Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Series
This designates the series of the amplifier. Many amps are available in a litany of different wattage and channel configurations, but maintain consistent features throughout the product line.
JAD (NVX)
Amplifier Class

An amplifier increases the power of the signal being fed to it by taking energy from its power supply and matching the signal but increasing its amplitude. Amplifiers use many different methods for converting these electrical signals and have been categorized into classes.

Class A/B: Greater than 50% of the input signal is amplified while the other percentage is “off”. These amplifiers have a small amount of current flowing through the output transistors all the time which almost eliminates crossover distortion. Class A/B has great sound quality but is not as efficient as class D. These amps are most commonly used to drive speakers.

Class D: Also known as switching amplifiers, class D amps have output transistors that are completely turned “on” or “off”. This means that when the transistors are on, there is almost no voltage across them but when they are off there is significant voltage but no current flowing through it which makes these amplifiers very efficient at the cost of sound quality. These amps are most commonly used to drive subwoofers.

Other Classes: You may see classes such as GH, bD, X, FD, etc. by some manufactures. These amplifiers tend to be either class A/B, D or a hybrid of the two but with improvements to their designs that can make them more efficient or offer better sound quality.

Number of Channels
Each channel on an amplifier will power one speaker using a positive and negative cable. There are various types of amplifiers, each designed to power a certain number of speakers. Monoblock amplifiers, also known as single channel, are designed to power one or more subwoofers. These amplifiers often have very high power ratings. On the other hand, multi-channel amplifiers power multiple speakers, usually at lower power ratings. 2-Channel and 4-Channel amplifiers can power car speakers or low powered subwoofers. Occasionally you might see a 5 or 6-channel amplifier that can power speakers and subwoofers at the same time. The most common setup is a monoblock amp to run subwoofers and a 4-channel amp to run door speakers. Check out our Knowledge Base for more information.

Total RMS Power Output
Total RMS power is measured by multiplying RMS power per channel by the number of channels, and is calculated at the lowest level of operating impedance.

RMS power is the amount of continuous power, measured in watts, that an amplifier produces is called RMS power. The higher the RMS figure, the louder and cleaner your music sounds.

The RMS output figure is much more accurate than the peak rating when comparing products.

Maximum Input Gauge Size
This is the largest gauge wire that will fit into the power and ground terminals of this device. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire is. For example, a 4 gauge wire is thicker than an 8 gauge wire and thus has higher current carrying capacity. Always do your best to get this size wire to reduce the risk of damage to your components.

Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.

Preamp Outputs
Many amplifiers are equipped with RCA preamp outputs which pass the original music signal from the source to additional amplifiers. This is known as daisy chaining because the source connects to the first amp, and the first amp connects to the second amp, etc. The advantage to daisy chaining is you only need one 2-channel RCA cable to transfer the signal from the head-unit to the amplifier, and then one additional cable for each amp being daisy chained.

Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

High-Pass Crossover Frequency
The high-pass crossover frequency can be a fixed crossover point or a variable crossover range. A variable high-pass crossover allows you to select a specific crossover point which allows frequencies above the set crossover point to pass, while making frequencies below the set point gently or harshly roll-off, depending on the steepness of the slope.

The steepness of the roll-off slope is measured in dB/octave and refers to the rate of attenuation (lowering of volume) outside their pass bands.

This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.

The objective of the bass boost is to get more kick out of your subwoofer. It is a circuit that emphasizes the lower frequencies at a given point. The bass boost should always be set first before setting the gain. This feature is known for destroying subwoofers and is commonly used incorrectly, so be cautious.

If the amp comes with a bass/gain remote you will be able to control the level of your bass from your dashboard. Typically bass remotes also include a 16-20 ft. wire for installation.

I have read that if you're going to mount an amp sideways that the fins on the sides need to be vertical. would it be bad to mount them horizontally? So in the case of this amp I would be mounting it as shown in the picture, with the long narrow sides (13"x2") facing up and down while the long wide side (13"x6") would face away from the wall it is being mounted on. The short narrow sides (2"x6") would be vertical and everything would be pretty well ventilated...

Best Answer: The mounting of the amp is not as important as how the amp is mounted. By that I mean giving proper air flow to the amp you don't want any tight space. When you mount the amp just make sure that it has proper airflow front back sides the best way for the back side where you and Mona 2 A/C box you and you need to use a spacer so it's not tight to it to allow proper air flow sometimes even mounting a fan for 9 bucks from RadioShack will make a huge difference in the performance and longevity of the amp

Best Answer: I'm not able to say anything about the alpine amp. But the nvx has done me well. I have 4 type s alpine speakers (2 component, 2 2-way) and a jl cp108 micro sub. Running from a Kentwood headunit. It powers everything perfectly. I actually hav to turn down the gain on the door speakers a bit because they're drowning out the sub. Could use a bigger sub. But I'm pleased with the overall sound. Would recommend this amp to anyone. Clean and powerful with a small footprint.

