Power Specifications - Subwoofer Channel

RMS Power @ 4 ohms
The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far. If the final impedance of your speaker(s) or subwoofer(s) equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound. The 5th channel on these particular amplifiers are usually dedicated for driving subwoofers.
200 watts x 1 channels
RMS Power @ 2 ohms
The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far. If the final impedance of your speaker(s) or subwoofer(s) equals 2 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound. The 5th channel on these particular amplifiers are usually dedicated for driving subwoofers.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
MVP (NVX)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
1 - Mono
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

300 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
8 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
Not Bridgeable
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
0.65%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
No
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

40 - 400 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
105 dB
Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.
Selectable 0/+6dB/+12dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
No
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
15A x 2
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.
No
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Sonic Certified Amplifier
Sonic Certified amplifiers have been tested by the experts at Sonic Electronix to meet or exceed the wattage ratings provided by the manufacturer. If this is marked as Yes, then you can trust the wattage ratings. If marked as No, then we have tested the amplifier and it did not meet the advertised wattage ratings. If marked as Not Tested, then the Sonic Electronix experts have not yet been able to test the amp.
Yes
Hi-Res Audio Compatible
This feature refers to if the product is capable of Hi-Res Audio (HRA) playback.

Incredible power in a small package

December 31, 2014

This amp is great it is extremely small definetly puts out 300 if not more. And does not get hot maybe a little warm but that's about it. The only complaint is the gloss finish it is easy to scratch other than that amazing.

What a great product.

March 7, 2014

I bought this to power my JL Audio compact 10" woofer. I wanted a small amp so I could mount it under the dash. I also have an MVPA4 under my dash. They both fit and sound great. I have yet to get it warm. The gain is at about 3/4 now. I could not be happier. NVX should be commended.

December 21, 2013

I bought this to put in my wife's 06 Jeep Liberty to power an alpine type r 12 2 ohm in the back. I used 8 gauge wire and when i fired it up for the first time I was blown away, shocked, and happy all at the same time. I had to turn the subwoofer output all the way down on the cd player to make it manageable. I was able to mount it behind the center console on the transmission hump (under the ac controls) and only needed to run speaker wire to the back. Makes for a nice clean installation.
The only con is that the terminals are small. Its hard to find an 8 gauge terminal that will fit in the space provided and the price is kinda high for 300 watts.
Nonetheless, the clean installation (hidden amp) is perfect and the volume is every bit of 300 watts RMS.

Powers my sub just fine.

December 15, 2013

I felt compelled to write this review after reading the other one. I have it hooked up to the XQW104 wired at 2 ohms and it pushes 300W. I got it installed in Valencia with Allyn and he tested it with their amp dyno and it puts out every bit of 300W RMS. The sub sounds great, the amp is ridiculously tiny. To even get 100W RMS would be crazy and this thing pushes wayyyy more than that.

Oh and I'm NOT sure why you would use this on FULL-RANGE speakers anyways given it only has a LPF. Of course it will sound like a "tunnel" since you will not get any frequencies above 400Hz.

Great amplifier!

February 10, 2014

An amp should be small for it's output, sound great and not get hot. This one does all that. Its size allowed me to install it and an MVPA4 under my instrument panel (2011 F150). They power all of my speakers and my JL 10TW3-D4. Locating the amps in the instrument panel GREATLY simplifies my wiring.

I have this amp paired with a NVX NSW124 along with all OFC NVX wiring kit and NVX bass reconstructor in a 2013 scion tc Release Series, and boy does she bang. I was told that I have two 12" inch subs and when I say I'm only running one 12 I was that if it is one sub it's at least one 18 inch. If you have limited space or are like me want to keep enough space In your cargo area to travel this is the ultimate set up! BTW if you are going to use the factory head unit like I did, although it has RCA outputs you will still need to get a line driver, it mad a night and day difference, I went with the Axxess AX-LDBK

This product needs more power out put. It doesn't push enough power to get clear audio for 2 speakers. On a new pair of JL audio 6 inch speakers with the volume turned up to the max it sounds as if you are in a tunnel instead of a concert.

Perfect size!

May 16, 2015

I installed this micro amp on my 6 1/2" micro sub box by jl audio in the back of my Jetta sportwagon. The size of the amp allowed me to mount it directly to the top of the ported box without covering the port. This outfit has more power than the sub runs on allowing my to operate without maximum settings and gives great definition to the low end harmonics within the passenger compartment. I recommend considering this amp if your needs include quality sound without compromising room. Great for trucks and wagons. A remote bass boost knob is the only feature this amp is missing.

Bought this little amp cause space was a big issue, did a lot of research and made my mind up on getting this one. It never gets hot and a very clear signal, right now I have it powering a ported JL W3 6.5" turned down and friends think I have a 12" in my truck and are blown away with my setup.

Perfect Amp

September 19, 2015

I was looking for an amp that was small, but could provide enough clean power to run 2 JL Audio 10 inch subs when I ran across this unit. At first I was a little apprehensive, but I figured what do I have to lose. When it arrived I was amazed at how small it really was. Took me about 45 mins to install since I already had all the wiring run prior to receiving it. From the moment I turned it on I was amazed at how much power it provided. Not just power, but clean efficient power. Well worth the money spent and in fact I purchased the 4 channel amp to power my mids and highs. I was equally impressed with that amp as well. I definitely recommend these amps to anyone looking for a compact amp with plenty of power.

