Looks nice on dash. Freezing navigation and frustrating user interface
Installed in a 2007 Camry with JBL sound. Unit looks nice, but has several issues. SonicElectronics gracefully has agreed to let me return it and buy another Kenwood unit. They have promised a full refund upon the return of this unit. They also recommended the needed parts to install the Kenwood unit (which is double DIN) to my Camry.
Good part:
Looks like factory fit on the dash. No complaints on appearance in the car. Installation was little difficult due to limited space on the back of the unit (inside dash). But, was doable. Specifications said it needs ASWC harness to get steering wheel controls to work. But, surprisingly, I did not have to use it (I had one with me). Steering wheel controls work with this unit + AXXCESS harness (TYTO-01) and nothing else needed.
Navigation system shows it is getting good signal (all bars green).
Bad part:
1. Navigation.
- Sometimes it shows I am going parallel to the actual road (even with all green bars, and satellite info showing 7 satellites are detected).
- Freezes frequently when I tried to go into navigation menu (to change destination or add another point on the route or change preferences (voice, prompts etc.,). This happened about 4-5 times in 4 days. Only solution is to stop the car, turn off and turn on. Sometimes pressing the reset button works, but you would have lost all your settings (radio stations etc.,).
2. MP3 listening
- Directory listing takes half the screen. Actual MP3 tags are not displayed properly. It shows first 6-7 characters of the tag. Screen is filled with useless information while music is playing. I listen to lot of classical music where ID3 tags in mp3 files have useful information for me. This unit does not show that properly. Basically shows first word or so.
- Fast forwarding requires you to touch the top of the screen to get access to
