Headphone Design

Headphone Type

This is the design of the earpieces on the headphones. Some headphones go inside the ear, while others rest on the outside of the ear. This helps you know exactly what type of headphones you will be receiving.

In-Ear: The ear buds go into the ear. Most often, the right and left ear buds are two separate pieces.

Enclosed-Ear: Usually are found on the larger headphones. They rest on top of the ear and have padding for comfort, as well as enclosing the ear to the speaker. This type of headphone helps to filter out surrounding noise.

On-Ear: This type of headphone involves the speaker sitting gently on the ear without going in the ear or sealing it off.

Enclosed-Ear
Headband Type

Headphone type refers to the construction of the headphones.

Around the Ear means that the headphones wrap around the ear to provide a secure fit. This is most often seen in active and sports headphones.

Around the Neck means that the headphones wrap around the neck. This is also seen in active and sports headphones.

Earbuds means that the right and left sides of the headphones are separated and will fit securely into the ear. These are small, compact, and user friendly.

Over the Head headphones mean that the right and left speakers are connected with a support that goes over the head and rests on top. This is the typical headphone type.

Around the Ear
Specifically For
Some headphones can use an IR Transmitter in your vehicle, while some can be plugged into your media device and be used on the go or at home.
Home/Portable
Acoustic Principle

The basic design of the headphones. There are 3 different types:

Open: Have ports that allow air through the back of the diaphragms, enabling the headphones to sound like the music is coming from an outside source.

Closed: Completely sealed and have no air passing through the diaphragms. Sounds like you are in a closed off room.

Semi-open: Have slots or ports in the back of the cup and are partially open. This allows for a mixed sound between an open and closed headphone.

Audio Features

Driver Type

The physical design of the driver in the headphones.

Balanced Armature:
A balanced armature driver uses a coil wrapped around an armature which is held in between two magnets until it is stimulated by an electrical current. When stimulated, this armature is magnetized which causes it to rotate one way or the other around a pivot point which moves the diaphragm to create sound. Balanced armature driver headphones are generally earbuds and can have multiple drivers in each earbud.

Dynamic:
Dynamic drivers are the most common driver type. They feature a permanent magnet, usually neodymium, a voice coil and a conical diaphragm to drive your music. A dynamic headphone driver looks pretty much identical to any typical home theater speaker.

Electrostatic:
Electrostatic drivers are made up of an extremely thin membrane, usually a coated PET film, stretched between two metal plates. An electrical signal is applied to the metal plates to create an electrical field which, depending on its polarity, draws the speaker diaphragm toward one of the plates which forces air through the perforations in the diaphragm which generates the sound wave.

Planar Magnetic:
A planar magnetic driver is made up of a large membrane suspended between two sets of oppositely aligned magnets. An electric charge is applied to the membrane to induce movement and produce sound waves.

Dynamic
Impedance
The opposition to electric current, a higher impedance means a higher electrical resistance. This is measured in ohms.
32 ohms
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
103 dB
Driver Size
This refers to the diameter of the driver (speaker) on each side of the headphone.
40 mm
Power Output
Refers to the power output rating (in watts) of the headphones.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
20 - 20,000 Hz
Audiophile
Audiophile headphones represent some of the finest headphones available. Audiophile headphones produce genuinely outstanding sound quality as well as extraordinary build quality, components and comfort. They are truly the finest headphones available.
Built-in Amplifier
This refers to whether the headphones have an amplifier built-in.
Amplifier Recommended
This refers to whether a separate headphone amplifier is recommended for use with a specific pair of headphones. It is highly recommended that any headphone with an impedance greater than 100 ohms be amplified.
Pass Throughs
Refers to whether a pair of headphones has an output to connect to another pair of headphones.

Sound Signature

Sound Staging & Imaging
Sound Staging and Imaging refers to the ability of a pair of headphones to create the placement of instruments and vocalists in a recording. A small sound stage is very difficult to determine where the instruments are in relation to the vocalists, everything sounds like it's coming from the same place. An extra large sound stage separates the instruments and vocalists so that you can clearly tell where each is on the sound stage.
Clarity/Detail
Refers to how clear the headphones audio reproduction is.
Tone/Timbre
Refers to the quality of a music note that distinguishes different types of sound production (voices, musical instruments, etc.).
Bass
Refers to the bass performance of the headphones. Rated from Light bass to extreme bass.

