Kappa: The Essence of Infinity

This Infinity Kappa 682.9cf is the essence and trademark of Infinity car audio. With all the high-end engineering and technology that goes into each Kappa speaker, you will sure that you are receiving only the highest quality components. Made with a woven glass fiber woofer cone, which contributes to low cone flex, low distortion, and enhanced acoustic clarity. Due to the increased power handling of the Kappa series, the Kappa 682.9cf feature edge-driven MMD dome tweeters that allow for a seamless sonic integration between the tweeter and the mid-woofer. Using the latest in loudspeaker engineering, each of the crossovers has computer optimized voice-matched outboard passive crossovers for flawless performance.

Unipivot: Staging Made Easy

The Infinity 682.9cf features a patented Unipivot tweeter design that ensures proper imaging when the speakers are installed. With the tweeter capable of being moved, it is positional and rotational even after the final screw secures the speaker in the door. Since most speakers are installed low in the door, the Unipivot design brings the soundstage up to the listener for more accurate and enjoyable experience. Each of the Kappa coaxial speakers, such as the Infinity Kappa 682.9cf feature adjustable tweeter level control. This switch will adjust the tweeters output by 3 dB. That simple tuning can make all the difference in your system and it ensures that your Kappa speakers will deliver exactly the sound that you are looking for.

True Four Ohm Technology

The engineers at Infinity have developed a speaker that works for all applications. The True Four Ohm Technology used in these speakers make it perfect for running directly of a headunit or with an aftermarket headunit and amplifier. All of the speakers in the Infinity Reference line feature a 2 ohm voice coil. However, when you factor in the small OEM speaker wire of most vehicles and the heating in the voice coil during use, the impedance actually seen by the amplifier will increase. Infinity has adjusted the speaker to be safely connected to any headunit.

Speaker Specifications

Series
This is the manufacturer product line of speakers.
Priced Per
Car Speakers are typically sold in pairs so you will receive 2 speakers for each speaker purchase on speakers marked "Priced Per Pair". If a speaker is marked "Priced Per Each" then the speaker is sold individually and each purchase you make will result in 1 speaker. High-powered tweeters, midrange and full-range pro audio for car speakers are typically sold per each speaker.
Speaker Size
Refers to the size of the speaker measured in inches. Every vehicle has standard application sizes. Please use our vehicle fitment guide for your vehicle's specific speaker sizes if you do not know them.
6-1/2" (also mounts in 6-3/4" w/ included brackets)
Design
The number of individual drivers in a car speaker. Speakers with 2 drivers are known as a 2-way, and 3 drivers are known as a 3-way. Component systems are often referred to as "separates" because the tweeter is not attached to the midwoofer (main speaker driver) and mounts separately in a location such as a door post. Component systems typically come with an external crossover so you can easily adjust the high and low frequencies sent to both the midwoofer and the tweeter. Center channel speakers are great for those looking to have surround sound in their vehicle.
2-way
Tweeter Design
Designs such as cone, dome, semi-dome, balanced dome, and whizzer are most popular. Cone tweeters are simple, efficient and typically are the most reasonably priced. Dome tweeters are used in most home speakers, and provide a smoother and more accurate sound. Semi-dome design is one with a dome placed inside a cone. A Balanced dome driver is a semi-dome with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the driver. A whizzer tweeter is a separate tweeter cone driven by the voice coil of the woofer.
Dome
Tweeter Size
Refers to the size of the tweeter. Typically, smaller tweeters produces less output with higher frequency response.
Tweeter Composition
Materials such as polypropylene, silk, cloth, and paper are the most common, where as many more recent tweeters are now manufactured with composites such as Aluminum, Titanium, Mylar, and other materials.

PEI is an acronym for "Polyetherimide" which is an amorphous, amber transparent, high-performance thermoplastic.

