Not impressed
After using this unit, I was overall unsatisfied with the device.
Pros
- Good user interface (look and response to commands)
- Good sound from speakers and EQ settings. Only 3 band EQ, but parametric makes for smooth transition.
- Alphabetized track titles on iPod search. Some models (Sony and others) still don’t alphabetize, but just display the list in the order on the device, which happens to be grouped by artist. If I wanted that, I’d search by artist.
Cons
- Bluetooth phone was terrible. One of the main reasons for this unit for me was hands-free calls, and every call I made was followed by the person on the other end saying, “What? I’m sorry, I can’t hear you. You sound really far away.” Once I changed to the phone, “Oh, that’s better.” Tried different mic positions, and there are only 3 mic gain settings, no echo/noise cancelation settings on the unit. Tested this on a different head unit, much better quality. Not sure if this can be fixed with software, or if it is just a bad mic. Additionally, other models (Sony/Jenson) have touch pads for calls when you need to press 1, for voicemail for example, but not this model. The phonebook also was unable to determine the caller ID if the number didn’t exactly match the phonebook entry.
- This is a problem I’ve noticed with other head units, and it happens on this head unit as well. When you set a preset station, the station will briefly show the station frequency, and then start streaming the station data on the preset button as well as across the designated area at the top of the screen. This is fine, until you change stations, and the preset button no longer shows what radio station is it set to, instead the display on that button freezes on the last set of characters that was showing for that station info. This could be a fraction of a song title, artist, or when the transmission is messed up, it might show nothing at all. So, when you’re curious what preset 5 is, you look down and it’s “etroit Ro”.
I didn’t try the Satellite radio since I didn’t have the proper accessories. I have a Saturn Vue 2008, and the PAC audio adapter and Steering Wheel controls worked very well to install this and my other radio. For my particular car, however, I was not able to retain factory XM radio functionality. The PAC provides 2 audio RCA plugs (L/R) for the XM, but I am unable to change the stations, so it just stays on the preview station for XM.
After using this unit, I was overall unsatisfied with the device.

I bought this receiver after reading about its RGB input. It is used to set a navigation box. Ok, when installing the receiver, I realized that the receiver's RGB connector is a proprietary one. Searching the net, I did not find any information about this connector. At JVC store, no RGB cable. Emailed JVC support and they said to me that my receiver does not have RGB input (???). But it does! JVC doesn't know that, but their receivers AVX748/AVX740/AVX640 do have RGB input. This input is useless if you cannot find a cable, or any information about the pinout diagram. So, if you want this receiver because of its RGB input, look elsewhere.
