Subwoofer Specifications

Subwoofer Series
Each subwoofer manufactured is part of a series. This is the name of the subwoofer's series.
Type-R (Alpine)
Subwoofer Size
Refers to the diameter of the subwoofer, measured in inches.
12"
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
3000 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
1000 watts
Voice Coil(s)
Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coils subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may also run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers as far as wiring goes.
Dual
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
4 ohms
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
24 - 200 Hz
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
85 dB
Xmax (millimeters)
Typically measured in millimeters, the Xmax value is the measure of a speaker cone's maximum excursion in one direction while maintaining a linear behavior.
20 mm
Subwoofer Design
This is the design of the subwoofer or the opening of the subwoofer enclosure. Each design has it's own benefits, whether it is a square, circle, or oval.

Round/Circle: This is the typical and common subwoofer design. They have a round cone and are a circle in design.

Square: These woofers are able to achieve a greater cone area in a smaller space. Because of the greater surface area, some square subwoofers will be louder than a round subwoofer of the same size.

Round / Circle
Main Cone Color
This is the color of the speaker's or subwoofer's cone.
Dark Gray
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Kevlar Fiber
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Santoprene Rubber
Subwoofer Grille
Most subwoofers are able to accommodate a universal grille; however, some subs include a grille and others have a specific, optional grille available for purchase separately. If "yes", then the subwoofer includes a grille. If "optional (sold separately)" the matching grille will need to be purchased in addition to the sub.
Optional (Accessory required and sold separately)
Re-Cone Kit Available
Some higher end subwoofers have replaceable cone assemblies. In case of a blown woofer, a recone kit allows for a simple replacement, as opposed to purchasing an entire new subwoofer.
No

Recommended Enclosure Specifications

Recommended Enclosure Type
This is the recommended type of enclosure that the subwoofer should be installed into. Some subwoofers are specially designed for particular enclosures.

Sealed: These enclosures completely enclose the air inside the box. These boxes produce a tight bass.

Ported/Vented: These enclosures have a slot of air to escape from the box. The result is a sound that has more "boom".

Bandpass: These are a combination of both sealed and ported enclosures. They can be very efficient, but require tuning for the best response.

Ported / Vented
Sealed
Minimum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
0.65 cubic feet
Maximum Sealed Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum sealed box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.25 cubic feet
Minimum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the minimum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
1.0 cubic feet
Maximum Ported Box Volume
This value indicates the maximum ported box volume that the manufacturer recommends for the subwoofer. The volume is typically displayed in cubic feet.
2.0 cubic feet
Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
6-3/8"
Cutout Diameter
The actual diameter of the hole you will need to cut out if you are creating a new mounting location for this speaker, or if you are mounting a subwoofer in a box.
10-13/16"
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

Already have one and it slams great, curious what two will do with a Audiopipe 15001D.

I have the older Alpine type R's and they are the loudest sub ive ever owned. Ive out pounded 15s with these 2 12's. They have the sound of a 15 but the reaction of a 10 inch subwoofer. The sound quality is beyond anything ive heard, if you want subs that pound and sound great while doing it these are the subs to get.
Draven B on Jan 7, 2016
I owned the 2nd gen type R for 9 years and it still works fantastic. Great sub period. The only reason I am replacing it is I need a new sub box and with the price so low to replace the sub as well I figured why not? There is not a better subwoofer value/performance on the market.

Best Answer: Ya it will push the Alpine good. The amp puts out a good amount of power. Sonic tested this amp and it puts out neer rated. I have one running two alpine 10" bass line subs and it seems to run them just fine. Not the best for SQ but it gets the job done and at a cheap price.

So, I just put two of these in the trunk of my 2005 Saturn Ion in a sealed box powered by a Pioneer GM-D9601 and I am wondering what the best gain and frequency settings would be? I would like them to hit hard at high volumes but I also want it to be crisp and clean and be able to hit the quick bass when its there. If it makes a difference, my head unit is the Power Acoustik PTID-8920B. Thank you in advance!

Best Answer: Hello CJ,

The Power Acoustik PTID-8920B doesn't provide the greatest signal, so your Gain will need to be turned up fairly high. The higher the gain is set, the lower the overall sound quality you are able to reach. This isn't a Terrible thing, 2v is a common figure, but we want you to understand that there is always room for improvement on the final outcome. We suggest setting your LPF, or "Freq", to ~80Hz. This will be roughly the half way point between 60-125Hz .

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures_new.php?id=63975&picture_id=2356780

Setting the gain, however, isn't as easy as just giving you a figure. Please do a bit of homework of your own to understand the setting. Below are two link to give you a headstart.