M.M.D. (Metal Matrix Diaphragm)
Woofer Composition
Lightweight woofer cone materials are essential for efficient operation. Poly cones produce exceptional sound and are sturdy against various changes in temperature. Paper cones are very efficient, and when treated for moisture resistance, will perform at a high level. Poly refers to polypropylene, which is thermoplastic or fibers that are polymers of propylene. IMPP refers to injection molded polypropylene, a commonly used process and material in speakers.
Woven Glass Fiber
Woofer Surround
A speakers surround is part of the suspension system. The surround protects the cone and prevents it from being displaced as it flexes out from the basket. It is usually made of a durable material like treated foam or rubber in order to withstand the strenuous job of producing bass frequencies.
Rubber
Peak Power Handling
Peak power handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. The RMS power range figure is a much more reliable rating for determining the speaker's power requirements. The Peak power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
225 watts
RMS Power Handling
The RMS power is the amount of power the speaker requires to operate safely and properly. RMS Power Handling refers to the amount of power a speaker can handle on a continuous basis. We recommend powering your speakers or subwoofer with 80%-120% of its recommended RMS rating. The RMS power handling specification is typically rated per speaker unless otherwise noted.
75 watts
Sensitivity
An efficiency or sensitivity rating tells you how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. The higher the number, the more efficient the speaker and the louder it will play with the same input power. An efficient speaker helps you maximize your available power. Most sensitivity ratings measure the speaker's output with 1 watt of input, 1 meter from the speaker. Some speakers' sensitivity is measured with 2.83 volts of input, instead of 1 watt.

Efficiency (1w/1m) is not an accurate indicator of a subwoofer's output capability and should not be used as a comparison to other speakers or subwoofers to determine which one is "louder".
95 dB
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the speaker will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
45 - 25000 Hz
Impedance (Per Voice Coil)
The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier per voice coil - the amount of resistance to the current flow. This is a key specification as subs wired in parallel or low impedances can create problems with your amplifier and potentially void all warranties. We encourage you to ask our support department prior to purchase if you do not understand which impedance level will suit your application best.
2 ohms
Shallow Mount Installation
This means that the subwoofer/speaker is designed to be installed in areas that do not have a lot of space. Shallow mount subwoofers are typically found under a seat or behind the seat in some trucks.

Shallow mount speakers will typically have a mounting depth of 2" or less, while shallow mount subwoofers will typically have a mounting depth of 3" or less.

Top-Mount Depth
The depth when installed on top of the mounting surface. Measured from the bottom of the speaker's magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes on the rim of the speaker.
2-3/8"
Cutout Dimensions
Refers to the dimensions of the hole, measured in inches, required to contain the speaker.
Cutout Dimensions
Refers to the dimensions of the hole, measured in inches or millimeters, required to contain the speaker.
6-1/8" x 6-1/8"

Great Sound

April 10, 2010

Great Sound Overall, like the ability to tone down the high's using the db boost button on the tweeters. Running off head unit at the moment, crystal clear up to about 65% volume. Definitely needs an amp to see full potential, wiring up a Infinity Reference 4 chan to do that job, have high hopes for SQ out of these little coaxials. Picked these up a couple days ago, apparently was on sale because now I see the price is 30 dollars more than what I payed. Definitely worth picking up if your not in the market for components. And for those of you wondering about using the HU to power them since they are 2ohms, I have a kenwood x993 and it does a good job of it, headunit does not run any warmer than normal pushing these 2 ohm speakers. Plan on adding a set of the kappa 6x9's in the next couple of weeks.

Great Sound and Great Value

September 9, 2009

These speakers have great high's and the bass is better than expected.I installed these in the front doors of an 06 honda civic and they sound great just on the head unit power. The install was a little more time consuming than expected, as they did not just drop in, but everything worked out.

Not a bad speaker but no base whatsoever

January 23, 2013

I would recommend this speakers for its quality and highs, but if you are looking to have some bass as well then this is not the speaker you want. I installed them to replace my bose speakers after one of them blew out after 10 years of use and had to take them back out because the bass was way too low. I had read that this was the case with these speakers on other reviews but didnt think it would be as bad as it was with the bass. Anyway the speakers are of excellent quality if you are looking for crisp, clean highs.

Very Nice

October 22, 2012

The speakers are clean and clear. These are a far cry from the oem speakers! They can hit high and they can hit low. The only issue I've noticed is when it is trying to hit low and mid at the same time the mid hits and the low gets muddied. I recommend buying with the infinity sub to keep the lows off the woofer. Also they look very nice and have pods for attaching wires making them super easy to hook up.