I have this exact amp but it tends to get really hot after about 5 minutes of play. It also gets hot even at zero volume. I have this hooked up to all my factory Logic 7 HK speakers in my w211. Any clue to why this is happening? Thanks

Best Answer: Not sure this would answer why his amp is getting so hot but couple things to consider or look at might include:
1) did you use appropriate gauge power and ground wire? I used 4 gauge.
2) are your speakers rated at appropriate impedance for this amp? I'm running Polk mm651 at 2 ohms.
3) have you adjusted your front, rear and subsonic levels or are they all jacked up all the way to the right? (200mV) reduce down if so.
4) did you mount your amp where it can breath and get some air flow?

My amp does not get hot.

Hello. Can anyone help me?
My question is - How does this NVX JAD900.5 amplifier compare to say the JL HD900/5 , Alpine PDX-V9, Arc Audio XDiv2 1100.5 in terms of car system electrical efficiency?
Does it pull current where I would need to upgrade my alternator & add a second battery. I once had the a JL HD900/5 and it pulled next to no current and I had a constant 14.0 v reading... is this NVX amp comparable? My car is a stock 2006 Honda Pilot . Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Best Answer: I have two of these amps, in separate vehicles,both running on stock alternator with only the stock battery. However each of those vehicles also have had the big 3 upgrade done which will make sure you charging system is the best It can be. They also both have good AGM batteries in them. I have not had any voltage issues, light dimming issue, or the like and they both read over 14v all the time. I think you will be fine with the big 3 upgrade and making sure everything else in the system is at its best. I added a link to NVX big three kit which should have what you need in it.

I only have one set of RCAs from my deck. Can I run the whole system with one set or do I need two in order for the sub channel to operate properly?

Best Answer: Hello Brian,

By "one set" I assume you mean one "Pair" (Just 1 Red & 1 White). Which will NOT work. Technically, you can split the RCAs, but that will Dramatically degrade the signal to the amp, and you will not get the desired performance. The fifth channel will - in theory - work with just a pair, but then you will NOT get signal to given pair of channels.
You have a few options to work around this.
1) A new headunit will be the easiest solution. Maybe not the most cost effective, but definitely the most practical.
2) Using a Processor or LOC. This will allow you to take the 4channels of HIGH LEVEL outs from your headunit, and convert them to RCA. Two Kicker KISLOC or one AudioControl LC7i. The KISLOC will be the Cheapest solution, but will only be "so-so" Sound Quality. The LC7i is a processor, so it will give you Superb SQ!
3) Using an Equalizer. EQs like the NVX EQ7 & Clarion EQS746 have the ability to take ONE input (like the Only one your headunit provides) and PROPERLY splitting that signal to give you THREE Channels (Front/Rear/Sub). In addition, it is obviously an EQ, so now you can fine tune the system as well.

Hello.

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot- all stock.

How efficient is this amp with a stock electrical system?

I am looking into this amp compared to the JL XD series but I am kinda broke. Does anybody have any advice on it working fine with my electrical system... I don't want to get a High Output alternator- would I need one with this amp?

Can somebody help?

Best Answer: To be honest, this amp is as eficient as it can be for the size. Compared to a 10yr old class A/B 75 x 4 channel and 420 x 1 class D I had before this amp, there's no more dimming lights anymore and the battery doesnt drain while tuning on accessory power for 30min. It does get hot, but not much.

Best Answer: The full range channels (for speakers) and subwoofer channel are separate so yes, you can hookup the system as you described.

Full range channels: 70W x 4 channels (for 4-ohm speakers) or 105W x 4 channels (for 2-ohm speakers)
Subwoofer channel: 210W x 1 channel (for 4-ohm subwoofer) or 380W x 1 channel (for 2-ohm subwoofer)

Best Answer: I have mine mounted on the back of my seat, I would Imagine upside down would be fine as there's no moving parts aside from the fan. It's a pretty small amp considering the 5 channels.

Best Answer: 8 " sub or for 8 subwoofers. 1. Either way any amp u set the gains all the way down to start.
2. Turn radio volume up to about 90 percent.
3. Start to turn up gains on amp starting with rear channels just to right before the diistortion kicks in.
4. Now do same for the front gain.
5. Now do the sub gain.
6. Now u have a starting point. U can lower the gains on ya channela to make the sound fealmore likesurround

Best Answer: Yes. The amplifier is stable at those impedances. Use high quality power wire, make sure you have a proper ground, and mount the amp where it will have ample clearance for cooling purposes...you shouldn't have any issues, Shane.

Best Answer: Hey Brad,

Possible? Absolutely. You can wire up infinite amount of amplifiers in a vehicle. The only limitation is the electrical load and physical space. There isn't anything fancy about wiring two 5-Channel amps, however. As such, there aren't any "diagrams" to provide - it is a very basic install. Simply pick up a Dual Amplifier Wiring Kit or Build one of your own. The NVX XAPK1D is a good example of what you need; A 0 Gauge main, a distribution block, and enough 4 Gauge wiring for for both power and ground for each amplifier respectively. Again, this is a very basic install, as you are just performing the install Twice over as you would for a "typical" install. We highly recommend consulting a hands-on professional if it gets beyond your comfort.

I recently purchased the NVX JAD900.5 and the PPI P65c3. Does it make sense to run the amp in bridge mode and have the PPIs running bridged on the passive crossover or switch to 4 channel mode, take the woofers off the passive crossover and on the amp's rear channel, with the mids and tweets still on the passive crossover using the front channel? The head unit is a Pioneer AVH-X4800. Thanks!
