JL Audio TW3 Series Subwoofer Driver

JL Audio TW3 (Thin-Line) Series Subwoofer Driver

TW3 drivers have a power handling of up to 400 watts RMS and are capable of MORE excursion than their famous cousin, the full sized W3v3. Do not let their small size fool you, as they share many core technologies with its TW5 big brother. To allow this remarkable feat to be achieved, JL Audio’s patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the TW3’s using a "concentric tube" structure built into the injection-molded cone body. This structure supports the voice coil and a full annular spider, while permitting the placement of the large motor structure further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs. Due to their extraordinary performance, JL Audio uses the TW3 drivers in many of their premium PowerWedge enclosures, and vehicle specific Stealthboxes.

Although the TW3 Subwoofer can be driven with as little as 200 Watts, for best audio performance it is recommended to run an amplifier capable of between 300 - 400 Watts of continuous power per driver, like the JL Audio XD300/1v2. In addition, these subwoofers are optimized to operate in either a ported or sealed enclosure, needing only 0.50 cubic feet of air space in a sealed box and 0.60 cubic feet in a ported/vented enclosure. (Specific dimensions and figures can be found in the user manual, linked further below.)

When JL Audio sets out to make a product that sets the bar in its given field, they decide to built that product here at home, in the US at their Miramar, Florida factory. The TW3 driver is one of those products, and it shows in the amazing craftsmanship. Its this attention to detail that delivers the JL Audio quality and performance we have all become accustomed to.

Concentric Tube Suspension

Concentric Tube Suspension

JL Audio's patented solution to overcome the lack of mechanical clearance, presented by "low profile subwoofers", employs a molded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large diameter voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps place the motor system higher up into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting excellent mechanical excursion.

Extraordinary Linearity and Control

Extraordinary Linearity and Control

DMA is JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system and is aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, TW3 motors remain linear in motor force over an extreme range of excursion and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass. Its main catalyst is the driver's Ultra-long Voice Coil, that allows extreme linear excursion, phenomenal power handling and control, control, control.

Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
TW3 (JL Audio)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
400 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
30 - 250 Hz
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.
Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
82.10 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
15.2 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Polymer/Mica Composite
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Butyl Rubber
Magnet Structure
Defines the overall structure of the subwoofers magnet.
Double Stacked
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Optimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
0.50 cubic feet
Optimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the ideal ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
0.60 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

Electromechanical Parameters

Free-Air Resonance (Fs)
The free-air resonance frequency of the subwoofer, measured in Hz. At this frequency the weight of the moving parts is perfectly balanced with the subwoofers suspension system.
32.30 Hz
Equivalent Compliance (Vas)
This is the amount of air that has the same stiffness as the subwoofers suspension. The greater the rating, the lower the stiffness and larger recommended enclosure. It is measured in Liters.
19.82 liters
Total Speaker Q Value (Qts)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including all dimensionless losses. Essentially, a high Qts value (closer to 1.0) means the subwoofer is great for sealed enclosures and a low Qts value (closer to 0) means the woofer is great in vented enclosures. A Qts of around 0.45 means the woofer will work decently in either enclosure type.
Electrical Q Value (Qes)
The subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including electrical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. The unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.
Mechanical Q Value (Qms)
This is the subwoofers relative damping (Q) at the resonance frequency (Fs), including mechanical losses. Also called the mechanical damping of the subwoofer. This unitless measurement usually varies from 0.5 – 10.

Perfect size for my 2011 F150

February 10, 2014

This was my first subwoofer purchase/install. I did a lot of research and JL comes highly recommended. In my F150 Super Cab there is just not much room for anything. I knew I needed a compact subwoofer. I was a little concerned about the performance. No need to be. Coupled with the NVX MPA1 amp, it provides more than enough bass. I'd guess I'm using only about 3/4 or less ofits capacity. The amp doesn't even get warm and it shapes the mirrors.

Everything you have read about this subwoofer is true.

March 7, 2014

I bought this because there is not much room under the back seat in my 2011 F-150. I had read that the sound quality was really good even though it is a compact design. I used a 300W monoblock amplifier from NVX (MVPA1) mounted under my dash then ran 10ga wires to the woofer, mounted in a Zenclosure box made for this woofer. The box dimensions are exactly what is on the JL website. WOW. It sounds really great. The box is a little large to fit under the seat so I'm building my own. I can't wait to get it finished.

Excellent reviews haven't heard anything negative. Plus the small size is ideal for 2 door sports car. Placement in the trunk won't take up majority of the space in it.

