Alesis two-track review

I already own one of these portable stereo recorders with built-in mics which is a Yamaha unit that originally cost $500 but I bought mine for about $130 years ago after it was discontinued. I figured out why it was discontinued most likely due to a nasty design problem that causes noise in the recording which I won't go into. Nevertheless I have made some amazing recordings with the device. So I really like these cool small recorders. I bought this Alesis unit because the price was so attractive and the bottom line is that it is well worth the price and a very valuable tool for anyone needing to do portable recording. Besides the great recordings you can get these are features found on my Yamaha unit and this Alesis product along with comments:

1. Battery life on a single AA battery. Appears you can get several hours of recording but make sure you have a spare battery with you always and use brand name alkaline batteries. The little red record led is always on when recording and this causes more battery drain. I can set to turn off the led on my Yamaha unit but I wish it had a setting to just fast blink he light every few seconds, which would have been good on this Alesis product as well.

2. mp3 format with many hours of recording. I put a 8 gig micro SD card in it (max size it will take by the way) and I think it says 160 hours of 128k format mp3 allowed. You can record at one 64k or 192k bit rate also or wav format. Probably in wav format you can divide that time by about 10 to something like 16 hours which is still a lot of you want best recording.

3. usb file transfer. So convenient and when you connect you see two external drives. One is the internal memory (only around 128megabytes I think) and the other is the SD card. In regards to the files however it is really unfortunate that the product does not allow you to set a date and time and then time stamps the files when you record. Because of this short coming you should take note of the file name when you record and make a note in your cell phone or on a piece of paper about what the file is about and when you recorded it. Can you imagine seeing a long list of 160 hours of recorded files in a directory listing and all have the same date on them? My Yamaha unit allows set of date and time and this is a very valuable aid in figuring out what the files are about. I use it to record lectures at school and it saves a load of time.

Ability to connect external mic. Very nice feature to have but I may never use. I probably will use it eventually though because I have a couple of stereo recording mics.

Ability to record in 'line level' from external source like mp3 player, computer, etc. This is also a very nice feature on this and my Yamaha unit. I have used it several times.

Threaded mounting hole for attachment to a standard camera stand. This is a huge cool feature in this product. I use this on my all the time on my Yamaha unit and frankly would resist buying any portable stereo recorder that does not have this feature. Trying to place a small unit like this somewhere good for hands-free recording is tough and possibly very threatening to the unit's safety and to your chances of getting a good recording. I got a collapsible camera stand (about $15 at Walmart) as a gift and use it all the time. The other cool thing about this Alesis product however is that it's sort shaped like, and about the thickness of, a microphone so I think it would fit into a standard microphone adapter on a mic stand although I have not tried it yet. Nice thinking on their part.

Display quality. The display is small but pretty nice because it does not wash out in sunlight when recording outside. Plus it has a backlight for indoor recording. The display turns off after a set number of seconds from 5 to 60, or you can set it to never go dim which will of course cause your battery to drain faster. When it goes dim it is difficult to see and you better be careful what button you hit if you want to check the record level, battery level or make sure it still recording. There are several buttons you can hit and it will stop recording which basically is any of the ones on the face of the unit. You can press any of the buttons on the right side (volume, delete or menu) to make he display light up again but unfortunately doing so is going to cause a noise to occur in your recording. DOn't hit the 'folder' button because puts the unit into AGC (automatic gain control) recording mode. Maybe including the ability to have the display come on for a couple of seconds at some settable periodic rate would have been nice.

User interface general comments. Really easy to initiate recording and playback. You press the red 'record' button in the center and it starts recording. If you are not ready to start recording and want to check record level first you press the right-arrow 'play' button to pause the recording. My Yamaha unit goes into pause mode first, which I like, then you hit the button a second time to initiate recording. I'll admit though I recently missed recording something due to not hitting the record button to go from pause to actual recording. So maybe instant recording is not such a bad thing.

GOOD BUT VERY LIMITED

I thought the product was easy to use but should have it's own volume source or headphones. I don't remember a manual. The recording when played back on my computer sounds great.

Good value

I ordered this recorder primarily for recording music from my cassettes and LPs into MP3 format. It's compact and easy to use, and makes decent quality recordings, with user-selectable bit rates. The only down side I've seen is the short battery life. It only does 15 or so songs before its AA cell runs out, which it does without warning. There is a battery charge indicator on the display, but it isn't consistent. I would have preferred that it have an AC adapter socket or use bigger batteries..
