The Legendary Clarion EQS746

When your vehicles EQ settings aren't good enough, the Clarion EQS746 is there to satisfy. This advanced rotary equalizer will provide 7 band of equalization and sound customization. At each of the band centers, a 12 dB boost/cut is offered to precisely adjust the frequencies of each band. It also features a dedicated subwoofer level output for enhanced subwoofer control. On the back, there is an auxiliary input for playing an additional audio source. The Clarion EQS746 comes with brackets for mounting underneath a dash, in a console, or anywhere else that it fits. For an ideally tuned system, the Clarion EQS746 equalizer can tune a system where other equalizers fall short.

Equalizer Specifications

Type of Equalizer
This determines the way the equalizer processes the signal from the source unit. A parametric equalizer allows to you adjust the center point of the frequency band you are adjusting as well the bandwidth which can be narrowed or widened. A graphic equalizer has fixed frequency bands and bandwidth and only the frequency bands can be adjusted. A digital equalizer uses a software program to tune your system.
A graphic equalizer typically has more adjustable bands and is less expensive, whereas a parametric will have fewer bands but offer a greater level of control and provide more tuning options. Digital equalizers will tune your system with the most detail and precision but require a computer and are typically a little higher in price.
Equalizer Bands
The number of graphic or parametric equalizer bands the receiver has. The better the EQ, the more likely you will be able to "tweak" your sounds to your desire.
Equalizer Frequencies
The frequency range that allows control of the center frequency of each equalization band.
Built-in Crossover

A crossover is a type of filtering system that permits only certain frequencies to play. A Low-Pass (LP) crossover allows only frequencies below its setting to get through which is good in the case of some subwoofers. A High-Pass(HP) filter allows frequencies above its setting to pass through, this is normally used on speakers.

When a crossover is set to FULL it means no filtering is added and the full frequency spectrum is allowed through the amplifier. Filtering is important because feeding a speaker frequencies it cannot reproduce effectively creates distortion.

Built-in Bass Reconstruction
Bass reconstructors, or bass enhancers, improve low frequency reproduction in a car audio system with at least one subwoofer. These bass expander products will help your subs produce accurate bass thumps.
Line Driver
A line driver is a small amplifier used to support the strength of the audio signal coming from the source unit.
Speaker Level Inputs
Speaker level inputs are commonly referred to as high-level inputs and vice versa. This input type allows you to get your audio signal directly from the speaker wire in your vehicle, instead of using RCA cables. The advantage of this is factory integration, as most stock radios do not have RCA outputs to run amplifiers.
Total Number of Inputs
This is the total number of input connections that go into the unit.
Total Number of Outputs
This is the total number of output connections that the unit will produce.
Display Color
The display color refers to the color of the text and or graphics on the receiver.

Multi-Color: When more than one color is on the display, for example one part of the text is white, while the other part is blue.

Variable-Color: The display colors can be changed by the user. If the default color of text/display is blue for example, the user can change the settings to where the color turns to red. Variable color displays are typically described in detail in the item's description.

TFT-LCD Display: In-dash receivers with a video screen that display multiple colors and often times video such as DVD, navigation or other video sources.

Button Color
Refers to the color of the physical buttons on the unit.
Signal Boost/Cut
The available signal boost or cut for each of the frequency bands.
Max Output Level
The maximum level (in volts) of signal output. A higher level will increase the clarity and boost your signal.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
Width
The width of the item from left to right (side-to-side) measured in inches.
Height
The height of the item, measured from top to bottom, in inches.
Depth
The front-to-rear depth of the item, in inches. If the item is angled or slanted, this value is the bottom measurement.

Should there be any problem if i install it on a BMW built in stereo?
A shopper on Dec 29, 2014
Best Answer: I would imagine there would be a problem. Because you need RCA outs from your stock stereo to the Clarion. If you do have those you will also need RCA out to & from the Clarion as the Clarion does not have raw speaker wire outputs.

i just bout the Farenheit TI-103B Single DIN. everything works but i have to turn the headunit all the way up to hear it. it doesnt get loud am i doing something wrong or is it not meant for loud playing?
mario s on Aug 18, 2015
Best Answer: That's a $170 radio putting out 17 watts RMS/52 watts max. It'll be able to make some noise even out of factory speakers. If there is no internal problem with the head unit, I would be looking at the amplifier if is one installed. Maybe it's not wired correctly or needing some further adjustments .

does this come with power and ground wires? if not what size wire do I need?
A shopper on Sep 11, 2015
Best Answer: It does not come with wire. Only the power plug with screw-down terminals. 12-14 gauge should fit. (I bought this but I'm not using it. I was disappointed in its performance. Should have bought the more expense WetSounds model instead.

I just want my factory radio to sound better.I have the eq already is it pointless to add eq with no 4 channel amp?
Robert B on May 7, 2016
Best Answer: Hi. Adding an equalizer into the sound stream can never be a bad idea. Even without an amplifier; an equalizer can still provide you with more control over your sound dynamics. No, it is not pointless to add an equalizer without an amplifier. Even without an amplifier; you will still notice the benefits of adding an equalizer to your mix.

i have a 2009 malibu LT using the stock radio can i use this eq with this ,,,,and will it make a difference in sound ?
troy L on Apr 17, 2016
Best Answer: This Clarion EQ will make your system sound better than ever. It has a separate woofer output so your mids and highs don't sound so muddy. It also has three nobs to dial in your bass with a woofer(signal level)a fader a sub (50hz-90hz) and a low which affects some of the full range signal but mostly the woofer sound. This eq has left and right inputs which can be fadded front to back, this is not however true stereo with four separate channels. This is left and right only.

I have four rca outputs coming from the head unit two are front and two are rear outputs, if i connect either to the main and aux inputs at same time Will this work ? Will both inputs work even if aux input button is pushed in?
Rig002 on Mar 9, 2016
Best Answer: Sorry dude it is only a stereo input on either channel. That is, you can only have a left and right signal from either your front or rear channels of your head unit to The Equalizer. Clarion hasn't figured out that most people want to have a full stereo experience from head unit all the way through the equalizer to the amps. Unfortunately, they don't build one that has a true 4 channel input.
I have solved this problem by purchasing a second Clarion equalizer to handle the other channels.
Also, the auxiliary button doesn't activate both inputs at the same time. That's mainly for some old school CD player or MP3 player input.

i have the Clarion EQS746 1/2 DIN, how do you tune your sub amp with this installed?
mario s on Aug 11, 2015
Best Answer: What I usually do is i have my bass knob on the eq at a volume that I can hear my sub then i just tune my amp the way yu normally do. Yu would tune your amp the way yu normally do amd just use that knob as a bass gain on the eq

How do connect my Pioneer MVH-X560BT to the equalizer to control the four speakers coming out of the Pioneer MVH-X560BT? I also have 2 6x9 speakers powered by a separate amplifier (SSL EV2.200) that i want to control with the equalizer as well.

Best Answer: Hello,

This setup is very common and very simple.

Audio:
1) From the headunit's FRONT output >> EQs MAIN Input . (YES, you are only meant to use ONE set of RCAs)
2)EQ FRONT outputs >> Amplifiers Inputs ...Done.

The remaining outputs on the EQ are now your MAIN outputs that you can use for any amplifiers you are going to add in the future...or not at all.

Could I hook this up to a 12v 2amp dc wall adapter to run on a computer sound system?
josh v on Feb 12, 2015
Best Answer: I don't see why not. Its just an equalizer. Couple things to consider, output voltage is maximum 7 volts I would make sure this coincides with your speakers. And 2. I don't see a power consumption in amps anywhere but 2 amp sounds good.
