Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

RMS Power @ 4 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

50 watts x 4 channels
RMS Power @ 2 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 2 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

100 watts x 4 channels
Bridged RMS Power

Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the RMS power created once an amplifier is bridged.

175 watts x 2 channels

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
MVP (NVX)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
4
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

400 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
8 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
4 ohms
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
<0.07%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
No
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
High-pass (HP)
High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

40 - 400 Hz
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

40 - 400 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
101 dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
No
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
30A x 1
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.
No
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Sonic Certified Amplifier
Sonic Certified amplifiers have been tested by the experts at Sonic Electronix to meet or exceed the wattage ratings provided by the manufacturer. If this is marked as Yes, then you can trust the wattage ratings. If marked as No, then we have tested the amplifier and it did not meet the advertised wattage ratings. If marked as Not Tested, then the Sonic Electronix experts have not yet been able to test the amp.

hard little hitter

January 12, 2015

I bought this because of the size and specs, its pretty easy to in stall.
The amp was for a motorcycle, hooked it up to two 6x9 5way pioneer speakers and it sounds great.
Pros: good amp, love the performance
Cons: length and width were fine but just a little thicker than anticipated. Wouldn't fit under my shield so I had to put it in my saddle bag

Impressive performer

February 14, 2015

I bought this amplifier to use in an audio upgrade for my Honda Gold Wing F6B. I used the front 2 channels to power a set of the Polk Audio MM series 5.25" component speakers and I bridged the rear channels to power a single JL Audio 6.5" Micro Sub. I had read the reviews and watched the Youtube videos and decided to give it a try. Looking at the performance specs., I was sure it should do the job. I was for sure interested in the piece for the small size and lack of space it would require to install. I have previously used a Kenwood Excelon XR400-4 on another of my bikes and was very happy with it. I was hopeful that I would not be disappointed with this unit. Long story short, it works very well and provides plenty of power in my application. I would highly recommend it to someone and I have. Because of my recommendation, at least two others have purchased this amp. Very strong performer. I can't really give a true evaluation of durability as it has only been a month or so.

Great little amp!

August 18, 2014

I just hooked this amp up on my motorcycle after my Kenwood KAC-1502S amp finally stopped working (after 3 years in a saddlebag). I have (2) 5.25" JL Audio speakers up on my bars in a PVC tube enclosure. Let's just say that this amp rocks those speakers! You can spend your $700 - $1000 on those Hawg Wired/J & M Rokker amps/speakers (Harley guys!). For a fraction of the cost, my setup sounds better (IMHO). Going to buy another one to do the same on a bicycle (will add 2 more speakers). I will be the 'entertainment' portion of the bike trail/stops along the way. For, this setup gets insanely loud, and still sounds crisp/clean. So far, the amp just gets warm to the touch (even in a saddlebag). The PVC tube speakers may not be the 'cleanest/most aesthetic looking' as chrome bullet speakers, but they sound way better. I painted them a satin black. They look just fine. And, sound even better!!!!

Powerful for its size

March 17, 2015

I upgraded my H D Electra Glide Classic with an amp and four speakers. The installation went smoothly as this was my first time and the instructions were easy to follow. The only problem I had was the adjustment screw on the far right was stripped and blew out my speakers. I installed a second set of speakers and attempted to make an adjustment by turning the screw counter clockwise. The results were the same: blown speakers. The agent at Sonic suggested that I find a shop to repair it myself before returning . I'm not satisfied

Very good unit

May 15, 2014

This unit is one of the smallest amps with power and I am amazed on its performance. They did a great job on making an amp you can fit into tight places and have some speaker power. I installed this on my Harley Ultra Classic next to the CB module, it is that small. It is smaller and more powerful and half the cost of Hogtunes and J&M 360 amps which I had both. Hogtunes does have a nice design which has the by-pass to daisy chain another amp when using more the 4 speakers at 2 ohms which is nice maybe Sonic could add it in the future amps. Still very nice amp people! I would buy another one ..

It only worked for 30 minutes, then it would not turn on.

June 23, 2015

Hooked it to 50 Watts RMS Speakers @ 4 Ohms. It ran for about 30 minutes and then it would not turn on, I used the remote signal by the way. I'm returning it and requesting a refund from Sonic, I'll let you know how they respond.

