In-Dash Receiver Specifications

Receiver Size

Single DIN: 1 DIN dimensions will work with all single DIN installation kits we have to offer. Single DIN radios are the most common size for after-market stereos.

Single DIN slot with flip-out screen: The DIN stereo includes a retractable, flip-out screen. Before purchasing, make measurements to be sure there is no interference with dash accessories such as A/C vents or shift levers.

Single DIN slot with a larger face: Standard single DIN size, but the display is larger then the standard single DIN size. Due to the nature of the larger face, problems may arise when installing in particular vehicles. These stereos are great for single DIN slots where you want a larger screen.

1.5 DIN: This size is very uncommon in vehicles, however this size opening is most commonly found in Chrysler and Chevrolet vehicles.

Double DIN: Approximately 4-inches in height, this size is becoming more common every year. Prior to 2000, this size was typically only found in Japanese vehicles such as those made by Honda or Toyota. Now, it is becoming more popular for many vehicles to be fit with a Double DIN opening.

Single DIN
Faceplate Security

Detachable / Removable faceplate security: The most common anti-theft feature. It allows you to take the faceplate with you, thus disallowing operation, which deters theft.

Security Codes: Mainly a feature in high end video units which do not have a detachable face / screen. Once the unit is uninstalled (or stolen), a security code (or PIN) is required upon reinstallation. Though you no longer have your unit after the theft, the thief also does not have your security code, which makes the unit useless. The hope is the thief knows which units have security codes and he/she chooses not to steal your unit because of the security code.

Ghost technology: This is not commonly used, but can be found primarily in a select number of 2004-2005 head units. It creates an illusion that no unit is installed by appearing completely black when turned off. Potential thieves may steer clear because it appears as though no head unit is installed.

Anti-theft covers: Similar to ghost and hiding faces because they only create an illusion that the face/unit is not in place.

ESN: Stands for Electronic Serial Number. Allows the disabling of the radio and allows tracking if it is stolen.

Detachable
Remote Control
Allows control of specific features and functions from a remote control. Typically they are used to prevent button wear on your radio, or to allow easier navigation of menus.
Yes
Peak Power Output
This form of power rating refers to the maximum amount of power an electronic device can handle or output in an instant without damage occurring. Often times this maximum is achieved during a brief musical burst, such as a drum accent, or low bass hit.

Some manufacturers display peak power ratings on the face of their products to increase the appeal to consumers. The RMS power rating is more accurate, and we recommend using it for product comparison.

55 watts x 4 channels
RMS Power Output
The amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS rating, the louder and cleaner your music sounds. The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.
17 watts x 4 channels
Preamp RCA Outputs
RCA outputs, commonly known as preamp outputs, allow you to connect one or sometimes multiple external amplifiers. An in-dash receiver will commonly have one, two or three sets of RCA outputs that can be used to connect external amplifiers and other components. One pair of RCA outputs will typically provide a full range signal that can be used for most subwoofer or speaker amplifiers. Two pairs of RCA outputs can typically be configured as four full range signals, or also as two full range and two subwoofer signals. Three sets of RCA outputs will almost always produce four speaker signals and two subwoofer signals for use with multiple amplifiers.
3 Pairs (Front, Rear, and Subwoofer)
Preamp Voltage
The preamp output rating is measured in volts (V). The higher the rating, the stronger the signal. This results in less unwanted noise being picked up.
2 volts
Built-In Equalizer
The number of graphic or parametric equalizer bands the stereo receiver is equipped with. The more EQ options, the more you will be able to adjust your music to your liking.
10-Band
Display Type
The type of display on your receiver refers to the monitor that is used to display the source information such as song names, radio stations, or track times.

Dot-Matrix Text Display: A simple display which uses dots in specific illuminated color(s) to light up and form letters or numbers that are displayed on the receiver.

Graphic or Motion Display: Typically found in mid to high-end receivers and give your text information and receiver more life by adding motion, backgrounds, or multiple colors to your display. There are types of graphic displays such as 3D Graphic, Motion, and OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) displays. They can range from one color to full color displays and typically allow you to select from one of many built-in animations, background images, screensavers or other graphics to enhance your experience and add an extra bit of personality to your system. Some units also come with software that allow you to load your own customizable pictures or animations.

