The adapter does sound fine when I can get a HD signal. The method for obtaining an acceptable signal does not seam to correspond with how the modern auto receives a standard radio. The external antenna IS needed to get any HD signal. This antenna needs to be placed near the cars antenna. The HD signals drop much more readily than the analog FM signal fade. If I were always in close proximity to the many FM transmitters in my general area the JVC KV-K1018 would be ideal.
