    Amplifier Style
Some headphone amplifiers are designed to be portable and others are meant to be placed on a desk. This will tell you what style of amplifier this item is.
    Portable
    Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC)
A Digital-to-Analog converter (also known as a DAC) converts a digital audio signal into an analog signal. This is especially helpful for listen to music from digital sources, such as iPods and smart phones.
    No
    Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the amplifier will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
    10 - 100000 Hz
    THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
    <0.009%
    Input Connection
This is the manner in which the headphone amplifiers receive an input audio signal.
    3.5mm Mini-Jack
    Input Impedance
This is the input impedance of the headphone amplifier.
    16-300 ohms
    Output Connection
This is the manner in which the headphone amplifier will output the audio signal.
    3.5mm Mini-Jack
    Number of Outputs
Some headphone amplifiers have a built-in splitter so multiple pairs of headphones can be connected to it. The number specified here is the number of headphones that can be connected to the amplifier.

This is the required way to give the unit power. Common power sources are 120V AC (Common house plugs), batteries, or a combination of the two. If the headphone amplifier uses batteries, this will list the type of batteries that are required. Please refer to the description to find out how many are required for the unit to be properly powered.

    FiiO E6
Can the E6 be used as a preamp of sorts? Many of us have old a new stuff and want to try and combine them. Can I take the headphone jack/output from and mp3 player, send that mv signal to the E6, then come out of the output with a 3.5mm plug/cable which ends in L and R RCA plugs, then plug this into the CD input of an older stereo? Or do the same, use it as a preamp of sorts for the portable battery operated speakers, such as JBL's Charge, Xtreme, Flip, etc. My tablet has my music on it and I would prefer to keep its volume lower (as who knows how good a headphone amp have in the cheap tablets, and the distortion out of the headphone jack is probably pretty high at higher volumes, and I like my music LOUD, I'm 54 and grew up in the best music times. I hope I explained what I would like to do, essentially turn the tablet up halfway, hopefully distortion is minimal, and plug from the headphone jack to the E6 input, then out the other side letting E6 kick the volume up higher (and not turning up the tablet volume) and either listen to it on my receiver in the house with RCA plug inputs for the CD input, or plug into my portable battery powered speakers that have their own internal amp. Would this work? Concerns, thoughts issues? I don't know what the output mv of the tablet headphone jack is with the volume turned up to 80%,but distortion is probably high. What voltages are acceptable for putting into CD rca inputs? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best Answer: Whether the E6 can be used as a preamp depends on the sensitivity of the input circuit it is plugged into. I bought the E6 to use as a 'preamp of sorts' for a small Lepai amplifier I use for music in the garage shop. It worked - kind of: The output of the E6 was low enough that even cranked up full volume on both the E6 and the Lepai, the sound level was too soft to hear with any background noise whatsoever. You can't hurt the E6 by cranking up the output level full-blast, so give it a try: If it doesn't work, it doesn't work... and if it does, you're golden.