Each driver is asking for the same power . So we suggest two Monoblocks providing ~750w RMS @ 2ohms . Two NVX JAD1200.1 , one for each subwoofer, will work very well.

what would be the best amp for a set of swr-12d4 subs?
scott on Sep 1, 2014
Best Answer: I'm not 100% sure, but I have a 1000/1 jl mono block and it plays pretty good. No issues or blown subs yet. I'd stick with any amp that is 1000 watts or more just to be safe and have a little extra power incase you upgrade later. Don't get a amp with not enough power and cause distortion because of the amp not strong. I have those same exact subs and I know they say they can play 1k watts but I think for these speakers, it can't handle that power, I believe they're 600 watts rms, so a amp that has maybe 1200 watts or plus will treat you good. Hope this helps

Best Answer: Yes, however the sub pry will not require that much power. I run to 10d4s in my truck in a sealed box at 1200 watts between the two of them and its more than enough power. I also run the same set up with 2 12D4s in my ford edge in a labrynth ported box with the prime series 1200 watt fosgate and it hits hard as hell. I would try just the single 500 m class fist yhendecide from thrre

Best Answer: According to the specs of the SS EVO2200.2, it can power 2 Alpine swr-12d4. I got this amp pushing 2 Alpine SWS 10D4 at 2ohms, set to 75% of full amp power. I don't believe this amp is up to specs nor will handle 2 SWR-12D4. In summer, when i push these subs a bit(never at max) for an hour, my amp overheats. I would save money & get a better amp. I would not recommend this amp, just waiting for it to break to get a better one.

We highly suggest only using ONE MRP-M500 on ONE SWR-12D4. You will be getting the 2 ohm rating of 500W x 1 , which everyone knows is an underrated figure. Assuming that, you will be Very happy with the performance.

If I wire in 1 Ohm will this amplifier push 1000 watts a piece to 2 12" Type R's? If so is this a good idea and will it slam? I am currently pushing 2 12" rockford fostgates at 260w a piece and am severely unhappy with the lack of "bump". My highs over power the bass right now. I have an Alpine 4 ch amp pushing 4 rockford fostgage speakers that sound great but need more bass.

Best Answer: Hello,

You were rather vague in your inquiry, but we thing we can assume a few things.

Two Alpine SWR-12D4 wired in parallel to a 1ohm load, will get the 1ohm rating of the amplifier, and that power Will be split among the two subwoofers. So, yes, ~1000w per subwoofer.

Is it "a good idea"? We certainly don't think so, considering the Recommend power range is 250 - 750 watts RMS. "Will it slam"? That is a subjective question that we can't answer, but we can say 1500w+ is pretty big power numbers and considered "well above modest".

I purchased 2 Alpine SWR12D4 subs from you and I am wondering how do I wire them so I can run them at 1ohm since I have a 1800W mono amp that is 1ohm stable?
Scooby on Apr 24, 2015
Best Answer: It will not allow me to link you to any particular site... Do a Google images search for "4 ohm to 1 ohm diagram" and you should find images to help you on your way. I have these speakers also and I had them hooked up to a Zeus ZRX1800:1 Amp and these babies pump and are clear on the bass so its not just boom you hear but actual varying levels of beats and bass... Everyone tells me that its the clearest bass theyve ever heard. I turn heads wherever I go! B-) Trust me... You will not be disappointed!!! One helpful hint: Use a Stinger amp hookup that will handle the wattage(has to be thick wire) for it and you wont have to worry too much about power drain. See the one im using...

Best Answer: Hello,

That would be a question for Alpine. However, our Recommend power range for the SWR-12D4 is 250 - 750 watts RMS, which is right in line with the SWR-1522D. Moreover, we often advise AGAINST driving the SWR-12D4 with 1000w; just because it says it can, doesn't mean it should, which is why we have a recommended power range.

Best Answer: Hello,

We highly recommend getting into an amp that matches the QUALITY of the Type-R drivers. Power Acoustik is an entry level manufacture, so the performance will reflect that. To your question, unfortunately the amplifier is not CEA compliant so the figures are a bit too skewed to provide an honest answer. However, crunching the figures suggests that the amp can do ~1600w True RMS, which actually makes it a fairly good match for the SWR drivers, Numbers wise. Still, the quality just isn't on par to Alpine Type-R products.

what hits harder 2 Fosgate P3D4-12 or Alpine SWR-12D4 ?
A shopper on Sep 13, 2014
Best Answer: Hello,

Before giving you an answer, we Really hope you understand how general/vague/subjective your question is.

Assuming all things equal - power/environments/components/settings/etc... - the Alpine SWR-12D4 will have a slight edge. This has Nothing to do with power ratings - which the Alpine SWR-12D4 CANNOT hold 1k continuously - instead it is based specific specs. Of which, suggests the Alpine SWR-12D4's excursion will be further, and will reach lower frequencies.

benjamin on Aug 1, 2014
Best Answer: Hello Benjamin,

The BRX2400 is a traditional MONOBLOCK, that just happens to have an extra output for situations Just like this. You will simply wire EACH SWR-12D4 in Parallel, to a 2ohm final Load, then give EACH one its own channel. The amp will then bring the connections together INTERNALLY, and bring the impedance down to 1ohm.
If this is too confusing, then simply use ONE Positive and ONE Negative, and treat it as a traditional amp. Neither way is better than the other!!
Also, we highly recommend NOT going with the 2400 RMS model. That is waay to much power for these subs. 1000w RMS to each - despite what the manufacture's claims are - is also pushing the extreme but more tolerable.

Best Answer: Hello,

This is highly discouraged. There is no product that Boss makes to match the performance of the high end Alpine Type-R series. The Amplifier will run the drivers, but never to the potential that justifies the price and hype of the SWR-12D4.
Assuming the amplifier is really doing the figures it suggests (questionable because it is not CEA Compliant, and the price seems a bit suspicious) then you will require 0 gauge OFC wiring.
