The unique 7.7" diameter provides 20% more surface area, than the typical 6.5", therefore providing an increase in efficiency as well as the ability to play louder and cleaner at high volumes. Although these speakers require a slightly larger mounting hole, they are well worth the small modification for the amount of sound they can produce.
CCX (aka Cockpit Coaxial) models have woofers specifically designed for infinite-baffle ("free-air") applications. In plain english, this means that they are designed to operate without an enclosure. More specifically, the woofer design is optimized to operate with a large volume of air behind it (at least 2 cu. ft. / 57 l). The bass response of the speaker will suffer significantly if placed in a small enclosure, so make sure your system is planned accordingly. The M-Series is purpose-engineered and built for real marine duty and has been specifically designed to deliver maximum audio performance in any open-air boating environment. Although M770-CCX Coaxial Systems can be used with as little as 40 Watts per channel, for best audio performance JL Audio recommends amplifiers capable of between 75 - 150 Watts of continuous power per channel, like the JL Audio M400/4 or JL Audio MHD600/4.
A 1-inch pure silk dome tweeter handles the high-frequency duties. Silk has been chosen for its lightness, excellent damping properties and smooth response characteristics that ultimately result in extremely transparent crisp audio. You will appreciate the clean, articulate high-frequency response of the M-Series dome tweeter, especially at higher volume levels. The tweeter is specially treated to withstand the harsh marine environment, and is optimized to provide sound that will cut through even the most demanding of those marine environments.
Specifically engineered polymer baskets are corrosion and UV-resistant and encapsulate the woofer's motor system to prevent corrosion. The system's true 2-way passive crossover network is sealed within the protective capsule and mounted to the woofer's frame so that it does not require additional mounting provisions and is protected from the harmful elements. JL Audio utilizes Ultraviolet testing chambers (to simulate years of sun exposure) and Salt Fog chambers (to simulate years of exposure to salt-water environments to ensure that the M-Series not only sound great in your boat, but will also sound great for many, many years.

Finally something to be proud of
Replaced some old, top of the line 6 X 9 speakers I placed in the boat when new. I was nver really overly impressed with the sound but at least I had my tunes. When looking for replacement speakers, I again looked for the best speakers to fit the hole. The best 6 X 9 I could hope for was what I had already put in it years ago. I decided to get some starboard put a cover plate on the existing hole and try a round speaker. Again I looked for the best and chose these speakers...they did not disappoint. They sound so much better then previous (top of line poly planers) that I am putting off a new sub and amp (for a little bit). 6 months now they still look and sound great.

Best speaker out there
I have 2 pairs on a Hydra Sport 25. They sound great. Highly recommend to use with an amp. Sounds great cant go wrong with this..

These Rock
You can't beat JL marine products. I bought two pair, hooked them up to the M700/5 amp, added the 10" Sub and the system sounds amazing. They aren't the cheapest but if I could start over, I'd buy the exaxct same set-up again.