Oh and to the person that said this amp "Sounded like he was in tunnel instead of a concert", why in the hell would you hook a mono amp to a pair of speakers? Common sense should tell you that's not correct.

Awesome Amp

October 6, 2015

I have this paired with a now discontinued NVX 10" 3" magnet sub that takes 500W RMS and it delivers. It hits just like my 12" NVX I have in another car and it is clear.
Amp allows plenty of adjustibility and everything you can ask from an amp.
Plus it is so small!
My only complaint is the face of it looked scratched and used already.

Need something powerful enough but also small enough for a stealth install.
Mikalae H on May 28, 2016
This will be going in my '96 F-150 Pickup. It's a regular cab, so there's not much space to play with.

Because this is a good deal an they make good products. Plus, I know if i have any issues i can contact them an they will get me taken care of.

I'm just about sold on this amp. Two quetsions:
1. I see it has High Level Inputs with Auto turn on (This means no Remote wire needs to be ran if using High Level Inputs correct?

2. Is this a good match for an Alpine Type R (600W RMS). I was running it with an Alpine 500W amp at 2 ohms, I'd be running it the same way with this amp (Dual 4 ohm Voice Coils).
Danner on Jul 30, 2015
Best Answer: Answers:
1. I do't know. I have two of these and have used the turn on input on both. Call NVX. They are very helpful.
2. At 2 ohms, this amp is rated at 300W RMS. I don't know if your Alpine amp was 500W RMS or PEAK. Mine are connected to JL Audio 10TW3 subwoofers which are 2 ohm 400W rated. They work great for sound quality. Not made just for loudness.

I have a Harley Davidson with the stock Harmon Kardon head unit. It a 2006. The radio does not have a sub output on it. I have a Polk sub DB 840 DVC. Will this amp work for it and how do I wire it from the head unit?
Jim T on May 11, 2016
Best Answer: The unit has a line level input and a low pass crossover, so you would simply split the line in to one of your speakers (or direct out of the head unit) and connect the sub to the output from the amp. Make sure not to ground any of the speaker wires as these amps do not have an earth ground on their speaker outputs.

can this amp be used other than for a sub woofer?
James O on Jan 20, 2016
Best Answer: Hi James,

The amplifier is specifically intended for subwoofers, considering it is designed to only amplifier frequencies UNDER ~400 Hz. But, what did you have in mind?

Will high level inputs turn on the amp also?
A shopper on Feb 20, 2016
Best Answer: Hello. I bought this AMP for low level(SUB) install and to answer your question, I sure it will not work with high level inputs because it wasn't designed to. I also have the MVPA4, which is probably what you need. I hope this helps you....Good luck withe install.....By the way, these are great amps, reliable and saves lots of space....I have them both on my Harley(mount side-by-side)

What position can this amp NOT be mounte in ? As I'm looking to install this in a very small car with limited mounting options and areas.
Asaint on Dec 3, 2015
Best Answer: It don't think that is real important. Mine has been placed upside down since install of 11/2 years ago. I have it tie-wrapped to rear seat frame.
It doesn't get very hot but I have made sure it gets proper ventilation.

Would you or, can you test the output of an amp, say the nvx mvpa1, if i purchase one? I want to go small but, i would like to know how much power it will be putting out. I could then match a sub with it.
michael c on Jan 14, 2015
Best Answer: Hello Michael,

No, we cannot do that, unfortunately. Logistics aside, we cannot honor such a request because that would require opening a customers package, which would be very irresponsible on our part as a retailer. Like all things car audio, you are to trust the manufacture's specs:

RMS Power Rating:
4 ohms: 200 watts x 1 chan.
2 ohms: 300 watts x 1 chan.

Sonic Electronix Certified Power Rating*:
4 ohms: 268 watts x 1 chan.
2 ohms: 476 watts x 1 chan.

What would be the best way to hook this AMP up to a Kicker 6.75" CompRT DVC 2ohm subwoofer?
Vince G on Jul 31, 2015
Best Answer: Hello Vince,

There is only one way. The MVPA1 is NOT stable down to 1ohm, so your ONLY option for the CompRT67 is to wire in series up to a 4ohm load. Coincidentally, this works in your favor, as the driver is only asking for 150W RMS.

my set up is 2 NVX MVPA1 amps, each powering 1 Kicker 8" sub (1ohm DVC wired in series for 2 ohms). my head unit is stock, and does not have RCA outs. the head unit is 4 channel with speaker level outs.
from the head unit, i plan to use the front left and front right outputs as inputs to another amp (not in question) for the mids and highs.
from the head unit, i plan to use the left rear and right rear outputs as inputs to the NVX MVPA1 amps. how do i wire the outputs from the head unit to the amps?
1. do i take the head unit left channel output to one amp and the head unit right channel output to the other?
1a. if so, do i parallel the left channel output to both the left and right channel inputs on the left amp?
1b. or do i only wire the left channel from the head unit to the left input on the amp?
OR
2. do i wire the head unit left and right outputs in parallel to both amps?
