A megapixel is 1 million pixels.

It is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras. Also the number of display elements of digital displays. For example, a digital camera with 3264 x 2448 sensor elements is commonly said to have 8 Megapixels. This is because 3264 x 2448 = 7,990,272.

Color Modes
This is the number of color modes that the digital camera has. The more color modes, the more you are able to customize the pictures that you take. These include image adjustments and filters such as "Black and White" and "Sepia".

Exposure Features

Selectable Sensitivity (ISO)
The cameras sensitivity is indicated by the ISO rating. This ISO rating indicates the digital cameras sensitive to light. The higher the sensitivity, the less light is required to make an exposure.

Most cameras will have an "Auto ISO" setting to adjust the light sensitivity automatically. More advanced cameras will have the options to manually adjust the ISO.

Auto ISO
Shutter Speed
This is the cameras range of shutter speeds. The speed is measured in seconds.
30 - 1/4,000

An aperture is a hole or an opening in an object through which light can enter. In digital cameras, the aperture can be adjusted and controlled to determine just how much light reaches the film or the image sensor.
2.7 - 8
White Balance
White balance is a color balance technique that adjusts the colors of the image. It is used to help the colors of the image accurately reflect the color of the original scene. Digital cameras will give the options for AWB (Auto White Balance), preset white balance settings, and a custom adjustable white balance setting.

Optic Features

Lens Type
This is the type of lens that the camera has. Some lens are better for some activities than other lenses. For example, a macro lens is made specifically to focus on images close up. Many manufacturers use there own lens types and are often creating new lenses for their cameras.
Carl Zeiss Lens
Digital Zoom
The amount of digital zoom refers to how many time the camera will zoom in on an object digitally. This generally involves digitally cropping an image while keeping the same aspect ratio.

When looking for a quality zoom camera, it is better to look for a great optical zoom than a digital zoom. A optical zoom maintains the detail of the zoomed image, whereas the digital zoom can lower the quality if zoomed in to much.

2 x
Optical Zoom
The optical zoom on a camera is the best way to zoom in on an object. This will increase its size on the final image.

The optical zoom is the most accurate choice for zoom as it will keep the quality of the object as one is zooming in on it.

15 x
Automatic Focus
Automatic focus means that the camera or lens will focus on the objects automatically, instead of manually adjusting the lens. This is a convenient feature that makes taking pictures and working with lenses much simpler and easier.
Manual Focus
Manual focus means that the lens is able to be focused by hand according to the user. This feature is best for those that want to have complete control of what they are photographing, viewing, or displaying.
Macro Setting
A macro setting on a camera enables it to be able to focus on objects that are very close to the camera. Taking pictures with a macro setting is often referred to as close-up photography.

Specialty Features

Built-In Flash
This feature means that the camera has a flash built-in. A flash is a bright artificial light that is flashed instantaneously at an object to illuminate it. There are many purposes used for using a flash, but the most common is that of adding light to an object that does not have enough on its own.
Connection Type
How the unit is connected to its source to send and receive information and data.

On some items such as wire or cables, this specifies how the cables connect to transfer the signals.

USB 2.0
Video Recording
Video recording means that the item is capable of capturing moving images.

In the case of digital cameras, video recording means that the camera can double as a video camera. Usually the quality of the video is not the highest resolution, it is still good quality.

Audio Recording
Audio recording means that the item is able to record an audio track without a paired video track.
Image Stabilization
Image Stabilization is technology that results in a clear and not blurry image. The image stabilizer allows the camera to steady itself, even when the user holding the camera has shaky hands.
Self Timer
Self timer is a setting that is often found on digital cameras. It allows the user to set a timer before the camera takes the picture. This allows the person taking the picture to be in the picture as well. Some cameras will have different time settings of how long it will wait before the picture is taken.
Burst Shot Capability
Burst Shot Capability means that the camera will allow the user to take multiple pictures one after the other in a very fast manner. This is ideal for sporting events when events happen very quick and a precise picture is desired.
Direct Print Capable
Direct print capable means that the digital device (such as a digital camera) will connect directly to a compatible printer without the use of a computer. Once connected the device and the printer will be able to print pictures. The most common type of direct print interfaces is PictBridge.
Yes (PictBridge)
The majority of cameras on the market have a viewfinder used to frame the object before the picture is taken. Some of the newer cameras do not have a traditional viewfinder, but only have a LCD display to preview the object before the picture is taken.

This will identify whether or not the object has a viewfinder.

Date and Time Stamp
Some cameras and camcorders will feature a date and time stamp. This feature means that the camera will mark on each picture (whether visual or digitally) the time and day that the picture was taken.
