Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

RMS Power @ 4 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

500 watts x 1 channels
RMS Power @ 2 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 2 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
Performance (Kenwood)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
1 - Mono
Total Peak Power Output
The total peak power output is measured as the wattage per channel multiplied by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

It is measured during a brief musical burst, such as a sudden drum accent. Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal.

The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

2000 watts
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

1000 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
4 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
Not Bridgeable
THD at Rated RMS Power
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
1%
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.
1 pair
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-pass (LP)
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

50 - 200 Hz
Subsonic Filter
Allows you to block (filter) ultra-low frequencies that your subs cannot reproduce.
20 - 50 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
100 dB
Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.
0 - 18 dB
Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.
No
Fan Cooled
A great feature to have if an amp generates a large amount of heat. Cooling fans can help regulate the temperature to prevent the amp from overheating (burning).
No
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
40A x 3
Strappable
Some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in order to increase the output of a single audio channel. These amplifiers feature RCA preamp outputs, allowing you to pass the signal directly from one amp to the other to ensure consistency.
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Hi-Res Audio Compatible
This feature refers to if the product is capable of Hi-Res Audio (HRA) playback.

November 11, 2014

Had the previous KAC 9105d and it slammed my 2 cvr 124 subs. Not to mention reliability. these stay cool, quite and look nice. And has a true output of 1000w rms at minimum. Would be great to have one of these power a L7 kicker 15"

Just got this baby hooked up to a RE audio sex12 and it slams in my vdub. It has yet to overheat on me or get too hot even in the summer heat. I guess the only downside is there is no remote. Great price and easy install

Surprised

January 24, 2015

Look/Design: Very sleek. Excellent looking design. Wish there was more lighting on it like the 9104 and 9105 but still very clean.

Durability: Pushes a Rockford P3 12 that I wired for 4 ohms, and I push it hard. Longest use was BLASTING it for about an hour, switching between hard rock and rap. Never shut off, and when I got home I checked to see how hot it was... it was warm. Just warm. Remember it's wired for 4 ohms and not 2 so it will get hotter at 2 ohms.

Features: Has low pass and subsonic filters and bass boost. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because there is no bass remote option (knob you can run from the amp to the front of car to adjust bass)

Ease of use: Easy to adjust, easy to splice RCA's into the connector, easy to hook up cables.... the same as any other good amp.

Value: Try to find an amp that gives you 1000 rms at 2 ohms and 500 rms at 4 ohms that is CEA 2006 certified for around this price.

Overall: I purchased this amp because I saw it pumped out 500 rms at 4 ohms and was cea 2006 compliant. Honestly I was skeptical at first. I even made sure I could return it for free if it didn't deliver as promise. After breaking in my sub, I set the input signal(gain) to 3/4 and have the bass boost at about 1/4 and it slams my P3. Chest pounding, great quality bass! My Music preference is hard rock and rap and they both sound great.

Conclusion: It is a good amp that delivers as promised for a good price.

My experience with car audio: A.A. in Electronics and have been doing my own car audio as a hobby for 10 years. ( plan on checking true rms when my o-scope at work gets back from calibration= will update)

March 21, 2015

I had this amp hooked up in a stealth enclosure in the left side t top area of a 02 formula. Its hooked up to a sundown audio E10D4 sub. I had to slightly clearance the box for the sub. Hits hard and sounds good . The rest of the speakers in the car are the factory monsoon with a alpine headunit. Im very happy with the performance of this amp. I took a road trip that's about 3 hours one way and no problems their and back.

August 11, 2015

Setup running over sized 4 gauge wire with second battery in the trunk. I have 2 vehicles running the same setup with no problems using 80 amp inline fuses, pushing 2 alpine type R's 10" subs running at 2 ohms. Makes the body move/warp & the windows almost blow out. amps are only turned up to half, best investment ever! Customer service went above & beyond to make my experience an easy process. I will purchase from this site for all future needs. A must if you want loud bass!! :D

This Amp Gets The Job Done!

January 21, 2016

My ratings pretty much some up my review and I only gave this 4 stars out of 5 for durability because I have only been running this amp for a month. The power you get for the price is hard to beat and it is a Kenwood not some swap meet brand amp. I have it powering a single NVX VCW124 @ 2ohms and it does a good job. Between this amp and another 300 watt amp powering my highs/mids I do suffer some voltage loss on my battery and dimming headlights when I turn the volume up high. I am happy with my purchase and I would recommend this amp to others.