Excellent Speaker

September 19, 2012

Put these in the doors on my 2001 Camaro SS with the monsoon system. My stock passenger side door speaker started popping/crackling/etc and I replaced them with the Kappa's. The difference was amazing. The sound was so much more clear and the highs were nice and crisp. If you have a monsoon system, don't be afraid to run these speakers with the stock setup. Not only are they the correct ohm setup for the stock amp, they fit perfectly. It's amazing how much a small upgrade in speakers can do for a stock system. (I didn't get an entire sound system because I race the car and didn't want to add a bunch of weight so I just bought new speakers with the stock AM/FM/CD and amp and it sounds worlds better than before)

Great sound

August 30, 2012

I have four of them in the doors of a pathfinder, and they are just now starting to break in only after a few months.they sound great even with just a head unit. Eventually I plan to install a four channel amp, because I was told that more power would make them sound even better.

Don't buy

June 10, 2012

I don't recommend because it sounds great at first but after 2 weeks, all the cables are getting poopy. All the plugs in the speakers come from one spot and they are all attached to each other. I installed them without problems but after 2 weeks, no more sounds, i took a look and all the plugs were scratched and there was no way I could repair it.

Now these are infinity!

May 29, 2012

Bought two sets of these for my new Kia Optima. They're being pushed by a Rockford 4x75watt boosted rail amp. They sound great for highs, mids and some lows. I will be adding a sub soon to round it out. I highly recommend Kappa's.

Excellent quality speakers by infinity but...

February 21, 2012

I have purchased infinity speakers for a while now. I like their design with the built-in crossover for easy installs. I originally had the infinity kappa 62.9i for the front speakers which were fine I just had to use the adapter rings that comes with the speakers to mount to the doors. My door trim was touching the rubber speaker surround and caused both to tear. So I bought these slightly bigger speakers which unfortunately did not fit right to the door frame as hoped. But with some modifications and ingenuity they fit better than the smaller infinity ones and sound just as infinitys should. Excellent!

Sound great

February 20, 2012

Ive had alot of 6.5s over the years and these rank as well as the high end stuff when wired up to decent wire and amp. They are 2.6 ohm and do not sound as well on deck power and factory wire.

Great speakers under a $100!

February 20, 2012

Love em! Could not be happier for the price I paid. These sound great without an amplifier. But when you give some power to them, dang! These things scream. Awesome lows, mids, and highs. If your looking for a factory replacement or even planning your next killer system go with these you wont be disappointed!

Acceptable replacement for car speakers

February 19, 2012

I had to replace the door speakers in a 1998 Firebird with 2 ohm stock speakers that are no longer available. These worked nicely as replacements. I can't really rate the durability as these are only about 6 months old.

Simply Amazing, and Unbelievable.

January 9, 2012

I installed these today in my 95 Civic's rear deck. I have them powered by a Polk Audio PA660 on an Alpine 9886. I had some Pioneer 5way 6x9s in boxes which I thought were great speakers until I installed these. I still can't believe how much Detail I'm hearing from my old favorites. It makes me feel like I'm hearing these songs for the first time. Don't be concerned w/ them only being 2 way speakers because they have crisp and clear high without being ear piercing. I'm still not sure if they are metal, or softdome tweeters but they have the brightness of a metal tweeter but the silkyness, warm, smoothness of a softdome. I'd had Kappa speakers in the past I can't remember the models but these are the best I've ever owned. My all time favorites were the Kappa of the late 90s w/ the white dot looking tweeter, these new ones make the older speakers sound ancient. The tweeters simply rotate around so you can focus the awesome sound they make where you want. I also love the speaker terminals as they are in the inline crossover. The screwheads are Philips so you're not having to hunt up an Allen wrench to install these. They allow for very solid connections w/ a very large wire. I have true 16ga ran throughout my entire vehicle and these look like they could handle 8-10ga which would be way overkill. I measured the resistance again after allowing them to warm up and my Fluke is reading 2.3ohms. I have Kenwood Components in the front which read 2.5ohms so my Polk PA660 should be able to deliever 85watts to each driver. I never have to increase the volume past 15 out of 35. So I'm not giving them somewhere around 35-40watts and they continue to make my ears thirst for more. I couldn't be any happier w/ this purchuse and if you're in the market for some high quality, clean, easy to install speakers ... Look No Further! I always recommend using an external amp, and ALWAYS use baffles when installing speakers. You will save the life of the speaker, and you will allow the speaker to sound like it's suppose to. Having a speaker just mounted in an open door/reardeck will cause the speaker to work harder than it should, and you will limit the sounds they can produce. Baffles are only around $10 and will pay for themselves many times over thoughout the lifetime of your system. Sonic is always easy to deal with and they don't hesitate to ship your items.
