JL Audio TW1 MicroSub Series Enclosed Subwoofer System

The TW1 subwoofer drivers offer an unparalleled combination of shallow mounting depth, nominal frontal clearance and extremely small enclosure requirements, making them an outstanding choice for tight-space, moderate power applications. They are the perfect bass solution for muscle cars, small cab trucks or any other application that requires JL Audio performance in an ultra-compact space. The driver achieves this extreme level of shallow-depth by compressing the architecture of the TW1 using a “concentric tube” structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the large motor structure much further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability and mechanical stability. In addition, the DMA-optimized motor system produces a consistent motor force over a long range of strokes and power levels. Those strokes don't prevent the driver from remaining compact, however, thanks to the frame design that minimizes the frontal clearance required for the excursion of the driver. This is accomplished by recessing the suspension attachment surface, so that most of the forward excursion occurs within the frame's architecture. It is because of all these ground breaking achievements that JL Audio chooses the TW1 to provide the voice for many of their PowerWedge series enclosures and Stealthboxes.

Although the TW1 Subwoofer can be driven with as little as 75 Watts, for best audio performance it is recommended to run an amplifier capable of between 200 - 300 Watts of continuous power per driver, like the JL Audio XD300/1v2 or JL Audio JX250/1. In addition, these subwoofers are optimized to operate in extremely compact enclosures. In fact, they call for a 26% smaller enclosure than their TW3 brethren.

Like so many other industry leading JL Audio products, all TW1 series of subwoofers are built in JL Audio's Miramar, Florida factory with extreme prejudice to craftsmanship and overall build quality. Its this attitude that delivers the JL Audio quality and performance we have all become accustomed to.

JL Audio's patented solution to overcome the lack of mechanical clearance, presented by "low profile subwoofers", employs a molded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large diameter voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps place the motor system higher up into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting excellent mechanical excursion.

DMA is JL Audio’s proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system and is aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, TW1 motors remain linear in motor force over an extreme range of excursion and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass. Its main catalyst is the driver's Ultra-long Voice Coil, that allows extreme linear excursion, phenomenal power handling and control, control, control.

Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.

A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.

An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.
 
Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".

Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Enclosure Specifications

Box Type
Represents the style of the enclosure. Be sure to purchase the appropriate enclosure type and internal volume that will be compatible with your subwoofer's recommendation.

Sealed - Sealed boxes are those that have no holes or vents in it. The only hole in a sealed box is where the subwoofer is installed. Smaller sealed boxes require more power than a larger sealed box. They provide a tight, accurate bass, while the larger sealed enclosures provide a "boomier" and louder bass.

Ported / Vented - Ported/Vented Enclosures provide an even boomier, louder bass, but less accurate then a small, sealed box. Ported enclosures typically require more airspace per sub and also less power output from an amplifier to perform correctly.

Bandpass - Bandpass enclosures make subwoofers perform efficiently, but loose. The bass is not as "boomy" as a ported enclosure nor as punchy as a sealed enclosure. Bandpass enclosures work well with lower to mid-level subwoofers.

Box Style/Shape
The box style or shape refers to the actual shape of the box. Square and rectangular boxes are straight-edged boxes on all sides, whereas hatchback and truck style enclosures feature an angled front or back design that allows for installation in places short on depth such as single cab pickup trucks. You can also use such enclosures in hatchback cars or other vehicles where space is a premium. Tube and cylinder shaped boxes were made popular by Bazooka and are a great option for those looking for a nice amount of bass without sacrificing lots of space. They may even fit in locations that slim truck boxes cannot fit in.