How do I run this amp at 2 ohms?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2014
Best Answer: that is all about the speakers you hook up and how. so a single 2 ohm, or two 4 ohm in series would both give the amp a 2 ohm load

Do this amp have safe soft shut off and turn on features?
Meaning when turning it off and on will the volume slowly go up or down upon turning the system off or on.
A shopper on Apr 25, 2015
Best Answer: Hello! it does not have that feature sorry. The best thing to do to prevent your subs from coming on and there loud because you forgot to turn your music down or ect is to buy a epiccenter. This device cleans your music up and filters your bass and most importantly brings deep deep base. It has a supersonic filter to where it protects your subs from base that can hurt your subs. Hope this helps!

I was wondering if this would power 2 kicker 10CVR122's? I'm looking for a good match
A shopper on Apr 17, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

You are currently getting too vague of a response from other customers, so we're going to chime in.

Two Dual-2ohm subwoofers have the ability to be wired to 0.5ohms , 2ohms, and 8ohms. Two of YOUR subwoofers is obviously asking for 800w RMS total (400 + 400) . So if you look at the amplifiers specs, it will answer your question. That is, the amplifier cannot run at anything lower than 2ohms, so that's a good thing for you, and @2ohms its doing 1000w. That is slightly more than you need, but thats ok. It is important that the setup is installed by a professional, to assure everything runs well.

I have an older version of this model, and without any changes to my system, or warning symptoms of any kind, the amp just stopped working. No blown fuses, no protect mode, nothing. I was using it to power 1 Audiopipe 8" DVC sub wired in parallel for a 2ohm load. It suddenly just stopped powering on, and I've troubleshot and replaced every component, and nothing works. It's only a 4yr old amp and should run for another 4yrs. I've always heard good things about Kenwood amps, but this is my first experience with one, and will also be my last! Anyone have any thought's?

Best Answer: My amp is mounted to the floor of my truck under the passenger seat. I worked as an installer for a local stereo shop a few years ago, and my kid's have fed a steady stream of their friends through my shop for custom enclosures and installs. This is the first amp failure I have experienced in over 30yrs of stereo work. I'm stumped

ok I have 2 12" 4ohm kicker comps 500 watts peak at 150rms, and 2 12" 8ohm kicker comps 500 watts at 15rms. Both sets are single voice coils, will this amp do what I need it to do, and if so can I hook all 4 sub to it at the same time? If not can some one tell me what I would need to do so.
victor s on Mar 16, 2016
Best Answer: Hi Victor,

Despite all the descriptive information, you haven't provides us with the information we need to answer your question. First, we need proper MODEL NUMBERS, not a description. (Just like you give a mechanic the Model of your vehicle and not "I have a V6 , 400HP, four wheeled, four door vehicle" =P ) . In addition, we don't know "what [you] need it to do", so please elaborate (obviously you want the amp to power your subs, but we want to make sure you are talking about something else. We don't like to assume or pretend to read minds =P ) . Lastly, "and if so can I hook all 4 sub to it at the same time?"..No matter the information you give us, this is an automatic NO. You CANNOT mix and match different model subwoofers, Period. "If not can some one tell me what I would need to do so." ...two amplifiers.

why cant you bridge this amp when you have a 2 channel setup? How do you go about hooking up the 2ohms and the 4ohms. I don't understand that..
victor s on Mar 16, 2016
Best Answer: Hi Victor,

-why cant you bridge this amp when you have a 2 channel setup?

The KAC-9106D is MONOblock, that means ONE channel. You cannot bridge ONE channel, that is physically impossible. The two OUTPUTS on the amplifier are just that, OUTPUTS - NOT channels. If they were channels, we and Kenwood would have called is so.

-How do you go about hooking up the 2ohms and the 4ohms. I don't understand that..

The subwoofer(s) that you choose determines the final impedance of the setup. There are many types of subwoofers (we don't have the space to explain it all, we suggest continuing to do your homework), but for the sake of conversation lets say you have a Single-2ohm subwoofer and a Single-4ohm subwoofer, like these. Neither is "better" the other, they are just set up at a different load in order for YOU to properly match with your amplifier. Neither is "better" than the other - generally speaking - they are just there to make matching easier. The Single-2ohm will obviously get the 2ohm power rating of the amplifier and the Single-4ohm the 4ohm.