LCD Monitor Display: Can be as small as 2" or as large as 10". Some LCD displays are motorized for angle adjustment. LCD monitors display full motion video playback as well as your standard text such as track status, radio station information and more depending on the receiver's features.

LCD Text Display
Display Color
The display color refers to the color of the text and or graphics on the receiver.

Multi-Color: When more than one color is on the display, for example one part of the text is white, while the other part is blue.

Variable-Color: The display colors can be changed by the user. If the default color of text/display is blue for example, the user can change the settings to where the color turns to red. Variable color displays are typically described in detail in the item's description.

TFT-LCD Display: In-dash receivers with a video screen that display multiple colors and often times video such as DVD, navigation or other video sources.

Variable Colors
CD Signal-to-Noise
CD Signal-to-Noise Ratio is a key specification that is often overlooked by newbies. The CD S/N Ratio measures how well the CD player silences background noise. Higher ratings in decibels (dB) indicates less noise, and generally a cleaner signal.
120 dB
CEA-2006 Compliant
Amplifiers that have been tested to meet specific standards. When a car amplifier meets these standards, you can be sure that it will be able to produce the amount of power specified by the official CEA-2006 rating. Usually, these rating consist of the following items:
  • RMS Power
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio

This rating applies to both external car amplifiers, as well as the amplifiers inside of in-dash stereos.

Yes

Some RDS tuners can even break in with traffic alerts or emergency broadcasts when you're listening to a CD.

Audio / Video Inputs

USB Input
This feature refers to whether or not the receiver features an input to connect a USB device via standard USB or mini-USB. The USB input may be a connection on the front or rear of the unit with an extension cable for connecting devices to the receiver. Some units have an optional input that allows for a USB adapter to be purchased separately and used with the unit.
Front
Number of Front USB Inputs
1
Additional Audio/Video Inputs
These inputs enable the unit to receive an audio or video signal from a separate source. There are many different types of connections and ways to accomplish this. Most common are RCA Composite cables and 3.5mm mini-jack plugs.

RCA Composite Inputs
These are your typical red, white, and yellow RCA composite cables that are common among devices with audio and video inputs. The red and white cables are dedicated for audio. The red cable is for the right channel and the white is for the left channel. The yellow cable is specifically for the video signal. Because this type of auxiliary cable contains 2 channels of audio, it will support stereo sound.

3.5mm
This is commonly referred to as a mini-jack or a headphone jack. It is a 3.5mm plug that transfers audio only. There is a right and left audio channel on the plug which allows for stereo sound playback.

3.5mm AV Input
These plugs look similar to the common 3.5mm mini-jack, however they carry a third channel dedicated for video.

Optional
This means that an auxiliary input is possible, but only with the use of an optional accessory. These optional adapters will sometimes use the CD Changer port or other port on the back of a unit that might restrict the use of other expandability features. These accessories are typically sold separately.

Front 3.5mm Audio Input

Expandability Features

Navigation
Built-in navigation is a convenient feature that allows the driver to receive driving directions and guidance.

Some in-dash head units are built-in with the navigation features, while others require an add on navigation box. Other navigation options include portable navigation units that you can take with you or attach to the dash of your vehicle.

HD Radio
This feature refers to whether or not the receiver is capable of receiving high-definition digital HD Radio broadcasts by either a built-in HD Radio tuner, or more commonly with the purchase of an optional HD Radio tuner box. Receivers which are HD Radio Ready generally require an additional purchase of a separate tuner.
No
Bluetooth Connectivity
This feature refers to whether or not the head unit is able to connect to a hands-free Bluetooth device. Head units that are Bluetooth ready typically require the purchase of an optional adapter or accessory that connects to the rear of the head unit. This optional accessory allows you to accept phone calls through your head unit and speakers. Some head units have built-in Bluetooth hands free capabilities with an included remote-mount microphone or built-in microphone.
Yes (Built-in/Included [Bluetooth Controls, Adapter and/or Microphone Included])

The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile will wirelessly stream music and other audio from an A2DP compatible device.
Yes
Steering Wheel Control Compatible
In order to retain a vehicle's factory steering wheel remote controls, a wired-remote input is needed on the aftermarket stereo.

If "Yes", then the aftermarket stereo is compatible with steering wheel remote controls. If an additional accessory is required for the steering wheel controls to work properly, a compatible piece will be listed.

