Power Specifications - Full Range Channels

RMS Power @ 4 ohms

The RMS power rating is the measure of continuous power that an amplifier can output, or a speaker can handle. It is the most accurate depiction of real, continuous power that the industry has so far.

If the final impedance of your speakers or subwoofers equals 4 ohms, this is how much power this amplifier will supply at that ohm level. The higher the RMS wattage, the more clean and loud your music will sound.

45 watts x 4 channels

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

D
Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.
4
Total Peak Power Output
The total peak power output is measured as the wattage per channel multiplied by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

It is measured during a brief musical burst, such as a sudden drum accent. Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal.

The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

400 watts
Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

180 watts
Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.
10 AWG
Minimum Impedance Unbridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is not bridged.
4 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged
The lowest impedance the amplifier will handle when it is bridged.
Not Bridgeable
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Yes
Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-Pass (LP)
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

50 - 200 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
90 dB
Fuse Rating
The amperage and the number of fuse(s) an amp requires.
15A x 1
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes
Hi-Res Audio Compatible
This feature refers to if the product is capable of Hi-Res Audio (HRA) playback.

Great little amp for the price

March 21, 2015

I have this little amp installed in my car with aftermarket speakers (6X9). I bought it mainly because it was small and could hide it under the head unit so I don't have an annoying amp and cables under the seats. I was not expecting much on the performance side since it is only 400W but I was very impressed! Highs are crystal clear and it adds powerfull bass in comparision to the radio built-in amp. A lot of amps are cheaper for the same power rating but if you really need small size this amp is the way to go!

Here's the good, The Bad, and the Ugly.
Sounds great!
I have no idea what the RCA level inputs take. It's not in the specs.
My Sony head unit has 5V outputs. I think this unit takes 2-4 volts.
My issue: It gets too loud before the dynamic range opens up from the head unit. No way to adjust at the amp for the higher level inputs. I can only turn it up to 1/3rd of the head units output. I want 2/3 to open up that dynamic range.

Just as expected...

September 17, 2014

Received the unit and installed in my pontoon boat. Easily connected to my Sony DSX-MS60. Has only been installed for a week so can't post much experience with amp. Very pleased thus far and thinking about purchasing same amp for my 20' bowrider.

Easy installation and great sound

September 19, 2015

Installed in 2010 VW Sportwagen with Kenwood KDC-BT758HD receiver and two sets of Polk DB6501 component speakers. Once i added the second set of speakers the head unit couldn't deliver the power. The KAC-M1804 really makes these speakers stand out and deliver great sound.
Very easy to install

Decent little Amp

November 12, 2016

The Good:

- Very Compact, easy to install, especially in tight places - I put it vertically next to the glove box bheind the dash with no issues.

- Puts out good power for its size with little draw and produces a nice clean signal.

- Easy to set up with the harness kit.

- Not expensive

The Less than Good:

- No gains, which may or may not be an issue, depending on your head unit and preferred volume/cab size (I had no problem with a Pioneer 720bt in my Elantra).

- Causes a slight *pop* on shutdown - not enough to damage the speakers (probably), but still audible, and a little annoying.

- Contains a 15A fuse. If it was truly a 400W max, it should be able to handle 25+A, so it makes me wonder... although I have never tripped it.

Good value and sound, easy hookup

November 22, 2015

I used this as part of a new sound system in a 1994 Mustang GT (with a Kenwood cd player/receiver and 6x8 Kicker speakers). All together this system sounds better than the factory installation did.

Since it is new to me I cannot honestly comment on durability but Kenwood has a good reputation for that. The review did not allow me to skip rating durability so I rated it in the middle...

Great for what it is

November 20, 2015

I got this amp to power 4 Cerwin Vega door speakers. It put out a lot more power than my kenwood head unit and greatly improved my sound. You know it puts out its rated power because it's CEA-2006 compliant. I was able to fit it in my dash behind my head unit. It worked right away when I hooked it up, which was a relief. Keep in mind, after playing loud for a while it does get pretty warm. All in all great buy for anyone looking for a little boost over what their head unit can put out.

what is the P Con wire connect to?
Patrick T on Nov 15, 2015
Best Answer: If it's Blue, Itll connect to the head unit blue antenna wire. This will power up the amp when the head is turned on. It is prefered to connect it to any external amp labeled wire from the head unit (also blue, maybe with a stripe). Some units, prolly older, only turn the antenna on when in tuner mode. That's why the other (amp) wire is preferred. If you have no blue wire coming from the head, connect to the red wire that comes on with ignition. DO NOT connect it to a yellow wire. That will keep it on and run your battery in the dirt. Hope this helps!

can you bridge 2 of the channels?

Would this be what I need for Pontoon Boat system? I am planning to install a system consisting of Kenwood KMR-D362BT Head Unit, Kenwood KAC-M1804 Amp, Kenwood P-WD250MRW 10" Marine Sub/Amp Package, and 4 KICKER KM6000 6.5" marine speakers; would this be what I need to power everything? Don't want to drain the boat's main battery but have never done a boat install before so I am not quite sure. If this won't do the trick, what will? P.S. Sonic is the greatest!

i just bought this amp for my harley street glide, can i use y rica to make 4 speaker input?
alberto b on Jun 3, 2016
Best Answer: I know its a four channel amp, but I don't know why you would need more than two inputs. I guess you can split the input to use it with, for example, a stereo and a second device. I would imagine that the second device would need provide the on/off signal that the stereo has. I guess technically this would work, provided that only one of the inputs were on at a time. Since you are using this on a bike, you may be limited by space. I would imagine there is some kind of switching device that would provide you with the inputs that can automatically/manually detect as well as providing the on/off signal.

This may work but I would talk to a professional stereo installer.

i bought the kenwood kacm1804 for my hd streetglide. i didnt realize intill taking it apart but the harley is only equiped with two speakers in the original wire harness. is there any way i can use 4 speaker without losing the watts or make use of the 4 chanel amp?
David J on Dec 6, 2014
Best Answer: I put it in my street glide and it works great, music is clear at 90mph..
The amp is set up as a 4 channel but you don't have to use all 4. I'm just using the two front channels for now, I upgraded the speakers in the fairing to 6-1/2" Alpines which helps of course.. If you want 4 speakers they make bag lid speaker that you can install and use the other two channels to push.
The wiring harness on the amp is long enough that you can directly wire it to the speakers and just tuck the stock wiring away.
Hope that helps.

Can I just use the power and ground from the wiring harness for this amp?
ryan k on Jan 21, 2016
Best Answer: The ground, yes. The power wire you should run to the battery.
Will the harness handle it? Possibly, but that Amp will draw around 10 amps which will more than likely overload whatever circuit you tap into.