If after this you still don't understand, then we highly recommend doing one of three things: 1) Consulting a professional to help you build your setup, 2) Give our sales team a call to map your setup and/or 3) Homework, homework, homework.

Would you recommend this for two Polk 12's at 720 RMS?
Connor K on Oct 14, 2015
Best Answer: Yes it would work. I bought the same amplifier for a set of 12" Polk Audio Subs that have an output of 720 watts continuous power and a peak of 1440 watts max power output. It works great, doesn't over hear at all. Its always better to get a bigger amplifier then you actually need so you don't burn it up.

How do I connect the amp to a single 4ohm DVC sub? There are four terminals on the amp yet all the speaker wiring diagrams I have seen show 2 terminals. The speaker is a 1200w RMS sub. I prefer to use the 4 ohm rather than the 2 ohm sub so that I can run the amp at 900w @2ohm as opposed to 1200 watts @1ohm. I don't want to stress my car electrical system. And I don't want to have to upgrade either :) Thanks in advance.
Bwana L on Sep 13, 2015
Best Answer: Apologies for the mixup of the specs. I gave the specs for Rockford Fosgate Prime 1,200-Wat instead of the Kenwood. Still I want to know how to connect the 4 terminals to a single 4 ohm subwoofer for an output of 1000 w rms @2ohms

I have 2 pioneer ts-w310s4 12" speakers. will this amp run them? They are 1400w max 4ohm.
A shopper on May 21, 2015
Best Answer: I run 2 Image Dynamics IDQ-15's at 2ohm with mine. It's a great amp. All I can say is try it out. If it don't perform how you like, buy another on and run each sub from its own amp. They will look great attached to the back of your sub box too!

Will this match the Kicker CompR 12" DVC 4Ohm? I wanted to go with Kenwood KAC-9106D But I think 1000Rms at 2 ohms will fry the sub, is that true? Becasue I heard kicker compr 12 can handle way more than 800rms. Is there a chance if I buy the 9601d and turn the gain all the way down it will properly work until i get the seconds sub in far future? And also which wirink kit should I get with this amp? Links would be appreciated. Thank You!

Kenwood KAC-5001PS
Best Answer: Hello Aziz,

The second can be properly ran. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with the driver being able to "handle way more". And it ESPECIALLY has nothing to do with turning "the gain all the way down" which we HIGHLY advise against. It all comes down to 1)Being responsible and 2)Making sure the system is tuned properly and built well. The most important part of the setup is the Signal you send the amplifier. If you sen the amplifier a dirty signal, its going to amplify a dirty signal, and That is going to destroy the driver , not the power. In addition, a clean Power Signal is going to be needed, which leads to the wiring kit; an OFC wiring kit is highly recommended .

Best Answer: Hello,

No. The amp is far too much power (1000w RMS @ 2ohms) . The better match would be the Rockford Fosgate P3D2-12 wired up to 4ohms, but then you would be underpowering the driver. We don't suggest the pair.

I have 2 12" kicker cvrs they are 1600w max and 800w rms, and I ran the previous discontinued model of this amp which was the 1800w max. Will this amp work just as well? I feel like a little extra power won't hurt anything
A shopper on Mar 11, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

Unfortunately, despite the details you've provided, you have not given us enough information to accurately answer your question. We ask that you resubmit your question, but DO NOT give Descriptions, provide MODEL NUMBERS. Also, "MAX" figures are useless figures when matching components, so do not include that either; stick to the Model Numbers.

What are the input and output connection types for this amplifier? Are the RCAs for signal input, and the screw terminals for power supply and subwoofer out?

I am confused because there are 2 pairs of each, yet it is a 1 channel amplifier.
broseph on Oct 21, 2014
Best Answer: Hello David,

The RCAs are the Inputs.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures_new.php?id=76496&picture_id=1991246

The Spade Terminals are the Outputs.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures_new.php?id=76496&picture_id=1991250

The Kenwood KAC-9106D is designed like all modern 'Pro' Monoblocks are, with multiple outputs. This is simply made - ironically - to make installation easier. To avoid confusion, use just One set of terminals [i.e. 1 Postitive (+) & 1 Negative (-)]. As long as the sub(s) are wired properly, this will not alter the performance.

BE AWARE, if you choose to instead use both sets of terminals, the amp brings the outputs together within [read: Parallel] .

Here are examples of modern monoblocks with such a configuration;