I have a few questions regarding amps, enclosure and these subs so Ill put them all in one spot, here seems as good as any place lol

Currently in my 04 F150 super crew I have JL C5 components in the front, C3's in the back and a MTX shallow mount 10" sub powered by a Phoenix Gold Roadster 66 5 channel amp. The amp has been amazing, I love it, but, its a surf board and as you know, space is at a premium in those trucks. I want to add a second sub (I have a JL 10TW3 already and I plan to get another so I can replace the one MTX with the 2 JL's). That means the PG amp has to be repurposed for another application and I plan to replace it with a JL HD 900/5.

Will the HD 900/5 be enough to run 2 C5's, 2 C3's and the 2 10TW3's? To put it in more simple terms, my one MTX is enough to put a smile on her face, I need enough power to allow these 2 JL's to finish the job. Ya dig? lol

Next question, Im also looking at Atrend 372 boxes for the 2 10's. I really like the fiberglass box but since the JL's require a slightly larger diameter (9 5/8's vs the pre cut 9 1/8's) hole, Im not sure I wanna mess with cutting the fiberglass myself. Any suggestions?

Best Answer: Hello Andrew,

-Will the HD 900/5 be enough to run 2 C5's, 2 C3's and the 2 10TW3's?

Yes. All C5 and C3 speaker systems have high sensitivity and are able to be driven with as little as 25w RMS, all the way up to ~150w, but are only asking for ~75w. The HD900/5 is able to provide, at 4 ohms, 100 watts x 4 chan. making it a perfect match. The subwoofers would have to wired in series/parallel, getting 500w RMS from the amplifier, which then means ~250w RMS to each driver. The Recommended Power Range for the TW3 is 200 - 400 watts, so clearly we're in the clear there. We don't know what "MTX shallow mount 10" " you are referring to , or how its installed, or how its wired, etc... but best case scenario its getting the Phoenix Gold's 650W RMS x 1 @ 2 ohms rating. Clearly the JL setup will be slightly lower in power than that, but that's assuming we're running at full Tilt. Two drivers means more displacement, so there is no concern there.

-Enclosure Question

There is no way around having to cut the enclosure. We suggest consulting an installer for that.

Under your description you say "these subwoofers are optimized to operate in either a ported or sealed enclosure, needing only 0.80 cubic feet of air space in a sealed box and 0.95 cubic feet in a ported/vented enclosure". But under Features & Specs the recommended enclosure type states "Sealed". Could you shed some light on this discrepancy?
A shopper on May 8, 2016
Best Answer: The specs from JL are .5/.6 sealed/ported.

I had mine in a sealed .5 cu.ft. box, but built a new ported .7 cu.ft. box. Many people suggest .7 for a ported box and from experience I say it's the way to go. It's very loud and clear and my box is only 4.75" thick.

Lots of info about these subs on the JL website.

I have a Kicker ZX500.1 which is 500w @ 2 ohms and 250w @ 4 ohms. It seems that wiring the 10TW3-D4 sub with this amp will either under or overpower it. Can it be done or do you recommend a new amplifier at, for example, 300-400w @ 4 ohm?
A shopper on Aug 5, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

If we were to do the install, we could make the setup work with your ZX500.1; point being, it is possible. However, the important variables - that are out of Our control and cause for caution - is the install and the user. In theory the amplifier will do > ~500w wide open, but we doubt your're going to be doing that, but if you are then the User part of this is already screaming 'new amp'. With that said, with a proper install, signal and tune the amplifier can be set up in such a way where it won't put out its full potential output. If you are not familiar with tuning an amp, we suggest consulting an installer.

Will a set of 2 of these subwoofers work well with a JL XD600/6 Amp?
James T on Jun 28, 2015
Best Answer: Hello James,

The XD600/6 can drive the TW3, but as mentioned before it will be underpowering them. That isn't a "bad" thing, as the drivers are designed to be used that way as well, but you won't get the full performance they are capable of .

will it work in MTX ThunderForm Ford EXPLORER SPORT TRAC Custom Box?
A shopper on Mar 24, 2016
Best Answer: Of course.
Custom means building it to specifications. Your specs are going to be; matching a correct amp, wiring in proper ohms, and building the box with correct spacing (vehicle and sub tuned volume).

JL Audio SB-T-TACDC1210TW3
Best Answer: Hello,

You aren't incorrect, but you are reading it wrong. The 10TW3-D4 page doesn't say "400w RMS @ 4 ohms" . You may be referring to "Impedance: Dual 4-Ohm", which is VERY unlike "4ohms" , they are NOT the same. A Dual-4ohm driver can be wired in parallel to a 2ohm load, which is why the JL Audio SB-T-TACDC12/10TW3 says "Wired to a 2 ohm load". So, to answer your question, its both. =]

(Note: If, in fact, somewhere on the page it does say '400w RMS @ 2 ohms.' , please point out exactly where so we can make the fix.)
