The ATH-R70x is Audio-Technica's first pair of open-back reference professional headphones. Together with the ATH-M70x, they stand as a flagship model in A-T's lineup of professional studio headphones. Featuring specially designed drivers and acoustically transparent housings fashioned from aluminum honeycomb mesh, these headphones provide an accurate and natural open-back sound. They also incorporate a new, improved design of our popular 3D wing support system to provide even greater comfort during the prolonged use often required in professional settings. Robust yet lightweight, and equipped with a unique, dual-sided detachable cable that automatically maintains proper stereo orientation (no matter how it's attached), the R70x headphones are built for lasting comfort, convenience and audio purity.
The ATH-ES88 closed-back dynamic headphones offer high-quality features that result in an elevated combination of detailed audio playback, portability, comfort and styling. CCAW bobbin-wound voice coils, high-density aluminum housings and an integrated high-rigidity baffle produce crisp, detailed sound, with a wider frequency response. Designed for added comfort and convenience, the earcups swivel for a custom fit, and you'll appreciate the flat, tangle-free cable.

One of my favorite headphones!
These headphones are awesome! I have had the opportunity to try out a very wide variety of headphones ranging from the consumer level all the way up to the professional studio level and the Audio Technica ATH-R70X are definitely a solid set. The headphones are very comfortable and lightweight that sometimes after long periods of listening I forget that I am even wearing them. I like that these headphones do not have as much sound leakage as most open back headphones and have great dynamic range. The lows, mids and highs are super clean and precise with a well balanced sound stage. I would definitely recommend using an amplifier to get the most out of these headphones.

The headphones sound good. I'm a big fan of the sound. very spacious, detailed, and open. They are very enjoyable to listen to. The winged headband fitment design looks freaking weird, but actually makes a lot of sense. They are lightweight, put low pressure on the head, are really comfortable, and don't mess up my hair like other headphones. Yeah, I worry about my hair. I'm sick of wearing headphones that are heavy and leave a big divot in my hair right before I walk into a work meeting.
I highly recommend these headphones. The price was a little high for what I was accustomed to paying for headphones, but I have no buyers remorse. 100% worth it.
PROS
- They are open back so the sound is more spacious and clear. This is the sound I prefer.
- Very comfortable.
- Detachable cables
- Headband fitment "wings" are lightweight and don't mess up my hair
CONS
- They are open back so all my co-workers hate me when I listen loudly.
- The detachable cables are proprietary to Audio Technica... which means expensive replacement or finding some other off-brand that is cheap
- Higher impedance so an amp is preferred (I use the Apogee Groove on my Mac. its legit)
