box and 1.30 cubic feet in a ported/vented enclosure. (Specific dimensions and figures can be found in the user manual, linked further below.)

Like its W7AE brethren, all W6v3 subwoofers are built with extreme precision in JL Audio's Miramar, Florida factory, with extreme prejudice to craftsmanship and overall build quality. Its this attention to detail that delivers the JL Audio quality and performance we have all become accustomed to.

JL Audio Patented Cooling Technology

JL Audio Patented Cooling Technology

The bullet-shaped structure inside the pole-vent, located directly in the center of the magnet structure, directs airflow and increases air velocity to effectively reduce voice coil temperature, leading to improved fidelity and reliability. Moreover, JL Audio's patented Elevated Frame Cooling design delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression. To put it simply, the harder the W6v3 works, the more air its moving to keep itself cool.

Extraordinary Linearity and Control

Extraordinary Linearity and Control

DMA is JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system and is aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W7AE motors remain linear in motor force over an extreme range of excursion and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass. Its main catalyst is the driver's Ultra-long Voice Coil, that allows extreme linear excursion, phenomenal power handling and control, control, control.

Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
W6v3 (JL Audio)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
12"
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
600 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
20 - 200 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
85.4 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
19 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Black
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Mineral-Filled Polypropylene
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Butyl Rubber
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
No

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Optimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.00 cubic feet
Optimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.30 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
7.52"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
11.02"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

No

Electromechanical Parameters

Free-Air Resonance (Fs)
The free-air resonance frequency of the subwoofer, measured in Hz. At this frequency the weight of the moving parts is perfectly balanced with the subwoofers suspension system.
26.919 Hz
Equivalent Compliance (Vas)
This is the amount of air that has the same stiffness as the subwoofers suspension. The greater the rating, the lower the stiffness and larger recommended enclosure. It is measured in Liters.
1.920 liters
Total Speaker Q Value (Qts)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including all dimensionless losses. Essentially, a high Qts value (closer to 1.0) means the subwoofer is great for sealed enclosures and a low Qts value (closer to 0) means the woofer is great in vented enclosures. A Qts of around 0.45 means the woofer will work decently in either enclosure type.
0.463
Electrical Q Value (Qes)
The subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including electrical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. The unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.
0.487
Electrical Resistance of Voice Coil (Re)
Amount of DC resistance of the subwoofer when measured with an ohm meter. Typically, this will read less than the impedance rating of the subwoofer.
6.493 ohms
Mechanical Q Value (Qms)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including mechanical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. This unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.

These subs are amazing. I could finish the review there. I used to run two Kicker CVRs (as a first pair) but was sold on a pair of W6s after a demo by an audio retailer. I am running these with a Rockford T-1000 in a ported box, and stock radio (waiting for an interface kit on backorder), and these subs are monsters. I have to warn people before they sit in the backseat of my car (2014 Elantra) because these things HIT. You would think they were in the cab with you, and the SQ is unbelievably clean. I have friends with L7 SoloBarics, and while they might get louder, it sounds clangy and choppy. They are envious of how clean these W6s hit compared to the SoloBarics. Sure, they are a bit pricey, but any audiophile would be proud to own subs that sound like this. The only downside really is that when I run them at over +9 db, they shake the mirror and the sunglasses holder in my car loose. I really look forward to hearing them with the Excelon touchscreen that's going in. I'd like to hear the highs a bit more, but I'll probably have to tune the inside speakers for that.

12W6. High Price, High Quality

April 22, 2014

I have owned this subwoofer for 6 years now and it is still going. I'm very impressed since I have ran it on many 12 hour long trips. I feel that I abuse this thing. Hours of Dubstep and how my brother in-law puts it, "Speaker murder." I am running it off a JL 500/1v2 at 2ohms and it is placed in a ported box with 1.5cubic feet tuned to 31hrz just as recommended.

I was surprised that it hits the high notes pretty good and destroys your chest with the low notes. Many people look for LOUD woofers and think that is 'good bass' or 'sound' quality. This sub is loud but it is so impressively clearly! I love when people tell me there subs are louder. Yea maybe 5-10db, but I hear their's bottoming out and distortion filled.

The excursion really helps keep this thing cool and the quality build is meant to last. It is a lot of money up front for one sub but over the coarse of 6 years, not so bad. I would definitely purchase again IF I could afford the money upfront at that point in time. As of now, I'm 6 years in and its still experiencing 'speaker murder' by my favorite DJs.

ps: I know 12's can get a little slopping and can get behind on notes. I was shocked to hear this thing punch 16th note bass sequences. Every note clear and precise. Amazing.

Running: 5001v2 on 1 12w6v2, 400/4v2 on c2650s with Clean Sweep sound processor.

Pros: Amazing sound quality through the full range. Quality build. Made in U.S.A. You only need one.

Cons: Box size (if your worried about cargo space), Upfront price, your fiancé will think its to loud, and hearing loss.

Worth Every Penny!!

This sub is really expensive so it might turn a lot of people away. But for those looking for high quality stuff that isnt going to crap out once you turn your volume up, jl is the way to go. In terms of performance this sub gets really loud in the custom ported box i have for it. it sounds like two 13 w1's in a sealed box loud wise. it carries farther so it seems louder and it reproduces notes on a level on its own. the lows are as deep and as clear as you're gonna get and it hits every note subs are supposed to. my subs take a toll because i use them for every day use and i like my music to pound. i have this sub wired at eight ohms hooked to a rockford 1000 bdcp with the gain at five and it takes it like a champ and performs like the hype says it should.

Best Answer: Hello Vinny,

First, for the most part the settings are Not going to give you better "sound quality and hard hitting" output. Most of the settings are intended to set specific crossover points (to match your setup and the driver) , while the Level/Sensitivity is intended to match the sensitivity of your headunit. However, the 5001 does have a unique Single Band EQ, which will effect the output of a SPECIFIC Frequency by BOOSTING said frequency. If you are using an External EQ then we don't suggest setting this feature. If you do not have an External EQ, then we suggest starting at 60Hz, "Q" at 1.6, and the Boost at what YOU feel sounds the best; Be aware, boosting TOO high can be dangerous. In regards to the rest of the settings, they are traditional Crossovers, so set them accordingly and to match the rest of the setup.
