Bridged Peak/Max Power

Bridging refers to combining two channels on an amplifier to create one channel with double the voltage and an increased power output. A 2-channel amplifier will bridge down to 1-channel and a 4-channel amplifier can bridge to create 2-channels. An amplifier is most commonly bridged to drive a subwoofer.

Remember, once you bridge two channels down to one its final impedance will be 4 ohms unless otherwise specified. This rating lists the Peak/Max power created once an amplifier is bridged.

Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
GM Digital (Pioneer)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Low-Pass (LP)
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency
The low-pass crossover frequency is typically used for subwoofers. It can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable low-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies below the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies above the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.

Bass Boost
The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.

Bass/Gain Remote
If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.

I just bought 2 Pioneer TS-W310D4 subs. I'm new to this and confused about the wiring diagrams for this monoblock amp. I can't understand how to go go by the diagram when most enclosures have the subs separated. These diagrams don't really acknowledge that, and I think it would be helpful to all the beginners. ?

The link above shows the outputs. It is set up for situations where the subwoofers have their own chamber and terminal - like, I think, you are implying.
So, you are simply going to give Each Sub its own Output. The Pioneer TS-W310D4 can only be wired in Parallel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smw-6VRy5QY
The amplifier will then do the rest of the work.
You will essentially be wiring the setup like the following picture.
(IGNORE THE NUMBERS AND FIGURES, ONLY LOOK AT THE WIRING AND HOW IT IS CONNECTED TO THE AMP. I KNOW YOUR AMP IS A MONOBLOCK, I KNOW YOU WANT TO WIRE TO A 1OHM LOAD, YOU DO NOT NEED TO POINT THIS OUT, TRUST US.)

will this amplifier match with 2 fosgate 15" p2d4 600/800 watt rms?

Best Answer: Yes, but you have to wire the subs correctly. The coils on each sub in parallel, thus creating a 2ohm load per sub. The amp has 2 sets of speaker outputs, but that is for situations like this - they are both attached to one channel. Hook up one 2ohm sub to one output, the other 2ohm sub to the second output, and that will in total create a 1 ohm channel, thus giving you the 800w the amp is rated for, and split between two subs, that's 400 a piece.

I will say you may want to look at getting a more powerful amp. While this is rated to do 800w RMS, I'm not sure it really does at 1 ohm. I replaced mine with the next model up.

I have a Pioneer GM D9601, GM D8601, and two GM D8604, what would be a good amp wiring kit that will power these amps sufficiently?

Best Answer: I don't think they make a good enough wiring kit. You'll have to make your own. I bought 20' of power & ground (0gauge) wire from NVX. I ran that to their distribution blocks. Then used their 4 gauge wire to hook up 2 gm-d9601 & a gm-d8604. I fused it with a kicker 300amp fuse before the block & a 200amp fuse to each amp after the block. No troubles with wiring heating up & everything works great. NVX big 3 bundle is also good. Have the xs-d3400 under the hood & eventually a xp series battery in the back.

is the knob to turn down the bass (like a PAC LC-1) or is it an actual bass boost knob (clipping)??

Best Answer: I have one installed, and I believe it controls the 42hz (might be 40) frequently specifically. I tuned mine to be at optimal level when turned halfway. Turning it up increases the "oomph" fairly well, just as turning it down reduces it significantly, but it does not affect ALL bass frequencies - just the most common (or prevalent) one.

Would this amp be a good match for two Pioneer TS-W311D4 (1400W Peak/400W RMS 12" Champion Series Dual 4 ohm) subwoofers? Thanks in advance!

Best Answer: Absolutely, peak power makes no diff it's the RMS power your looking to see if the amp covers, and this amp will cover them just fine as I believe this amp is 800w RMS and is 1ohm stable. So 2 subs at 400w RMS= 8000w amp needed, you will also need to bridge the subs to 1ohm. Hope this helps

this amp has 4 terminal can i use them all fot the 2 coils??
or i have to join the coil's fisrt and then plug it into the 2 terminals only??

Technically, you can use all four. However, we highly suggest avoiding doing that if you are not experienced in putting together such a setup. So, to answer your question, simply use one pair of terminals. It doesn't matter which ones you use, as long as they are opposite polarity.

Best Answer: You shouldn't. That enclosure has a 2ohm impedance and this amp can't deliver that much power at 2ohms. You need to match the impedance of your amp mode and sub enclosure for best results to avoid problems.

i just bought the gm-d8601 pioneer amp to run 2 q power 4 ohm 600 watts 10 inch woofers i have them at 2 ohms going to the amp my question would be how to set or lower the gain so it doesn"t over power the subs i am running system off a stock radio ? thank you

There is A LOT of information on the web that will show you the various ways to do so. There isn't one "right" way. Well, technically speaking , the "right" way would be by using an oscilloscope , but we doubt you have one laying around.

However, if there is a specific power output (watts) you are aiming for, the a bit of math and using the DMM method would be the best approach. HOWEVER, assuming the information you've provided us is correct, there is literally no physical way to "over power the subs" . We have no idea what subwoofers you are referring to (you didn't provide a model number) but 600w x 2 = 1200 w., The amplifier only provides 500w @ 2ohms. So we don't see where your "over power" concern comes from. Your biggest concern should be distortion, sense you are underpowering by so much (this statement is an assumption because, again, we don't know what subwoofer this is). So, we suggest setting the gain Properly to match the output of the headunit and not be concerned with the power output, you're going to need all you can get WITHOUT distortion sense you are Underpowering.