  • PAC ControlPro: PAC ControlPRO Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface
  • Axxess ASWC-1: Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface

Great Budget Deck!

October 14, 2015

Great deck that can easily power some 6.5's and 6x9's. Great clarity and bass that makes any music I choose to listen to sound amazing. Love the Mega Bass feature and the fact that it has 3 sets of pre outs at such a low price point. Bluetooth works great with my iPhone. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a new deck that looks and sounds great.

Awesome deck

October 11, 2015

I put this deck in a 99 Dodge Ram and it looks great. I really like all the functions that it has and the phone app works very well. It improved the sound of the stock speakers and has no output distortion all the way up to 50. I have had it In my truck for about a month now and it has held up great! No signs of wear and no issues. All the colors look very good and it will hook up to factory dimming if your stock radio has that option. Screen is easily seen in the sunlight! All in all I would definitely recommend this radio to anyone looking to upgrade!

Great quality and functionality for the price!

January 26, 2016

I've ordered this Sony head unit from Sonic Electronix.
I decided to install it on my Camry '03 myself. Watched few videos and got some tools and electric tape.
Installation:
Actually whole process took me a little more than an hour and provided free harness and dash kit were really handy.
At first the Dash Kit looked weak and didn't exactly match the car dash, but did its job well and after installing the head unit it drawn attention away from imperfections of the Dash Kit. After all i'm pretty happy with it.
Harness connection was super easy, all colors matched and I verified with my Camry's stereo's wiring diagram.
Appearance:
This colorful and stylish head unit definitely catches eye, carbon-like trip and overall look is awesome. A bunch of options to set up the color, separately for dash and screen! I change it ones in a while and gives a filling of a whole new stereo in your car!
Sound:
Few month before upgrading my stereo I've installed set of Pioneer speakers. I accidentally caught a good deal on those in a store and then could not stop.
So, back to our head unit. As soon as I turned it on I could feel tremendous gross of power and clarity of the sound comparing to Toyota's OEM stereo. You probably already have or considering getting a Subwoofer. So and I could not resist. You need it to feel the power of the sound this stereo can deliver to it. Sony offers so many setting to set up the sound perfect for your taste. MegaBass, EQ10, E.Clarity a bunch of presets, setting of position, crossover etc. This is something to learn and play with and get the most out of your stereo.
Functionality:
Everyone knows that it has Bluetooth, USB, Aux, Pre-Amps... but I will point out what I really appreciated and use everyday in my car.
This stereo is one of the kind, because it works with FLAC. This is a format of the high quality sound and easy to find online for free. When you upgrading your sound the imperfection of MP3 music becomes way more noticeable even if you not audiophile.
I got myself a mini thumb drive 128Gb for about $30. It's so small that I even forgot that it's there. I was worried about loading speed and it's just 2-5sec with the 50% load of the drive. I tried to plug in iPod Classic 6Gen with approximately same HD and load. It would take about 20 sec before it starts playing. Tiny USB drive is much cheaper and seamlessly plugged in to the stereo. Since this head unit doesn't have rear USB, with little flash drive there is no cables spoiling the look of this beautiful stereo.
Bluetooth Calling is extremely helpful feature. Most of the time my phone automatically connects to the stereo. It plays it's own ring tone. You can use a button on a stereo to answer and hang up the calls. External Mic. makes it easier to hear you during the phone conversation. And goes right back to your favorite tunes where you left 'em.
Pandora while playing on your phone connected thru the Bluetooth. You switch and like songs, brows stations, just like you going thru the folders on your USB drive.
It worth mentioning - removable front panel for theft protection. It more likely to detour thief from going into your car if you take the panel off ofcource.
I was using my new stereo from Sony for about a month and can't think of any Con's. Everything worked great from day one and it's just getting better as I load more music and playing with settings (there is a lot)!

Good deal

November 8, 2015

The radio was reasonably priced. My only criticism about it is that you push less buttons to get Blue Tooth and Sirius and Pandora. I only wanted the radio and CD part. It takes more time to go between the two. Also, it was hard to read the manual to find out how to set one color instead of a rainbow of colors that flash on the radio. The sound is great, installation was easy (I was told). I cannot speak to the durability of it as I have only owned it a month.

I was honestly skeptical, but I bought it. And honestly, I love this radio deck, it's colorful and you can get creative. What's also nice is the subwoofer outputs, very easy install and still a lot cheaper than best buy.!