Great Bluetooth headphones Philips SHB7000/28

March 30, 2014

Philips SHB7000/28 are some of the best head phones I've owned. I have owned the most expensive head phones out there and these sound as good and better than some. Great buy.

To be honest I can't believe how great they are...

November 14, 2014

I'm not rich. When I'm looking to buy something like bluetooth headphones, I look for the best price because I'd rather have a good price than top quality. For example, "Bose" or "Beats" were two words that never entered my search for headphones. But after a month of owning these Philips bluetooth headphones I gotta think I found near those brands in terms of quality. They are awesome. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an audiophile by no means, but I still know what sounds great to me, and these far exceeded my expectations. I primarily got them to use with my Playstation 3 (which they work absolutely perfectly). But I have listened to hours of music on them, and have had a number of phone conversations with them. The people on the other end could not tell a difference between me having the phone to my ear or when I'm using the headphones. I would absolutely buy these again and I would absolutely recommend them to friends. Couldn't be happier in both price and quality.

so i have been using it for a few weeks now and i love it over all. the battery last long one of the things that i was scared of. and its simple to use and set up. the manual is really simple. it actually comes in a foldable form so if anything you can put it in the wallet. the only thing that is not the best but i can get past is that its missing the bold range of sound. it has the mids and high ranges but for sure it is lacking in the lower ranges towards the bass. its awesome for calls they are clear and people can hear you just as creal. too clear sometimes because it will also pick up background voices from what people on the other end have told me.

Excellent product

March 21, 2014

This product has it's pros and cons and I'll name some pros first. Some pros are that the headset are easy to pair with Bluetooth capable devices, it sounds great, and it can also hook up with a wire. Some cons are that it hurts the ears after a while of wearing them, kind of hard to use the skip and backward buttons because they are the same buttons as the volume controls, and they are not foldable.

Great for listening, but dont try to have a phone conversation

November 22, 2013

I have been looking for a good set of dual purpose headphones. I want great sound quality while listening to music via bluetooth, and the ability to have a conversation when the phone rings. Alas, I'm still looking. These guys sound great for listening to music, even in noisy conditions, but the mic is terrible. No one can understand a word I say when talking on a phone conversation.

If you want audio only, these are awesome, if you want to talk to someone on the phone, AVOID!!!!

July 7, 2014

I really like these head set, because they are light weight, easy to use and work great. I use them at the gym while doing cardio. The only complaint is that there was not a detailed instruction paper with it. The set of blue -tooth head were easy to figure out how to use. They have a great sound!

Good headphones

April 3, 2014

These headphones + my smartphone are the best thing since walkmans. The charge lasts better than expected, they are comfortable and have very decent sound quality. The headset controls work flawlessly with my phone. Only thing I minor complaint about is the mic is not good at all, but I don't really use them as a headset so it works out for me. Plus sonix is a good seller very happy with their service.

headphones are very good ... just as I imagined ... sound great, with very good bass ... is comfortable and easy to use ... the only bad thing is that you have trouble pairing with my notebook .. . was not always well matched pairs or sometimes but not heard in the headset ... I tried bluesoleil and another ... and the result was the same ... should come any special software for this type of product or recommended in one that serves their website with my mobile phone ... no problem, have a quick and perfect match ... and the functions are very easy to use

Shipping price to Canada could be lower if USPS, I think.
Shipping fast and timely.

Great headphones!

March 26, 2014

Work excellent. Pair up easy. I can wear them all day at work and they do not bother my ears at all. They are comfortable. Can't be beat for the price. The Bluetooth has way better range than my last Bluetooth headphones. The range is better than the manual states. I am thinking about buying another pair for home use. I don't use and have not used the mic function for phone use so I cannot comment about how that works. I use these strictly for listening to stuff from my computer. The battery last forever compared to my old headphones! I will never go back to an in ear or on ear headphone. You just can't compare the comfort and sound of an over the ear.
