Car Speakers Information

Upgrading your car speakers is a tried and true method to improve your sound system. A set of aftermarket speakers is able to handle a wider range of frequencies, giving the lower notes greater depth and making the higher notes sound more defined.

Aftermarket products are built with more durable and temperature resistant materials than the OEM (originally equipment manufacturer). For example, most auto speakers include a rubber or foam surround for enhanced durability.

Sonic Electronix’s selection includes various sizes of full-range 2-way, component speakers.

The most important figure when gauging a speaker's quality is sensitivity rating. A sensitivity or efficiency rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play given a set amount of input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power.

Selecting the Proper Speaker for Your Application

In order to select the proper set of speakers for your sound system, look at the RMS (root mean square) power-handling rating. The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely. It also refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. Sonic Electronix recommends giving speakers 75 - 90% of its recommended RMS rating to help prevent blowing your speakers.

Full-range car speakers – which contain all elements in one for lows, mids and highs feature a woofer and tweeter both molded into the speaker. Some include midrange drivers.

In contrast, component systems feature separate woofers and tweeters. This allows you to mount the tweeters in an optimal location for generating a more realistic sound. They also have midranges and external crossovers, which send separate frequencies to the woofer and the tweeter for a more efficient reproduction.