Too much stereo for the money

September 6, 2016

For the past about 15 years I have used Sony car stereos in my vehicles. It started with just the desire to have a Bluetooth and satellite radio capability. After installing my first one in 2002, I've stuck with Sony. I've installs at least four of them in my cars since. Easy to install, head unit power is pretty good with aftermarket speakers, remote control (that's compatible with all of my other cars) but the three sets of RCAs on the back, and the XM capabilities, leave expansion options wide open. This unit is loaded with too many features for me to use, honestly. Can't beat it for the price.

This unit is the best , its got everything you need to start a very good system ! You can crank the volume, without any distortion,or change of tone! I love that it has a subwoofer output, that allowes you to change the bass for every other song that plays!

What are the differences between the MEX-N5100BT and the preceding model, the MEX-N5000BT?
A shopper on Feb 20, 2015
Hello,
I need a receiver that allows me to utilize bluetooth and operate music through my actual phone, not the receiver itself. My current receiver only allows operation of bluetooth through the faceplate itself which is annoying and cumbersome. Will this Sony receiver allow me to do that?
Ryan L on Sep 14, 2016
Best Answer: I'm not entirely sure what you mean. If you mean going into your media player on your phone and picking a song, then yes. You can pick any song you want right from your phone and it'll play through the receiver.

If what you're asking is if the music will play through the phone's built in speaker, then kind of. I'm not entirely sure about ios devices, but every android phone I've had has had a toggle which let's you switch between media and phone audio. If you wanted it only to play though your phone speaker you'd set it to phone sync only and it would work as you wish.

Why does my Sony MEX5100BT stereo display "Open APP" when I first start my car do I make it stop?

Thank you..
John L on Jan 25, 2016
Best Answer: If you are using a USB it won't display it but if you are using Bluetooth then it will. The reason it says "open app" is because you have to have downloaded the application to go along with the Radio. It isn't required but it is recommended by Sony. When you open the app you have options to pick inside the app that corresponds to the Radio. Like "Phone", "Bluetooth Music" , "Aux" etc.

Hopefully that help clear things up!!!

I have a 2006 VW beetle - the dash board is curved. How to I retrofit this unit is there a faceplate that I put over it and/or how would that cosmetically be done?
Leah S on Jun 18, 2016
Best Answer: As far as I know, and I'm no technician or anything, there is no way without a custom faceplate to make it fit aestheticly with that dash. It does come with a bit of trimming that might make it look a little better, but you won't get a perfectly seamless look with any aftermarket stereo. As for the stereo, it's a great unit with a lot of options and settings, and in the year that I've had it I've had absolutely no problems with it. If you can stand that it's not perfect, it's definitely worth it.

will I need a wiring harness for this unit to fit?
A shopper on Mar 11, 2015
Best Answer: Hello,

You didn't give us much information to work with, but it is safe to assume that your vehicle will require a Vehicle Specific Harness if you do not wish to splice directly into the OEM harness.

Add the headunit to your cart, enter your vehicle information when prompted, and allow the accessories to be added along with the headunit. Said accessories is what is needed to properly install the headunit.

it this better HU than Kenwood KDC-BT562U?
jhay1423 on Jan 26, 2016
Best Answer: Hello,

"Better" is rather subjective, so we can't provide an accurate response. Moreover, one might be a "better" fit for you than the other, but that only you can answer. If we are solely comparing the two based on features, then the N5100BT would be "better".

my truck already has xm radio on the stock head unit but i want to upgrade so i can have the hands free calling do i still need the additional kit to have the xm radio?
Cody D on Jan 5, 2016
Best Answer: Hi Cody,

We don't know what "my truck" refers to, but there is a slim chance that there is a harness available that will retain the OEM Sat Radio, albeit unlikely. Give our sales team a call to try to find a suitable harness for your application - in doing do, they can discount the harness with the purchase of the stereo. With that said, we highly recommend going with the Tuner Kit anyway. Not only is the installation fairly painless, but it also has a substantial rebate at the moment - more importantly, the headunit is specifically designed to work WITH the tuner kit and NOT your vehicle. So the operation will be far more fluid with said kit.

Amazon is wrong.

In fact, you can Physically see that the headunit is a Single DIN. Below is an example of a Double DIN headunit.
