The PreSonus HP4 Headphone Distribution Amplifier:

Are you tired of having to strain to hear your headphones through your weak interface? Well, thanks to Jim Odom, his team of engineers, and lots of jambalaya, PreSonus has designed the HP4 with 150 mW individual headphone amps. These amps are loud enough for live and session use, and they’re loud enough to explode the oysters in a Po’ Boy sandwich. Yet the sound is clear and clean, with a wide dynamic range. At last, everybody will be able to hear — assuming they are capable of hearing. Be careful with that level control!

As with other Max Rack products, simplicity is the hallmark of the HP4. You get left and right line inputs, left and right line outputs with level control, and the four headphone outs. You can globally mute the headphone outs, adjust the overall headphone level, and sum the stereo signals to mono.

Like other processors in our Max Rack series, the HP4 can sit on a tabletop or can be mounted in 1/3 rackspace, using the optional 3UMR rack adapter. If your needs expand, you can use the line outputs to feed the inputs of a second HP4 or an HP60. Chain as many headphone systems as you need!

Quit struggling with mediocre headphone amps. Get the HP4 and hear everything loud and clear. You owe it to your music.

Headphone Amplifier Specifications

Amplifier Style
Some headphone amplifiers are designed to be portable and others are meant to be placed on a desk. This will tell you what style of amplifier this item is.
Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC)
A Digital-to-Analog converter (also known as a DAC) converts a digital audio signal into an analog signal. This is especially helpful for listen to music from digital sources, such as iPods and smart phones.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies the amplifier will reproduce (lowest frequency to the highest). Bigger is better, meaning the wider the range, the better. The optimal range is 20 - 20,000 Hz (which is the range of human hearing).
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
Input Connection
This is the manner in which the headphone amplifiers receive an input audio signal.
Input Impedance
This is the input impedance of the headphone amplifier.
Output Connection
This is the manner in which the headphone amplifier will output the audio signal.
Number of Outputs
Some headphone amplifiers have a built-in splitter so multiple pairs of headphones can be connected to it. The number specified here is the number of headphones that can be connected to the amplifier.
Output Power
This is the output wattage of the headphone amplifier. It is measured in mW.
Output Impedance
This is the output impedance of the headphone amplifier.
Power Requirement
This is the required way to give the unit power. Common power sources are 120V AC (Common house plugs), batteries, or a combination of the two. If the headphone amplifier uses batteries, this will list the type of batteries that are required. Please refer to the description to find out how many are required for the unit to be properly powered.
Width
The width of the item from left to right (side-to-side) measured in inches.
5-1/2"
Height
The height of the item, measured from top to bottom, in inches.
1-3/4"
Depth
The front-to-rear depth of the item, in inches. If the item is angled or slanted, this value is the bottom measurement.
5-1/2"

DAC Specifications

Maximum Output Voltage
This is the maximum voltage that the amplifier or preamplifier is able to output.
Output Impedance
This is the amount of impedance that the microphone allows.
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)
The amount of change in harmonic content of the signal as it is amplified. A lower figure indicates less change and a more accurate amp. THD below 0.10% is inaudible.
Crosstalk
Crosstalk is defined as the unwanted transfer of signals across communication channels. The higher this number is, in dB, the better crosstalk rejection the DAC is capable of.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
This spec compares the strength of the signal to the level of background noise. A higher value indicates less background noise.
>95 dB
Digital Inputs
The type of digital inputs the digital-to-analog converter features.
Jitter
Jitter is a deviation in or displacement of the pulses in a high-frequency digital signal.
Line Level Outputs
The type of analog line level outputs the DAC features.
Sample Rate
Power Requirement
This is the required way to give the unit power. Common power sources are 120V AC (Common house plugs), batteries, or a combination of the two. If the headphone amplifier uses batteries, this will list the type of batteries that are required. Please refer to the description to find out how many are required for the unit to be properly powered.