Follow up on the MVPA4

June 9, 2015

I have since added a pair of NVX 6x9's to my leather saddlebag lids (to go along with some 5.25" speakers up on the bars). This amp makes those 4 speakers 'stupid loud'. I can hear them easily over the de-baffled straight pipes. Even going 80! Great, little amp. Doesn't get hot. Does what it says it will do. Recommended it to many others. I've had this amp on my Yamaha Roadstar for quite awhile now. And, it has NEVER failed me. Barely gets warm to the touch (never hot!).

Harley fairing upgrade

February 13, 2015

I bought this amp to power 2 Polk audio 6x9's in my aftermarket fairing. I ran it bridged and this amp puts out. From just the 2 speakers it it louder, clearer and has better low end than my baddies $3000 system on his bike.

When testing the amp it never got hot.

Only issue is that the power terminal is not quite bug enough for the recommend 10ga wire.

NVX MVPA4 A TWIST

September 4, 2014

I used this mini amp to boost the power on a 40 watt mono pa on o tour boat. I used it in the bridged configuration hitting it with the hot signal from the pa then into a barely 4 ohm load. Under a full load, music, for a couple hours it got pretty hot but did not shut down. Normaly the pa use is off and on so in that it could take the full load it will hang in there for the normal use. The size was great our space was limited. It was the only 12 volt amp I could find that could handle the hot signal so I could daisey chain it. The output binding block is kinda a pain, so small. Other wise thumbs up !!!

Great

July 27, 2014

Only upgrade to this amp would be the NVX JAD series or the JL audio HD400v2 Based on SN/ and THD, on my car with power seats this amp fits perfectly without getting in the way of me moving my seat back. Since the amp does get hot since its so ultra tiny under the seat is a good place. You wont be able to tell the sound quality apart unless you buy some really expensive speakers with high end tweeter. I got the P65c3 with Flac files from my phone and the Jl audio line booster I got my factory stereo to give out 8volts High input of power before distortion into the MVP4A , With the car on I got 12.4Volts out from the MVP4 with no speakers attached b4 distortion about 38watts, my load though is 3.5ohms so I get a little more than that wich is more than enough loudness .

you wont find another 100+SN amp at this price and this small - I cant wait for their next version .

Another great product from NVX.

February 10, 2014

I use this and the MVPA1 under the dash in my 2011 F150. I was apprehensive at first powering all 4 of my 2ohm door speakers. No reason to be. It works great. I also bought the NVX 8ga wiring kit. With the amps under the dash I had lots of wire left over. Be aware that it is difficult to get a 10ga connector on to the amp let alone an 8ga. I used one 8ga from the batt then split into 2 10ga for the amps.

Is this for real?

June 9, 2014

I ordered this amp as part of my NVX system. I am new to the brand and I was unsure of what to expect all around. This little amp has surprised both me and my installer alike. How can something so small produce so much power? It is simply incredible. The amp is so small I have it mounted under the passenger seat of my Mazda. My immediate concern was that the small size made it impossible to prevent overheating as there could not be much of a heat sink. After driving it hard for 4 straight hours I found it only warm to the touch. The finger melting heat I had expected did not materialize. I cannot say enough about this amp. I would not hesitate to recommend this to friends and family.

Amazing sound !

July 18, 2014

Will be installing this in our 2010 f150 behind the dash, to improve overall sound compared to factory headunit power. I set this amp up on my Testbench hooked up to oscilloscope and dd1 to the outputs with load resistors on all four channels to prove it's rated output and it was what nvx stated, all at 14.4 volts. Was slightly less at 13.6 volts but minimal. As far as sound quality goes I compared sound to my ppi art series a200, ppi 2030m ( both high quality old school amps) and honestly could not tell difference in sound ! And as far as size goes you could install this nvx amp almost anywhere. Actually have this running on my Bose home audio speakers which are 8 ohm , no problems ..

I upgraded my speakers to 6.5 too but I am still tweaking the sound quality. I wanted to use the bridge capability but I wasn't able to get that to work correctly as I have never installed an amp before.
I have a buddy who has lots of experience with sound systems and am hoping he can figure out what I'm doing wrong. But regardless, I was able to hook it up unbridged and it has plenty of power.

Has anyone actually used the Velcro that comes with the amp to mount the amplifier? It comes with it , but the manual does not really say anything about it. The manual actually does caution against mounting to a "vinyl" surface or similar due to heat.
james T on Jan 4, 2015
Best Answer: I have used the Velcro to mount the amp inside a plastic storage compartment on a Polaris RZR.
I had no problems with the amp overheating and the Velcro held it in place good.

If I bridge the two rear channels to run a single 4-ohm subwoofer, can the two front channels still run a pair of 2.7-ohm component speakers reliably? Thanks!

Best Answer: Hello Dave,

Generally speaking, we do not suggest attempting to do so. However, IF your amplifier has the ability to run properly with such a setup, then the user manual will imply it. Even with that said, for amplifiers that say they Can [e.g. Rockford Fosgate R600-4D] we typically still do not attempt it out of reassurance that we aren't stressing the amp. Nevertheless, check with your manual and/or the manufacture.

Will this amp cause a loss of AM/FM Reception?
Roger S on Dec 15, 2014
Best Answer: Didn't notice any difference with the reception of the radio after installing this unit. Running a Pioneer head with polk two ways up front, Pioneer 5 ways in back and a self powered 12 inch Rockford Fosgate sub.

to install this Amp in my 02 Harley Davidson Electraglide will I need an installation kit and do you recommend the wiring harness you offer? if so please advise which one and why?
Jerry C on Nov 28, 2014
Best Answer: I replaced an amp that was already on my bike. The harness was already in place. Basically all you need is a stranded 12 gauge wire running to the battery for the hot and the negative. 2 fork connectors to connect them to the battery. Inline fuse block for the positive. Which I'd Mount by the battery for easy fuse replacement .a 16 gauge wire running from the switched power to the cigarette lighter positive for switched power to the amp. And then bring your speaker wires from the radio into the amp
And from the amp into the speakers

? How many electrical amps does this amp draw ( normal and max ) thank you
A shopper on May 2, 2015
Best Answer: Sorry I'm not sure on that, but from other audio forums they clam a max of 30a from an amp dyno at 4ohms. But I wanted to let you know that this amp has been a very good amp for me. I am using the amp on a Kawasaki 1700 motorcycle running 4 component sets at 2ohms, basically using everything the amp can give me and I don't have any electrical issues. Very impressive for its size. I also don't have any issues with the amp getting hot and I have the amp mounted in the trunk not getting any moving air for long periods of time. Hope this helps.

On initial test and burn in the amp remote light came on then went green. Now on production install the remote end will not get off red indicator for the remote?
Theron S on Sep 14, 2014
Best Answer: This is weird! On mine when I first turn it on the light will go green and as long as it has music signal it stays green if I kill the music signal and it sits idle for a minute or two the light goes red until I turn the signal back on!

Trying to determine between PX100.2 (using 2 to accomplish 4 channel set up) and the NVX MVPA4 for use on a motorcycle. Any thoughts as to quality, reliability, function, etc. Planning on running Kicker PS5250 and either the 6.5 or 6x9 version as well. Any thoughts or suggestions from you who know and understand this equipment?

Best Answer: The nvx is a good powerful amp. I am running 4 six inch speakers and I get comments that it sounds like I have a subwoofer. I am going to put one in my boat with 4 speakers and a sub. I have never had any problems at all. Easy install. I have installed mine just by attaching it to top of radio.

Building a hot rod and want to use this amp to run an i-pod directly from the amp and not use a car stereo. Limited space would make this a perfect choice if I can use it as a stand alone?
mike w on Jan 16, 2015
Best Answer: I have an iPad installed in my car. I believe this is the perfect amp for your setup. You can use an iStreamer or other DCA to get RAC signal from your iPod and feed it into the amp as well as charging your iPod.

Has anyone noticed a difference when hooking this amp with the speaker level inputs compared to the line level inputs? I temporarily hooked my amp with the speaker level inputs from my Gold Wing F6B and was very disappointed. The amp is powering a new set of MM series Polk Audio component 5.25" speakers. I traded out the factory radio and just tried running my phone from the headphone jack into the RCA line level inputs and what a difference. I am going to pick up a low to high impedance adapter/converter tomorrow and see how that performs.
james T on Dec 25, 2014
Best Answer: When I first plugged it in, it wasn't loud at all. Turn the little screw on the very right to adjust. In the manual it's explains how to set the output level. Really easy. I guess it isn't set from the factory
